Independent examination is one of the two forms of external scrutiny that may be car-ried out under the statutory provisions in Scotland. Broadly speaking, an independent examination involves reviewing the accounting records and the annual accounts of the charity and considering whether the annual accounts are a fair reflection of the underlying records. When carried out properly, an independent examination provides a degree of comfort that the figures in the accounts, including the Trustees’ Annual Report, present an ac-curate picture of the financial activity of the charity during the accounting period. ___________________________________________________________________ Please read the Independent Examination guidance on the OSCR website for further information about the requirements and best practice procedures. You can choose to view the guidance in full or read specific sections which have been written with partic-ular groups in mind. Many accountancy organisations will provide the Independent Examination service to charities and listed below are two organisations based in the Renfrewshire who offer this service. For more information about their service and the costs please contact them directly:

Launching Play Fair our campaign in partnership with Zero Tolerance

White Ribbon Scotland are working with Zero Tolerance to end gender discrimination in our children's toys! It might not sound important, but from birth we tell boys and girls how to think and feel. Girls should like pink and baking, boys should like blue and sports. Often children grow up in an environment where they feel the need to conform to this or feel less like a girl or a boy. Looking at it like this, it becomes more important.

From a young age, boys are also told to be aggressive and are told a very unhealthy story about masculinity, one that is often critical of boys having anything in common with girls. It is these issues that create our sexist culture. This campaign challenges marketing companies, stores and manufacturers to take a look at the impact these toys have and asks them to stop stereotyping children. Interested? Get involved!

-Join the Facebook Group -Post photos of stereotypical toys on our Tumblr

We will be holding a campaign training day THIS SATURDAY the 20th of April at the Melting Point, Rose Street, Edinburgh, 1.30 - 4.30 pm. Come along and get skills to campaign and create change.

To register simply email us.

VAF runs a number of Open Grants Programmes – the Volunteering Cluster Support, the

Volunteering Support Grant and the Glasgow Third Sector Transformation Fund.

These are funds which VAF manages and are open to application from eligible groups and organisations. The funding and

support VAF provides enables community based organisations to involve volunteers, undertake projects that challenge

inequalities and overcome barriers to being involved in community life.

This Fund is open to support third sector organisations to create new volunteering projects; increase the diversity of their

volunteers (especially those experiencing disadvantage); and improve opportunities, skills and personal development through

volunteering. The Fund will also help organisations enhance their services and improve their capacity to deploy, support and

train volunteers. Organisations with an annual income of under £250,000 can apply, although priority will be given to those

with an income under £100,000. The following two grant programmes are available through the Fund for up to 12 months of

activity:

Volunteering Support Grant

A grant of up to £10,000 for an individual organisation. Application deadlines: Friday 10th May 2013 and Friday 28th February 2014.
