Hydraulic and motor fluids do not wear out–they just getdirty. Many contaminants exist in today’s hydraulic fluidand lubricating systems. Water infiltrates hydraulic systems continuously as

fluid is used and stored–and copper, iron, aluminum, and chromium par-ticles are commonly present in thefluids from wear of system compo-nents. Those elements combine todamage the hydraulic systems andnecessitate premature replacement

Denmar Pump Services, Inc. just cele-brated its anniversary and they are proudto have delivered a reliable service withthe integrity of their production nevercompromised in the past 10 years. WhenMark Trahan and Dennis Thomas started

this company in 2002, they shared the vi-sion of ensuring excellence in productionthrough attention to detail at each phaseby having the capabilities and knowledgein-house so that quality has become syn-onymous with their brand.

Prior to starting Denmar Pump Serv-ices, they both began their careers at In-gersoll-Rand till corporate decisions weremade to retract the pump repair divisionat the Walpole, Mass., location. Conse-quently, it left many of their customerswith equipment still needing to be serv-iced. Due to their customers’ needsThomas and Trahan opened their doors toPramco, which was driven by their pas-sion to continue to support and carry outthe quality services and products that wasexpected and deserved. When Pramcofirst started in 1992, they were mainlyservicing repair for small to medium duty

pumps. However, due to their experi-ence and reputation in the pump industry, which includes more than 40 years ofcombined experience with Ingersoll-Rand they were asked to join forces witha larger corporation to open and run theirpump repair division. Unfortunately, thiswas a short endeavor and after five yearswhen their contract ended corporate de-cided to close their pump division, allow-ing them to pick up where they left offand thus the origin of Denmar PumpServices had commenced.

Thomas and Trahan already had theprevious experience to know their visionwould remain the same as it was atPramco, but with that awareness theyalso knew what they wanted to do differ-ently. They had particular skill sets ac-quired from their experience atIngersoll-Rand and they wanted to utilizetheir pump expertise within the heavyiron industries. From the beginning itwas a priority for Denmar to have the ca-pabilities to handle the level of work re-quired within the power generation

industries and as they progress they striveto cater to their diverse needs.

In 2005, Trahan became the soleowner and as a result he only wanted tocontinue to meet his own high standardsof service without forfeiting the qualityof process Denmar stands behind. Theyrecognize that it is impossible to betterthemselves by remaining stagnant, which is why they are constantly look-ing at where improvements can be madeand how they can grow to better supporttheir customers. Specifically, this yearthey have already increased their sup-port, sales, machining and field capabil-ities. Their mission is to be the leadingprovider of design, repair and service,by offering consistent and reliable solu-tions in conjunction with high qualityproducts and extensive knowledge in theindustry. Everyday Denmar and its em-ployees strive to meet these goals anddeliver above and beyond any client’sexpectations.

Today we see more of a run-to-failure op-erating mode and reactionary approachesafter an event happens in a facility and theunit shuts down with associated loss ofproduction. Also, online testing systemsusers are looking for tools and systemsthat will allow for condition assessmentswhile the plant is running. As examples,Partial Discharge Testing, Corona Testing,Thermal infra-red testing and vibrationmonitoring all play into this with oil andgas analysis and acoustic methods.

Q: Are you introducing any new prod-ucts at the show?

A: Well, if someone cornered me, Iwould be willing to show them the newCircuit Breaker Analyzer. It is a remark-able game changer for the electrical serv-ice industry. If they come by our booth,I could be forced to take it out of mypocket and amaze them.

Q: Do you see any new trends in themarket.

A: Yes. Every year, we see less expertisein the plants and plant engineers get putinto positions without as much supportstaff as in the past. Right now, plants donot have in-place systems to track main-tenance and in-place capability to get thejob done. This creates a reliance on out-

supplies replacement vacuum interruptersto all types of users. Next you will see ourCircuit Breaker Analyzer product thatwill launch in February 2013. This mo-bile device based testing system willallow a plant maintenance worker to spottest his circuit breakers while doing nor-mal switching without an outside con-tractor.

Q: Who are the typical users for GroupCBS products?

A: Utilities and heavy power users of alltypes currently represent our customerbase. We have been in business for morethan 30 years and there is not an industryor large company in the United Statesthat we have not done work with. Ourproducts are widely accepted and used byevery generating utility in the U.S. and allthe fortune 500 manufacturers.

Q: What makes your business unique?

