Recognition: Priceless!

Engagement Leader of the Year Award Do you know an engaging leader at USPS? We are looking for leaders who are involved

in, enthusiastic about, and committed to creating a more engaging culture in their work environment.

Nominees must be an EAS or PCES employee in a leadership position with direct reports within any Postal Service function.

Deadline to submit nominations: Aug. 1, 2016

To submit a nomination or for additional information, please visit the Employee Engagement Blue page.

One can never have too many good ideas for how to recognize a fellow employee. Here are a few simple ways to make someone feel appreciated at work. The best part is, they don’t cost a thing!

Write personalized, handwritten notes telling your co-workers you appreciate them or compliment their work. Leave a note where it will be found by the recipient, or mail it to his or her home address!

Keep a positive observations team journal where team members can make a note of the good things their co-workers have done. Schedule a weekly get-together where you can read the entries out loud.

Schedule regular, informal team huddles where there is no agenda but to talk about what’s on people’s minds. Informal group conversations can help the team get to know each other better and find out what is important to one another, increasing the opportunities for meaningful recognition.

Got a no cost/low cost recognition idea to share with us? Write to us!

Next Week’s Engagement Challenge:

Let’s get plugged in to an engaged work environment. Engagement for most employees is simply being HAPPY in their work units. Please give us your thoughts around what creates happiness in your work unit.

A little thanks goes a long way! Here’s what some employees have to say about their co-workers.

Ready, Set, Recognize!

“I would like to recognize Terri Stadin, sales associate at the Willow River, MN, Post Office. Willow River was severely flooded during storms on July 14, and Terri kept her cool. She worked so hard every day and helped as many people as she could. She gave everyone updates on road closures, and on a nearby dam that was being monitored by the Army Corps of Engineers. Even when she was at her wit’s end personally, she still kept her cool with everyone and kept a smile on her face.”

Michelle Ziegler, sales associate, Finlayson, MN

“Richard Hay is a 27-year

letter carrier, who has always been a very engaged employee. Rich has held several carrier positions in his career. He is very conscience of his customers and knows most of them by name. Rich is always willing to assist on other routes and is willing to teach and mentor new carriers. Rich is a very valuable asset to Springfield’s Southwest Station.”

Robin Burtle, station manager, Springfield, IL

“Shelly Fisher worked for the Postal Service for approximately 12 years. When she first started, she didn't have the time for her family that she wanted, as she and her husband were raising two daughters. She eventually quit to have more time at home. Once the daughters were older and in school, she ventured back into the postal system. I have known Shelly for the past 9 years; we work together in the clerk craft at the Neenah, WI, Post Office. Shelly is one of the hardest working, most dedicated people that any office of any type could want. She is always the first to sign up for overtime, the first person to stay if needed, and continues to take on

responsibilities . Our team at the Neenah Office has gone through many changes in the past few years, especially as of

late. She always looks out for others and does her best to keep things in order, regardless how stressful things can be at times. It's a pleasure to work with Shelly on a daily basis. A big shout out to you, Shelly!”

Corey Peterson, mail processing clerk, Neenah, WI

“I would like to recognize Bob Shomidie for giving our customers a positive experience. Bob began working for USPS in 1984, and is a sales and service associate at the downtown station in Springfield, IL. Bob comes to work every day with a smile and a kind word for everyone. He cares about our customers and it shows. Thank you Bob!”

Sue Litterly, customer relations coordinator, Springfield, IL

“Laura Klein is assigned as the distribution/administrative clerk for the Hazelwood/Bridgeton, MO, Carrier Annex. She has been with USPS for nearly 30 years and is the go to person in our office. She is not only a champion for USPS when it comes to dealing with our customers, but is a key player in our daily operations, and adept with dealing with the myriad of HRSSC forms required in hiring new personnel. She is a key player on our Program Evaluation Guide safety team and works tirelessly to ensure we stay on top of all safety and health concerns for our employees. Laura is a shining star in our office and for USPS!”

Cheryl Benford, Postmaster, Hazelwood, MO

“Mrs. Ruthie Elijah-Ford is an amazing administrative assistant. She has been with the Postal Service for 31 years. On a daily basis, Ruthie makes sure that management is aware of scheduled appointments, professionally answers the phone, takes messages, sets calendar invites, receives calendar invites and schedules appointments and email correspondences. She also manages the incoming mail, and maintains a filing system for all reports and forms. She has drive, a positive attitude and a pleasing personality every day. She works well with others, is always willing to assist in other areas, and is very good at working independently. She has excellent knowledge of secretarial responsibilities and is a very safety conscious employee.”

