Fear Factor: Success and Risk in Extreme Sports

1 Thousands of people around the world love to do extreme sports. These sports include rock climbing, bungee jumping, skydiving, and scuba diving. Every year, at least a few of these people are injured, some seriously. However, this does not stop people from participating in these sports. For most of us, the thought of hanging from a mountain or jumping out of a plane is terrifying. However, a lot of people love doing these sports. What is it that drives some people to embrace these extreme sports despite the risks involved?

2 American Harper Jones, a longtime coach and sports-psychology coordinator for the Canadian Skydiving Association, says that not everyone has the mental character to excel in dangerous pursuits. He notes that most of us reach a point that limits our appetite for extreme risk and, as a result, our ability to perform well in dangerous conditions. But others have a much higher tolerance for risk. Take the example of Michael Staple, a top Australian skydiver. “The high element of risk makes you feel alive, tests what you are made of and how far you can take yourself,” Staple said in a previous interview with Australian Skydiving Team staff. “I’m not looking for danger. I’m in it for the challenge, my heart thumping as I fall, the feeling of being alive,” he said.

3 The fear that drives many people away from the risks of extreme sports may be the same ingredient that keeps others coming back for more. Rock climber Mark Palmer has logged many notable climbs over the course of his climbing career. After more than 30 years climbing mountains, Palmer does not want to stop climbing, even after his bad experience which has prevented him from pushing to the extremes like he once did. For Palmer, the feeling of going to these extremes is still vivid. “I can remember getting into situations where I thought that at any moment I could be killed,” he told National Geographic News. “The thought that I could fall again at any moment is so exciting!” he recalled. “When you finish your climb you quickly forget how scary it was, and you go back again.”

4 In addition to not being afraid of risks, certain people may perceive risk differently from others. Stephen O’Connor, a sports psychologist and professor at Northwest State University, has worked with Olympians and other athletes. He says he is struck by the way they redefine risk according to their skills, experience, and environment. O’Connor thinks the perspective of extreme athletes is very different of our own. “We look at a risky situation and know that if we were in that situation, we would be out of control,” he said. “But from the athletes’ perspective, they have a lot of control, and there are a lot of things that they do to minimize risk.”

5 Other athletes say that they don’t perceive danger when they are in “the zone.” This is a state in which many athletes describe becoming absorbed in pursuits that focus the mind completely on the present. Psychologists note that some people seem to have a strong craving for adrenaline rushes as a thrill-seeking behavior or personality trait. As a result, these types of people may always be driven to adventures that others consider extreme. “I love the adrenaline rush,” says German skier Jurgen Strauss. “That’s the reason I do this sport! I think sport would be boring without the adrenaline rush.”

Ideas for Greener Cities

1 Governments around the world are under pressure to make cities more energy efficient. Many local governments have started to put up solar panels on rooftops and added wind turbines to the waterfront. Both of these practices generate energy from “free” sources. These are not new ideas, but they’re becoming more and more common. They are now expected in any plans to make cities greener or less dependent on energy from coal or oil.

2 There are also many new ideas to make cities more energy efficient. Some of these ideas may seem a bit strange at first. For example, some cities are looking at the idea of growing their fruit and vegetables in the city; on rooftops, in backyards, on vacant lots. Across the world, small urban farms are “sprouting” up to help make the cities green and to feed urban dwellers. There is even talk of bringing farming inside. Indoor farming does not take as much space as a traditional farm, and also uses less water.

3 Another idea to make cities greener is to tear down buildings and roads. This is happening in many cities around the world from Paris to Toronto to San Francisco and New York. In France, one of the first things that Nicolas Sarkozy did as president was to have a meeting with the best architects in France in order to think of ways they could make Paris greener. These top architects, including Richard Rogers, Jean Nouvel, Djamel Klouche, and Roland Castro suggested tearing down buildings which have become such an eyesore in the city, and replacing them with huge parks and gardens.

4 London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, had another idea to solve problems of pollution in London. He started a bicycling scheme that made it possible for people to rent bikes in London for a cheap price. At over 400 stations in London, you can rent one of 5,000 bicycles for up to twenty-four hours. You can return the bike to any station. The bike stations are close to other transportation stations, like buses and the underground. Since the program started, the number of stations has increased, and so has the number of subscribers. The best part of the scheme is that the city’s carbon dioxide emissions decreased by more than 850 tons in the first nine months of the program.

5 Cities all over the world have to think of ways to become more energy efficient. Maybe it’s time to think “out of the box” for really innovative ways to solve this worldwide problem. It will involve changing the way we think of things, but in the end our quality of life will be improved.