A: Simple, we have spent 33 years gath-ering the best people in our business. Ourpeople care and have a stake in the suc-cess of the whole project. Additionally,

A: Group CBS blends many different ca-pabilities and dedicated people to the en-gineering service and repair of mediumand low voltage power distributionequipment. WASHINGTON—API Executive VicePresident Marty Durbin told reportersthat American voters have shown strongsupport for building the Keystone XLpipeline and that the project represents anearly and major opportunity for PresidentObama to boost job creation and spureconomic growth:

“President Obama campaigned on jobcreation and on an all-of-the-above en-ergy strategy, including more oil andnatural gas. And our exit polls lastweek showed that’s where voters are aswell:• 73 percent support more Americanproduction of oil and natural gas• 91 percent believe that productionwill lead to more American jobs, and • 75 percent support building the Key-stone XL Pipeline

So as the president looks for opportu-nities to provide a quick boost to theeconomy and strengthen our energy se-curity, we again urge him to approvethe full Keystone XL Pipeline as soonas possible. “

“The government’s own projec-

tions show that oil and natural gas willcontinue to provide a majority of ourenergy for decades to come. So if wecan source more of that energy fromright here in North America while cre-ating jobs and generating governmentrevenue, approving the Keystone XLpipeline should be an easy decision.Given the project had the support of bi-partisan majorities in both the Houseand Senate, the president should givevoters what they asked for and approvethe project at the earliest possible op-portunity.”

API is a national trade associationthat represents all segments of Amer-ica’s technology-driven oil and naturalgas industry. Its more than 500 mem-bers – including large integrated com-panies, exploration and production, refining, marketing, pipeline, and ma-rine businesses, and service and supplyfirms – provide most of the nation’s en-ergy. The industry also supports 9.2million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of theU.S. economy, delivers $86 million aday in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested more than $2trillion in U.S. capital projects to ad-vance all forms of energy, including al-ternatives.

Holtec auxiliary heat exchangersare engineered to meet the unique de-mands of nuclear applications such ascyclic loadings (source of metal fatigue)and high flow rates (source of flow in-duced vibration). Holtec’s participationin development of robust heat transfertechnology is evidenced by the contri-butions to HEI and TEMA standards forheat exchangers, surface condensers, and feedwater heaters.

A key component in Holtec’s globalsuccess has been the ability to managethe manufacture of heat transfer equip-ment, engineered at the Corporate Tech-nology Center in Marlton, N.J., usingeither their own 550,000 square footmanufacturing facility located near Pitts-burgh or more geographically suitablemanufacturers worldwide; that meetHoltec’s quality and on-time performancerequirements, and with whom Holtec hasproceeded to develop the necessaryTeaming Agreements. Holtec possessesall requisite ASME certifications to per-form the scope of work requested by theirclients, namely U, R, N, N3, NPT stamps.Holtec also possesses the ISO 9001:2008certification for the design, manufacture, construction, and site service activitiesfor the design and manufacture of pres-sure vessels, heat transfer equipment, andother similar types of equipment and thesystems necessary to store and transportnuclear fuel and other materials.

Our decades of experience mitigatingfretting, FOD, corrosion pitting, corro-sion fatigue, and SCC ensure life exten-sion of critical metallic components, suchas turbine blades, bearing races and more.Typical applications lead to exponentiallyincreased fatigue life and over a 10Xdamage tolerance increase.

Q: How does your technology compareto other surface enhancement methods?

A: Our techniques differ from conven-tional surface treatments by giving un-precedented control of the stresses in apart. Our complete engineering solutiondetermines the exact level of compres-sion required to achieve optimum results

and exactly where to put it. Only high-stress or damage prone areas of a partneed to be treated. The process can miti-gate FOD in the leading edge of a blade, fretting in the dovetail or fir tree joint, and SCC in the low-pressure stages proneto corrosion, all with the same technique.

Application produces a depth of com-pression ranging from a few thousandthsof an inch to over a full centimeter. Forcomponents like turbine blade edges, special tools are used to provide through-thickness compression. Other tool de-signs are also available for tight radii andrestricted geometries, such as dovetails.

Unlike other surface enhancement meth-ods, our processes only induce the mini-mal amount of cold working needed tocreate the necessary level of protection to

improve damage tolerance and compo-nent performance. Low cold workingprovides both thermal and mechanicalstability of the beneficial compression.Traditional methods like shot peeningproduce only a shallow layer of protec-tion with a rough and highly cold workedsurface. We offer practical, cost-effec-tive, shop floor logistically compatibleprocesses that provide reliable perform-ance improvement without altering eitherthe material or design. Parts remain 100percent original pieces.

Processing can be performed as an over-haul service or a complete turnkey sys-tem can be installed in the productionplant or maintenance facility. Operatingone of our systems does not require ex-tensive training, and equipment can beused with existing CNC machines or ro-

LAMBDA(continued from page 1)

bots. Processing only takes a few minutes, and with robotic integration, it can evenbe performed in-situ. This is particularlybeneficial for unscheduled maintenance.Computer control also ensures absoluterepeatability. The closed loop processcontrol system exceeds Six Sigma qualitystandards and statistical process controldata is collected constantly.

Our techniques provide deeper, strongerand more stable protection for criticalparts.

of hydraulic fluid.Lubricating oil breaks down for a

number of reasons. Motor oil, for exam-ple, collects and suspends acids, water, fuel and air-borne contaminants.

