Introduction The Computer Training Program (CTP) at the National Judicial Institute provides training to judges in both the JUDICOM system and the use of common computer applications, to help improve the efficiency of the Canadian judiciary. The objective of the program is to:

• Develop judges’ awareness, abilities, and confidence in computing in the context of performing their judicial duties.

• Provide training sufficient to meet their present and anticipated needs. The program is tailored to the particular needs of judges as follows:

• Course selection has been approved by the Computer Education Faculty, an advisory group of judges who serve as a point of contact for CTP for matters related to judicial computer training.

• For each judge interested in receiving training, a personalized training plan is developed taking into account the judge’s goals, computing environment, experience level, and schedule.

• Courses can be presented in a series of brief (typically 1 hour) sessions to suit the judge’s availability and learning preferences.

• These sessions can be conducted over a prolonged period, e.g. weekly over a period of months, with progress being tracked by CTP to ensure continuity.

In the course descriptions that follow, please note that:

1. The “estimated time to complete” presents the typical range of instruction hours required to cover the course material. This is a guideline only and will vary according to a judge’s aptitude as well as the duration and frequency of the actual training sessions.

2. The “Core Topics” are representative only – actual course content can be tailored to include or exclude certain topics according to each individual’s needs.

3. Security related issues will be addressed in each course where relevant. In addition, a standalone computer security course is under development.

For further information or to arrange training, please contact Natalie Yelle, Computer Training Program Coordinator,

at 613-237-1118, ext. 285 or [email protected].

* Have you considered using JUDICOM? While most judges use shared work drives, Internet, and provincial email in their daily work, JUDICOM provides better or at least equal security in most cases to provincial networks by:

• restricting administrative access from provincial staff; • having JUDICOM messages reside on the JUDICOM server and not on your

computer; and, • completely erasing deleted messages each night (no tape backups as occurs on

some provincial systems). JUDICOM can be accessed from your home computer and can be programmed into any new computer relatively easily. For more information on the benefits of using JUDICOM, please ask your computer trainer.
