Snowflake

It was a Sunday afternoon. I was on my way to the airport to drop off my little sister. It was her very first time flying all by herself, and she

had been gripping my hand tightly the whole car ride. Her other hand was clutching her pink bunny rabbit, Snowflake. When we arrived at the airport, she hugged me tightly. We helped her check her bags and went with her to the gate. “Goodbye!” we cried, as her plane took to the skies.

Missing her already, I put my hand in my sweatshirt pocket and pulled out Snowflake. I gasped. Panicked, I quickly alerted the rest of my family. It was her first time flying by herself! What would she do without the pink rabbit that she took everywhere? She had first gotten Snowflake when she was very young. In all my memories of her, I never picture her without it. We had spent the whole day at an amusement park, and we were wearily heading back to our car when she spotted it. A small pink bunny, dangling from the hand of the ring toss operator. She spent nearly 15 dollars in her effort, but in the end, she won the bunny. Ever since then, she and Snowflake have been inseparable.

When she got back from her trip, everyone had prepared words of sympathy to console her. Imagine our surprise when she announced that she had meant to leave it! After hearing her story of slipping Snowflake into my pocket while we hugged, I swelled with pride.

“You shouldn’t be so surprised,” she said. She reminded me, “After all, I’m a big 7-year-old now.”

Identify SUBJECT, VERB, and OBJECT in this essay.

Shark Attack!

The ocean was calm as glass. Surfers bobbled on the surface of the water like rubber duckies. Waiting for the next wave, I was bored out of my mind.  Little did I know that I would soon experience the most

terrifying episode in my life.

Impatient, I paddled out to the open water, further and further away from the other surfers. I neglected their warning calls of “Dude, you are going too far out!” I tenaciously wanted to catch the next big wave before everyone else.Soon, the other surfers were black dots on the ocean. The families on the beach became indistinguishable specs. I looked towards the horizon and could read the names of the cargo ships at sea.  I also noticed that a gray dorsal fin was rapidly headed my way.

Laying face down on my surfboard, I paddled as fast as I could towards the shore. My arms became twin steamship wheels that propelled me towards the white beach. I could now make out the bodies of the other surfers in the distance, their faces painted with trepidation.

A bite! The sea predator took a chomp at my surfboard and left me a jagged memento. Thinking that my feet would be the casualty of his next assault, I did something that I later realized was foolhardy: I stood up on my surfboard. I soon realized the imprudence of my decision and expected to topple like a Jenga tower right into the shark’s welcoming jaws.

However, I found myself erect as a redwood tree. Both my feet were planted on the board as I felt myself ascending. I looked around me and did not find any sign of my attacker. Instead, I was on the crest of a mountain of water, looking down at the other surfers, their mouths agape.

Instantly, terror turned into ecstasy. I was riding a skyscraper of a wave, the shark attack a distant memory.  This series of unexpected events turned out to be auspicious after all. It was a pleasant surprise.
