BECOME the Research: Persuasive Presentation Again, based on the research you’ve done for the one job in your Report, it is your job to take on the identity
of the character in the novel that inspired you to research the job he/she has.
Make the experience of the job come alive during the presentation for your classmates.
Take on the job;
come in dressed up (to the best of your ability – effort is worth a lot here, even if you’re not fully successful) and teach your classmates about what “you” do for a living.
Bring in props
Prove that this is / is not an interesting / worthwhile job.
Gather a variety of media (visuals, clips, images, handouts, overheads, etc. - IN ADDITION TO YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT) to illustrate your ideas and add interest to your presentation.
Prepare meaningful activities for the class to aid them in understanding “your” job more deeply. Audience involvement – ranging from your introduction to conclusion – is key. A bored audience indicates an uninteresting, and, therefore, unsuccessful presentation. Do not talk AT the audience; involve them IN “your” job. Also, please do not repeat methods used by other students to get classmates involved. Be original.
Your presentation will be 15-20 minutes long.
Content that MUST be present: Have an introduction Focus the presentation’s purpose
Teach your classmates Activities
Images
60-Second Video
Handouts
Props (STAY
within school
code – no guns,
no drug
paraphernalia,
etc.)
What do “you” do for a living? Include ALL aspects of the job
Include activities to make the experience of the job come alive
How does your job play out in the book?
What do “you” do in the book to help things move forward because of your job?
How does “your” job affect (help / hinder) others?
Are “you” a good fit for your job? Why? Why not?
What is hard about “your” job?
Demonstrate the difficulties of the job through activities
What are some interesting facts or statistics about “your” job?
Present the Promotional Poster and DEFEND its effectiveness
Pitch it to your classmates; try to recruit them into the job
Why this is / is not a worthwhile job from “your” perspective
Conclude Wrap up all of your information with a meaningful closing statement
/10 PROMOTE the Research: Persuasive Recruitment Poster (or anti-Recruitment Poster)
You will create a poster that attempts to persuade you audience to EITHER join OR not join the profession you have researched and presented on.
Content that MUST be present: Convey a Specific Message
START with your message and build from there. Text and visuals should clearly convey the intended message.
Effective Advertising Techniques
Colour, Layout, Images, Use of Space Consider techniques you learned through the advertising unit.
Consider Your Audience
You are trying to convince your classmates. What would persuade them?
YOUR POSTER MUST CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE THOUGHTFULNESS and CARE; this is NOT a last-minute task. It is worth HALF of your presentation grade.

DO the Research: Annotated Bibliography Choose one JOB present in your mystery novel and conduct research for it.
You will find 4 print sources, ONE of which may be a video or interview.
For each source, you will create a bibliographic entry
For each source, you will engage in a brief discussion of how the source will be useful to your discussion of the job you’re researching (ie. how will you use it in your Report and Presentation?)
For each source, you will provide a series of quotations that you feel could aid you in your report (see below)
Create notes for ALL of your sources, but pick your strongest source for the Annotated Bibliography. You MAY NOT begin your Research Report until the Annotated Bibliography is done and returned to you.

Novel Title and Confidential Informant Annotated Bibliography
Lieberman, Brian. “Ethical Issues in the Use of Confidential Informants for Narcotics
Operations.” The Police Chief Magazine Volume 74, no.6 (2007). Web. 21 October 2013.
Quotation Explanation of Usefulness, Connect to novel…
“In working informants, officers need to
role play and express interest and concern to
gain the informants’ confidence; however,
in the process investigators can easily
develop a personal interest in informants
and cross the line between a professional
relationship and one of a personal nature.”
- This quotation connects to the novel, as the
confidential informant does develop a
personal relationship with the main cop in
the novel.
- This quotation will be useful under the
“Ethical Issues” section of the Report, as
closeness to the police may let emotions
enter the picture and thus compromise the
CI’s safety.

USE the Research: Formal Research Report Now that you’ve selected the one job you find most interesting in your mystery novel, and you’ve done the research, it’s
time to put the research to use through a Formal Research Report. Your Report must include specific headings and subheadings, and must follow a specific design layout (see below).
The Report will be 8-10 pages in length, but don’t fret! The Report’s layout considerations mean that it looks longer than it really is.
You will complete a section in the Report that will ask you to discuss the mystery novel in addition to the research.
At the end of the Report, it is your job to ultimately conclude whether or not the job has / has not been fairly conveyed in the novel based on your research.
You must show evidence of EACH of the following stages in order not to be flagged for possible plagiarism: REPORT OUTLINE REPORT ROUGH EDITING
Style Requirements: Use bullets Use complete sentences Use a larger font (13, max 14) Use charts Use bolded headings Use slightly-less bolded subheading USE PAGE NUMBERS Use diagrams

1 Introduction Intentions of Report Basic Background Information
2 Continue as outlined below…..
Introduction Explains the intention of the report – start with “This report intends to…”
Provide some basic background information
Organized Research (select all options that apply)
Job Description
Duties of the Job
Challenges of the Job (perhaps with a testimonial of someone who has the job)
History of the job
Why did it come about?
When did it come about?
How has it changed since it first became a “job”? (perhaps even on a timeline!)
Ethical issues surrounding this job (ie. how is it controversial? How have people in this job acted poorly?)
Education AND helpful experiences required for the job
Personality required for the job (why does personality become a factor?)
Pay and competition in this specific job field
Make Connections to the Novel
Do this chart:
Specific Item from Research Connection to Novel (describe AND include page #s)
Discuss how the novel accurately / inaccurately depicts the research
In a short paragraph WITH reasons, argue whether or not (you must take a side) the research accurately
portrays the job.
Glossary Specific terms unique to the job that the reader of the Report may not be familiar with. Define them as you
understand them (if you use a dictionary, CITE the source)
Works Cited Page Include a properly-formatted, alphabetical (by first word in the entry) Works Cited page.
H = history
D = duties
E = education / experience
C = challenges
B = basic information
This is just an example for a Report on
Confidential Informants. Put your novel title in
italics
This is a SAMPLE of ONE entry. A good source will have MANY
important quotations and many areas of application.
Don’t pick EVERY sentence, however; as a guide, 5-10 will
suffice.
