Hear the words from Jeremiah 29.11 “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” I believe that many people have been praying and discerning God’s will to help us plan some incredible faith forming events to provide hope in the lives of many people this summer. These plans are very much guided by God to help us grow deeper in our relationship with God by seeking ways to engage God in our daily life. If you feel God has gifted you with playing an instrument, singing or being a puppeteer then I would encourage you to share those gifts during our Sunday morning worship services (9am & 11am) and our worship at Rosecrest Lutheran Retirement community. On the 4th Sunday of each month (June 22, July 27, August 24) at 2:30pm we lead worship for some of the residents at Rosecrest. During the summer is an especially great time for you to try sharing your gifts in worship. Some activities that we have going on each week are the Wednesday Bible Study, Worship and Lunch (please sign up in the fellowship hall). The Women of the ELCA (WELCA) have meetings and activities that can involve all the women of the church. Every 4th Monday evening, each month the Lutheran Men in Mission gather together for food, fun and fellowship. There is usually an engaging speaker who helps us better understand how God is active in our community. During the summer we also adjust our Christian Education opportunities. Beginning June 15 th , every Sunday morning there will be a movie series for kids and their families. Adult classes continue with the addition of the Pastor’s forum, which begins July 13-August 17. This summer several of our pastors (active and retired) will help us better understand the book of Romans. At the beginning of this month we will have Baccalaureate Sunday, a time when we recognize our graduates; Newberry College Sunday, when we highlight the Lutheran college in South Carolina; Pentecost Sunday when we celebrate the birth of the church & Confirmation when we rejoice with Connor Lawson & Phillip Riser as they affirm their baptismal vows. Then, later this month we offer the St. John's Day Camp 8:30-4:30 from June 9-13 (page 8). Towards the end of this month the LCY will be very active in their Annual In-Town Mission Trip, June 23-27 (page 8). This is an excellent opportunity for our youth to see the need for God’s love and grace in our own community of Spartanburg County. The last Sunday of this month is a 5 th Sunday, which we have come to know as Servant Sunday (page 9) Other summer highlights are: July 6-12 Joint Confirmation Camp & HS LCY camp experience at Lutherock in Linnville, NC; August 6-7 Mobile Food Pantry; August 24 Rally Sunday, Blessing of the Backpacks, Teacher Appreciation; August 31 Servant Sunday. There are sign-up sheets and registrations for the events in the fellowship hall and on our website, and you may feel free to call the church office 864-583-8167. We know the summer is a great time for vacations, but when you are away please remember that God will be inspiring many people through the ministries of St. John’s…so keeping up with your financial contributions is another excellent way of supporting the spiritual growth plans for this summer. Thank you for prayerfully considering how God is encouraging you to be part of the ministries to provide hope for you and others. Peace, Pastor Mike

Look at all the possibilities for spiritual growth this summer! That’s right…I was looking over the summer calendar and wanted to make sure that everyone who may be reading this knows about the eventful summer that is being planned. Hear the words from Jeremiah 29.11 “For surely I know the plans I have

for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” I believe that many people have been praying and discerning God’s will to help us plan some incredible faith forming events to provide hope in the lives of many people this summer. SERVANT SUNDAY – PLC JUNE 29th

We will have one service in the PLC followed by a Potluck

Lunch and Servant activities. See p. 9 for details.

Summer’s here, so let’s have some fun! Make plans to come to the Sunday School picnic from 12-

4pm on June 22. A sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall. We’ll meet at the picnic area near the batting cages in Duncan Park

for some old-fashion fun for ‘all’ ages—lawn darts, horseshoes, croquet, chatting, and a pickup game of softball. There’s plenty of parking and shade and a playground for little ones. Bring your picnic games, chairs and blankets, lunch for your family, and a dessert to share. Additional tables would be appreciated; contact Leslie Connor with questions or if you have a table to loan for the afternoon.

CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH THE CONN FAMILY! Wednesday - July 4th

146 Winfield Dr. 5pm – until!

Improvements to the Parish Life Center sound

system are on the way! We will be upgrading the sound board, adding new speakers, and making other subtle improvements. These changes will enhance our worship and make it easier to use the PLC for community functions. The cost of this upgrade will be less than $8,000. We expect to have it done by mid-summer. This summer, all members of St. John's are invited to consider donating to help fund this expense. Any donations in excess of actual costs will be added to our PLC fund. Hearing the spoken Word and celebrating the Lord through His music is so crucial to our worship experience! These tools enrich and enhance the message delivered by our spiritual leaders and our musicians.

IN MEMORIAM 2014 Please pray for the family of this loved one

who has passed into life eternal.

FOUR KEYS FOR PRACTICING

FAITH:

1. Caring

Conversations

2. Devotions

3. Service

4. Rituals

AAA

CHRISTIANS:

1. Authentic

2. Available

3. Affirming

These Five Principals describe how faith is formed and passed on from one generation to another. They describe the essence of the church and what it means to be part of the body of Christ.

1. Faith is formed by the power of the Holy Spirit through personal trusted relationships – often in our homes. 2. The church is a living partnership between the ministry of the congregation and the ministry of the home.

3. Where Christ is present in faith, the home is church, too. 4. Faith is caught more that it is taught. 5. If we want Christian children and youth, we need

Christian adults.

VIBRANT FAITH MINISTRIES

FIVE PRINCIPALS FOR LIVING AND PASSING ON FAITH

HEALTH MINISTRY: June is Men’s Health Month June celebrates Father’s Day, a day of recognition of our fathers. Expressions of love and appreciation are certainly in order. Please share these important tips on men’s health with the fathers and men in your life. Naturally prostate cancer comes to mind first. Let’s also look at several other important topics. Testicular cancer mainly affects young men between the ages of 20 and 39. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, or lumps in your testicles or groin area. Most cases can be treated, especially if found early. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. Regular exams after treatment are important. Performing a TSE (testicular self exam) is important. You will find the instructions by going to www.medlineplus.gov and entering the topic.