Contamination control is the key topreventing most equipment failures. TheConserver purification system can signif-icantly reduce water and other volatiles–as well as particulates–in a fluid and, bymaintaining cleaner, dryer fluid, entirecycles of fluid replacement can be elimi-nated, equipment downtime can be sub-stantially reduced, and the equipment canoperate more frequently and efficiently. Those factors combine to provide re-

duced maintenance costs and manyadded years of life for the equipment.

The Conserver purification systemremoves and neutralizes those contami-nants, including free water and emul-sion–the most significant contaminantthat exists in systems today. Water re-duces the life of the fluids–damages bear-ings–causes corrosion, oxidation, andadditive depletion–reduces viscosity, andmore. By reducing water in the fluid, theConserver purification system extendsthe fluid drainage period up to 10 timesand increases the life of system compo-nents by as much as 75 percent.

The Conserver purification systemoperates through a highly advanced twostage system to continuously keep oil andhydraulic fluid clean and extend the life

cycle of such fluids. The first stage is a specially designed

micro glass media having a BETA=3000with 99.97 percent efficiency for particlesizes of 3 microns or more. This partic-ular cut-off point for particle removal waschosen so as to remove damaging parti-cles, while not having an adverse effecton the important components of the fluid, including additives.

The second stage is the Conserverpurification system’s patented moistureremoval chamber. The fluid passesthrough the evaporation chamber wherewater and other volatiles are separatedand removed from the fluid.

The Conserver purification systemalso reduces the dumping of used petro-leum and related fluids, which are a major

HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS(continued from page 1)

contributor to the destruction of ourecosystem. Statistics show that almost halfof used oil ends up in landfills, sewers ordirectly in the environment. It has furtherbeen reported that oil concentrations assmall as 1 ppm can contaminate drinkingwater supplies for 50 families for up to oneyear and the harmful effects on mammalsand birds include toxic contamination, de-struction of central nervous systems anddestruction of the food supply.

By reducing wasteful disposal anddumping of our limited natural resources, the Conserver purification system reducesthe dangers to our environment and in-creases the useful life of fluids and theequipment that uses those fluids.

(pellets, nuggets, block and leftoverscrap), offers the ability to shave ice ordirect feed pellets for unlimited control, accommodates all Cold Jet standard Aeroaccessories and delivers proven cleaningeffectiveness on the full spectrum of con-tract cleaning applications.

“We used the SDI Select 60 toclean a hydroelectric generator built in1920 that had never been rewound,”said Randell Heath, Owner ofColdsweep, Inc. “The unit was in verypoor shape and the main concern wasto provide a gentle cleaning action thatwould not damage the windings thatwere in poor condition to start with. Itperformed wonderfully to clean the del-icate windings at pressures that variedbetween 30 and 50 psi. We also usedthe SDI Select 60 to clean the cast ironportions of the generator housing athigher pressures up to 125 psi.”

The SDI Select 60 offers the value ofdelicate cleaning and high-level aggres-

sion all in one frame. With the ability toshave with any dry ice media – from stan-dard block, 3 millimeter pellets, nuggets, slices and even leftover scrap ice; or di-rect feed standard pellets – the SDI Select60 offers unrivaled cleaning performanceand eliminates worries about dry iceavailability.

“Professional contract cleanersknow the importance of being able to dialin to the exact clean needed for the vari-ability with each new application or job,”said Darren George, Director of BusinessDevelopment at Cold Jet. “With ColdJet’s new SDI Select 60, contractors havethe ability to dust the finest smoke-dam-aged surfaces and clean high-end hydrogenerators with the delicacy of shaveddry ice, or ramp up the aggression byusing full 3 millimeter pellets when facedwith tougher applications. For the firsttime, contractors can navigate a full spec-trum of dry ice cleaning solutions withone unit. And, they no longer have toworry about whether they can find the ap-propriate type of dry ice as all formswork effectively.”

Showcasing Cold Jet’s patentedshaved ice technology, the SDI Select 60can clean large surfaces of thin, hard con-taminants, without damaging the substrate. And when faced with heavier contami-nants, the operator can simply bypass theshaving media, turn up the aggression andclean using full 3 millimeter pellets.

“We shaved both block ice and ricepellets with ease and experienced no is-sues,” said Heath. “The possibility ofperforming three different types of dryice cleaning with one machine is verycompelling for us. Generator cleaningprojects require some very delicate clean-ing for some areas, but other areas cantolerate more aggressive cleaning. TheSDI Select 60 provides the full spectrumof cleaning capability in one easy to usepackage. The ability to use all of the Aerostyle nozzles while performing dry icedusting activities is also a plus. Onceagain, Cold Jet seems to be making theimpossible a little easier to achieve.”

The SDI Select 60 is 24 inches x 28inches x 43 inches in size, weighs 343pounds, operates from 20 psi to 250 psi
