The thrust roup, which consists of two hdraulic rams, is used

to drive the penetration cone and rod strin into the soil. The

measurin device indicates the resistance to penetration offered

b the soil. The data obtained in such testin lends itself to the

rapid and reliable determination of the eometrical characteristics

of the soil.

Soft soils with fine and medium rains are well suited to static

penetration testin, while deposits of ravel and cemented rocs

often represent an impassable barrier to static testin.

In the static form, no preliminar operation to anchor the

The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) consists of drivin a specialsampler for 1.5 feet at the bottom of a soundin hole. The

penetration ener is supplied b a 140 lb hammer that drops in