Breast Cancer also affects men, perhaps not as common as in women, still a serious illness. Several risk factors appear to be linked to male breast cancer as with women: aging and family history. Average age of men with breast cancer is 68 years. Family history is important the risk is increased if other blood relatives have had breast cancer. Smoking is the number one related cause of death in men and women. Smoking is linked to cancer of the mouth, colon/rectal cancer and pancreatic cancer. Smoking affects infertility. Pancreatic cancer is higher in men who smoke and have diabetes. Obviously, it attributes to lung cancer. If you smoke, please consider quitting. If you have a loved one who smokes, please consider encouraging them to quit. Prostate Cancer is probably one of the most common men’s health concerns. It is common among older men but does affect younger men especially if they have a family history of prostate cancer. The African-American has a higher risk to prostate cancer. It is important for men to begin having their prostate checked around the age 45. If you have a family history, then begin at 40. The blood test PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) and a physical exam is the basic screening. If the PSA is elevated a prostate biopsy may be in order. Men in general need to pay more attention to their health. Often our role as mothers and wives are to encourage the men in our life to have regular check- ups and be aware of changes. Compared to women statistics reveal more men smoke/drink alcoholic beverages, make or ignore unhealthy choices, and often put off regular medical check ups.

Like Church, your home is also your sanctuary. St. John’s Lutheran Church has partnered with Vibrant Faith Ministries to help connect faith and home by providing easy and accessible ways to become more intentional in your faith practices.

The goal of this ministry is to equip & empower families to:

* TALK with each other

about their faith

* PRAY together in ways that

are comfortable and

comforting

* REACH OUT in service

and support to others in the

community

*RITUALIZE the important

milestones - no matter how big or small

With the help of Vibrant Faith Ministries, St. John’s hopes to create energy and momentum around the congregation’s vision to create faith practices beyond the congregational setting. The emphasis of this ministry is placed upon the value of all God’s people to be active participants as communicators and nurturers of the faith, especially to children, youth, and families.

MUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTES JUNE 2014

The aim and final reason for all music should be nothing else but the glory of God and the refreshment of the Spirit. J.S.Bach

During the summer months, we depend on solos and ensembles to present the special music. If you would be able to sing or play or participate in a small ensemble, please talk to me. Share your musical gifts with the congregation this summer.

The last Sunday that the Chancel Choir will sing will be June 15th. After that we will need people in the choir loft to

lead the services during the summer months. If you are a singer, or if you would just like to experience the service from a different perspective, consider taking a “Summer Seat” in the choir loft. This invitation includes young people, also! You can choose to sit there one Sunday or all summer! The choir does not process or sing anthems during the summer. Your help would be greatly appreciated in leading the services and welcoming visitors.

Handbell News: The Handbell Clinic was fantastic! It was a great experience for all 90 ringers who participated, and the audience was very appreciative! Dr. Ivey imparted a lot of knowledge to the ringers while making it a fun experience. -- St. John’s Handbell Choir will present its last prelude on June 1st at the 11:00 service. This lovely piece features a violin solo to be played by Chris Hicks. -- Regular Bell rehearsals will end for the summer on May 29th. -- A group of four ringers will present an Outreach program at White Oak Estates on Thursday, June 19

th, at 4:00

pm in the Assisted Living area. All of St. John’s members who live at WOE are invited to join us for this program.

Chancel Choir rehearsals will end on June 12th. We bid a sad farewell to Lisa Brown, who has been a mainstay for the alto section. She is moving to Arizona with her job. She will be missed!!!

There will be no Fine Arts Day Camp again this summer. It will be incorporated into the Day Camp, along with VBS. This camp will run June 9 – 13 with a closing program on Friday, June 13th, at 6:00 pm in the PLC.

Consider Lutheridge/Lutherock now! Camp weeks begin in June.

The Christian Education committee needs your input to help make the fall line-up of Sunday school classes the best it can be. What do you want in a class? How can we help your faith grow? We want to hear all your thoughts on Sunday school at St. John’s! Each meeting is designed for a specific group, but everyone is encouraged to come to any meeting that fits their schedule. Calling all youth! If you are a rising 5th grader through 12th grader,

you are invited to join our Crucifer and Acolyte Service Team – C.A.S.T.

This is a fantastic way to serve at St. John’s during the 11:00am

Traditional Service. We can work with your personal schedule. Your

service time can be noted on scholarship and college applications too!

Our next training date will be on Sunday, August 10th, immediately

following the traditional service. Lunch will be provided. Call the church

office 583-8167 or call Mrs. Dana Homan 978-2422 to let us know if you want to

become a member.

Did you ever wonder what it takes to become a

SUPERHERO?SUPERHERO?SUPERHERO?SUPERHERO?

Superheroes need your help! Volunteers and snack donations are needed for St. John’s own Superhero Training Camp, coming June 9-13. Needed snacks include goldfish cracker, Oreos, pretzels, vanilla wafers, apples, grapes, baby carrots, and bananas. Bins for non-perishables will be in the fellowship hall, PLC, and near the church office; please bring fruit to Carl’s Kitchen beginning June 6. Open volunteer positions include snack and lunch organization (no cooking involved); skit actors (mornings only); help with the potluck meal on Friday evening; and teams to set up tables and program props Friday morning and to clean up on Friday evening. The summer day camp is an important ministry at St. John’s, and volunteers make it possible for the kids to have fun and engage God at the same time. Contact Pastor Emily, Jody Scott, Melissa Carson, or Leslie Connor to volunteer or with questions.