Nancy Theobald, manager, post office operations,

St. Louis, MO

“I would like to give a thank you to a very special, outstanding and hardworking employee: Robin Epton-Anlauf. Robin has been a general expeditor at the Oklahoma City P&DC for 10 years. She has taken on many roles: she is one of the lead expeditors and willingly does all training of new expeditors. Robin is one of the most understanding employees and is well-liked by all who cross her path, from workers to truck drivers and others. She has seen

many changes being an expeditor and has taken all challenges with a smile. She enjoys her role at the main facility interacting with the drivers to get the job done with consistency on a daily basis. Robin says, ‘I love what I do. I try to do my best every day and exceed our goals as best as I can for my facility.’ Robin, we take this opportunity to recognize you for all you do and the quality service you provide for the United States Postal Service. Thank you for being you.”

Vickie Thompson, supervisor, distribution operations,

Oklahoma City P&DC

“The Chicago District’s employee engagement team threw a sock hop in the administrative building June 24, bringing employees together for dancing, and networking with senior managers. The team also asked employees about the Postal Pulse survey and their suggestions for improving engagement. The results will be shared with attendees and senior leadership.”

“I have been working for the Postal Service since October of 2015. Coming from a completely different career, it was a big change. Sales associate, Carrie Garza, was so helpful to me in learning my job. She goes above and beyond. When she sees someone coming in the door, if they have a package, she has it ready for them before they get to the counter. At times she has had to box all the mail and scan and put away packages all by herself and never complains. If I have a question about anything, she always is willing to help me or anyone in our office. She has a very easy going attitude, is very flexible and willing to work at other offices with sometimes very little notice. She not only works in Renville, MN, but also Sacred Heart, Danube and Olivia. She has even taken her own time to drop things off for customers who she knows are on her way home, because she knows the customers won’t make it to the Post Office before we close. It is her hard work and dedication and willingness to help others and her knowledge of her job that make her an OUTSTANDING and AMAZING employee. She absolutely deserves to be recognized for this!”

Kristin Norris, sales associate, Renville, MN

“We would like to recognize Dennis Robison (above), tour 1 custodian at the Knoxville P&DC for his work ethic and dedication at the plant. Dennis is a dedicated employee who goes above and beyond every day, whether it be a special project or anything that needs to be done.”

Tonya Fraker, supervisor maintenance operations,

Knoxville, TN

Jackie Tautalo is an outstanding employee. Jackie is a self-starter and contributes tremendously to the STC team. We are happy to have her here at the LANDC and are truly delighted to have such an amazing employee.

Rachel Ross, A/supervisor, distribution operations

Bell, CA

“Daily the Somerville, AL, rural carriers go out of their way to help customers and community, but on a very hot, humid day Shelley Kirby completed her route and returned to the office with a heavy heart. Towards the end of her route she saw three boys sharing one bicycle headed into town. The boys live over three miles from town and were out in the hottest part of the day, walking on a busy, asphalt road. Shelley noticed all three were sweating profusely and had no water. Two of the boys were assisting the third, who has cerebral palsy. Shelley had stopped to ask the boys if they needed help and they replied they were on their way to the Somerville Town Library. Shelley took a few moments of her day to bring all three boys large, cold Gatorades and a snack to the library so they could rehydrate before their return home. Thank you, Shelley, for your kind heart for the community. Because of acts of kindness Somerville sees our postal employees as leaders in the community.”

Carol Brown, sales associate, Somerville, AL

“We would like to recognize Robert Coffman (left), Tour 2 custodian at the Knoxville P&DC, for his work ethic and dedication here at the plant. Robert is friendly, work oriented and dedicated. Robert consistently greets every employee, every day with a smile and good morning.”

Tonya Fraker, supervisor maintenance operations, Knoxville P&DC.

“Jeffery Ross, a BMEU clerk in Montgomery, AL is a dedicated, dependable,

hard-working, polite, knowledgeable, and customer service oriented

employee. He has presented permit mail with questionable content to

supervisors for inspection that was not entered through a BMEU, but found

in mail processing and entered through a collection box. He is dedicated to

protecting the revenue of the US Postal Service.”

“There is no way to describe the leadership and professionalism John Logan possess. John started out as a city carrier at the Granite City, IL, Post Office in 2007. He quickly was able to conquer whatever task was thrown his way. John has since become a 204B and has been able to master his skills at the town and country, St Charles, IL, destination delivery unit. Now he has made

a full circle and is back at the Granite City office. Any task that you give John you can expect will be done correctly on time, the first time.”

Susan Litterly, customer relations coordinator, Springfield, IL

“The Mattoon, IL, Post Office employees do an outstanding job, not just today, but all year long. Management appreciates their hard work all year long and wanted to show our appreciation by hosting a cookout for them. The griller is Adam Copsy (right), customer service supervisor.”

Kyle Browning, Postmaster, Mattoon, IL

“I would like to recognize Michael Burge for his outstanding work as a city letter carrier. Mike’s route has 653 residential and 45 business stops. His customers love him and look forward to seeing him daily. Mike does an excellent job and always brings a positive attitude to work. He keeps morale up in our unit because of his positive attitude and is just a great guy!”
