ForewordPeter White Chairman of the Board of Governors

2006/2007 was a successful year for Enfield College. The College fulfilled its mission of ‘helping people build success into their lives’ by working effectively with our wide range of stakeholders to ensure the success of our students.

The College achieved a number of nationally recognised quality kite marks including Matrix accreditation and full Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status for its Early Years provision.

During the year, the Board of Governors undertook a strategic options review which will ensure that Enfield College continues to serve the people and community of Enfield.

I should like to thank the members of the Board of Governors and all the staff for their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work, which have contributed to the College’s success within our local and regional community.

This Annual Review provides examples of the many activities and successful achievements of 2006/2007.

Enfield College was established as a corporate college in April 1993 by an Act of Parliament. It is governed by a Board of Governors whose members during 2006/2007 were:

IntroductionJean CarterPrincipal and Chief Executive

During 2006/2007 Enfield College demonstrated that it is at the heart of the local community of Enfield. The College increased its student numbers and ensured the success of students by working in collaboration with a wide range of partners. The College worked with other

educational organisations including the College of North East London on a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) for Early Years education and a consortium for Train to Gain, and with Southgate and Capel Manor Colleges in the Edmonton Green College Centre.

Partnerships with schools extended opportunities for pupils to ‘Try a Job’ and participate in vocational training. By achieving bids for regeneration the College was able to work with the London Borough of Enfield to support local employers and voluntary and community groups. Enfield College worked with partners as wide ranging as Middlesex Football Association, Chicken Shed Theatre Company and the National Health Service to deliver the College’s mission of ‘helping people build success into their lives’.

The Board of Governors is committed to ‘helping people build success into their lives’. To achieve this the Board recognises that equality of opportunity must be promoted in all areas of College life and the diversity of all staff and students respected within a welcoming and supportive environment. This includes eliminating unfair discrimination and promoting a positive attitude with respect to age, cultural background, disability, ethnicity, gender, language levels, learning difficulty, marital status, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation and social background. The Board recognises that the success of Enfield College as an organisation must be assessed against benchmarks for equality and diversity derived from best practice within further education and elsewhere.

College profileIn 2006/2007 aggregate (all ages) success and achievement rates on all long courses (more than 24 weeks duration) improved over 2005/2006 rates.

In 2006/2007 Enfield College recruited more than 6,500 students, 26% of which were full-time students (defined as 450+ guided learning hours studied in 2006/2007). The student population reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity of north London, with a significant proportion of students coming from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds (43%); this includes a considerable number of students from Turkish and Cypriot ethnic backgrounds, as well as from African heritage.

Review of the YearDirectorate of Vocational and Professional Studies Jeff Rosenberg, Director of Curriculum

The Directorate of Vocational and Professional Studies was established in the academic year 2006/2007 and comprised the Divisions of: Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Business Administration and Information Technology, Creative Industries, Business and Professional Studies, Sport, Travel and Tourism, Early Years and Social Care, and Enterprise Services.

Retention of students, their achievements and overall success rates have improved on a year by year basis. 2006/2007 was no exception.

Exceptional success rates in Sport, Travel and Tourism up to 35% above national averages.

Very high achievements in Early Years, Health and Social Care, building on the success of the College’s Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Early Years.

100% achievement of students on the BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design and A2 Media Studies.

Success rates in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy up to 13% above national averages.

Significant progression of students from Entry Level up to Level 3 across all Divisions.

The work of the Directorate has a strong focus with employers and local community groups. It works closely with these groups helping Lone Parents back into work, and also with the Ponders End Community Trust to enhance skills and job opportunities for people within the local area. The Directorate is responsible for the successful delivery of football coaching qualifications to over 900 learners in Middlesex. The Enterprise Services Division is involved with over 250 organisations supporting them in self assessing their work and so improving their businesses.

Tracie Hanberger passed her CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education course in June 2007 with Distinction grades. She is now working full-time at a local nursery.

Anissa Larouci passed her BTEC National Diploma in Media (Moving Image) course in June 2007, achieving a fantastic triple Merit grade. She has gone on to further her studies at Thames Valley University.

Deniz Cam successfully completed his Introductory Diploma in Travel and Tourism course in June 2007. He has now progressed

Tourism at the College.

Louise Georgiou completed her NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing course in June 2007 and she is now working part-time for a local hair salon.

Review of the YearDirectorate of Foundation and Progression Studies Bernadette McAnespie, Director of Curriculum

The Directorate of Foundation and Progression Studies was established in the academic year 2006/2007 and comprised the Divisions of: ESOL, Basic Skills, SLDD, Science, Maths, English and Humanities, and Lifelong Learning.

It was a busy and successful year :

ESOL success rates improved by 14 percentage points.

Teacher training success rates were between 8 and 27 percentage points above the national average.

A2 Level pass rates in Media, Chemistry, Law, English, Business and Maths subjects were all between 90-100%.

Results on all Vocational Science programmes were between 9 and 43 percentage points above national averages.

94% of students on designated courses for people with learning difficulties achieved an externally accredited qualification.

Over 100 students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities were successfully supported on mainstream courses.

The Directorate has also been part of a successful London Development Agency bid to develop educational opportunities in conjunction with the Bangladeshi Women’s Centre. The Naree Konto Project (Womens’ Voices) was launched in August and almost 40 women are enrolled on courses being run at a local community centre.

Michael Milan completed his A Level programme in June 2007, achieving two B grades for Physics and Chemistry, and an A grade in Mathematics. He has gone on to study Physics at Royal Holloway University.

Erhan Oksuz successfully completed his Entry Level 2 ESOL course in June 2007. He has now progressed on to an Information Technology course at the College.

Seher Tanak successfully completed her START course in June 2007, and has now progressed on to an Early Years/Care course at the College.

Enfield College at the Heart of the CommunitySome of the many activities that took place during 2006/2007 and successful achievements of that year include:

Joan Ryan, Labour MP for Enfield North, paid a visit to some Business Studies students. She wanted to gain an insight into political issues that were important to them.

The College was awarded the prestigious Matrix Quality Standard kite mark, in recognition of the high quality service provided to its customers and clients by the Admissions and Information Service.

For the second year running the College hosted a ‘Try-a-Job’ convention run in conjunction with the Enfield Education Business Partnership. The event offered students from mainstream and special secondary schools all over Enfield, the opportunity to participate in hands-on practical workshops that would provide them with a taster of different occupations.

for the Education Building Architect of the Year category, which they won.

van Heyningen and Haward, the architects that were responsible for designing Enfield College’s state of the art teaching facility Kingfisher House, won an award at the Architect of the Year Awards.
