GRAND-AM, ALMS Announce Class Structurefor Unified SeriesUnderscoring the cooperative spirit ofthe merger agreement they signedlast September, GRAND-AM RoadRacing and the American Le MansSeries presented by Tequila Patronhave unveiled the initial concept forthe organizations’ unified competi-

tion class structure, which will debutin January 2014 at the 52nd runningof the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The lineup – in effect for the 2014and 2015 seasons – is based on a phi-losophy of inclusion, the two organi-zations say. The majority of classesfrom both the GRAND-AM RolexSports Car Series and the ALMS willbe retained with the exception of theALMS’ P1 prototype class.

While individual class nameshave yet to be determined, key fea-tures of the planned structure in-clude:

• GRAND-AM’s DP and theALMS’ P2 classes will combine intoone, headlining prototype class thatalso will include the revolutionaryDeltaWing prototype, with perform-ance of the cars balanced to maintainclose competition.

• The ALMS’ Prototype Challenge(PC) class for spec prototypes willcontinue to run as a separate class.

• Both of the organizations’ pro-duction-based GT classes will con-

tinue as separate, distinct categoriesbased on performance, preservingeach class’ proud history and loyalfan following. As part of this plan,the ALMS’ GTC cars will join theGRAND-AM GTs.

• GRAND-AM’s new GX class,which is debuting at this year’sRolex 24 later this month, is beingexplored as a possible addition to theGRAND-AM half of the GT mix in2014-15. There also is the possibilitythat GX will run separately as a fifthclass.

Specifications for all classes are stillbeing determined and will be an-nounced later this year. In addition, thetwo groups say there will be continueddiscussion regarding the increasing in-clusion of green technologies in thenew unified series.

The foundationof the NASCAR-Approved Spec En-gine is a productionGM LS2 block (6.0L/ 4.000) with LS2CNC ported heads.Fully assembled the364 cubic inch en-gine weighs around415 pounds andproduces approxi-mately 610hp and500 ft-lbs of torque.Its components in-clude products from leading industrysuppliers.

The Spec Engine is not a “sealed”engine and NASCAR rules do allowteams to assemble, disassemble and re-build the Spec Engine but no modifica-tions to the components are allowedother than what is stated in the currentrule books.

MAHLE Clevite Honors 2012MAHLE Engine Builders OfThe YearMAHLE Clevite has announced the2012 MAHLE Engine Builders of theYear for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Se-

ries, Nationwide Series and CampingWorld Truck Series. The Engine Builderof the Year award is presented to thetop engine builder in each of theNASCAR series who has accumulatedthe most MAHLE Clevite points basedon qualifying, laps led and finishingposition.

Shane Parsnow of Hendrick Motor-sports was awarded the 2012 MAHLEEngine Builder of the Year title for theSprint Cup Series based on the per-formance of the No. 48 Chevy Impaladriven by Jimmie Johnson. This year’saward brings the coveted prize back toHendrick Motorsports since fellow en-gine builder Earl Wheeler wasawarded the prize in 2010. Parsnow ac-cumulated a total of 378 MAHLE Cle-vite points.

“It is a great honor to receive theMAHLE Engine Builder of the Yearaward and bring it back to Hendrickthis year,” said Parsnow. “I’d like totake this opportunity to thank MAHLEClevite for supplying our race teamwith the quality parts that have helped

bring this award home – our 16th En-gine Builder of the Year title.”

Mark Cronquist, engine builder forJoe Gibbs Racing (JGR), was also backon top, earning his sixth MAHLE En-gine Builder of the Year title in the Na-tionwide Series – this time for his workon the No. 18 Toyota Camry – earninga total of 429 MAHLE Clevite Points.

“The MAHLE Clevite EngineBuilder of the Year is a great accom-plishment, and I’m proud to bring itback to JGR this year,” said Cronquist.“Many thanks to MAHLE Clevite forconsistently providing unprecedentedtechnical support and high-perfor-mance racing products that continue toout-perform every year.”

Not only did Hendrick Motorsportsreceive the prize for NASCAR SprintCup Series, but Bruce Stauffer also wasawarded the MAHLE Engine Builderof the Year title for the NASCARCamping World Truck Series. ■

It’s a late-August Sunday in 1988and I am staging up my OutlawPro Stocker for the final at theWorld Series of Drag Racing at Cor-dova, IL. I am driving my leg-endary ’79 Mercury Zephyr (Zeke)powered by the NOS assisted 1,600hp “Monolith,” a 672-inch KaaseBoss Hemi Ford engine.

I need to win this final to cap theUDRA (United Drag Racer Assoc.)season national championship. Theproblem is, I have two badly burntpistons. And I am facing a healthyGary Duckworth in his lethalMountain Motor Camaro. And healso needs this win to capture theUDRA championship.

Using my “nitrous demontweak,” I adjusted for the semis toensure lane choice. I won the semishandedly and evenset a record, but as Icrossed the stripe Ismelled that sicken-ing smell of burntaluminum and oiladvertising burntpistons that all ni-trous racers hate. That poignantsmell stays with you for days.

As luck would have it, burningthe pistons so late in the runmeant that not much smoke wasevident to those watching. No onerealized the “Monolith” was hurt.The announcer kept carrying onabout me setting a record andgoing into the finals against aworthy Duckworth, and both ofour chances of winning the cham-pionship.

When my crew arrived to towme back I advised them of our

problem. I stressed not to revealany sign that we had one. Wewould bluff our way to the final.We towed back waving to thecheering crowd as they stompedtheir feet and yelled with synco-pated rhythm, Ani-Mal! Ani-Mal!

Lucky for us, the jet cars andwheel standers were staged to per-form. The only people in the pitarea would be the UDRA finalistsattending to their business.

My damaged piston fears wererealized after pulling the sparkplugs. One and seven had tipsburnt off. Leak down and crankingcompression was down 90% onthose two holes.

Back in ’88 we were still usingmoly rings. The problem with molyand nitrous was the coating on the

top ring would chip and flake aftera few runs. Another problem wasthe fly cuts on the Ford Boss Hemisleft little material between the endof the angled cut and the top ringgroove. Too hot of a charge and thering groove would create a “smile”widening the groove several thou-sands for about an inch in length,allowing the nitrous charged flameto get under the ring, breaking itinto small pieces. It melted thatarea of the piston on the top edgeand down the side, creating havocwith the cylinder walls, depositingmelted aluminum and bits of hardbroken ring material generouslyaround the combustion chamberand between seats and valves.Even on some innocent cylinders.

sisted Ford Boss Hemi you could beta piston on that cylinder was se-verely damaged. Ni chrome Hellfirerings were still in the distance. Butwhen they did arrive, a lot of pistonfailures were reduced.

Using Hellfire rings, if the tune upwas too frisky and a plug wasnipped, the ring would stay intact.There may be a slight smile orpinched ring, but you could retunethat cylinder’s NOS Fogger nozzle oruse a colder plug and still make re-spectable power.

This time, though, we had severedamage. Even if I had a spare enginewith me, there was no time for thator to replace the pistons. We had toband-aid what we had to make thefinal. We had dealt with this situa-tion before. We prepped the car asnormal, except I put blank jets in thefogger nozzles of the hurt pistons.That is the big advantage of a NOSfogger over plates and spray bars;the ability to isolate and customizeeach cylinder’s nitrous tune-up.

We tie wrapped shop towelsaround the breathers and stuffedthem at the ends of the tunnel ram toabsorb the expected oil blow by. I setthe retard back two more degreesand raised my starting line chip revcontrol up 500 rpm.

I would be way down on powerwith only 6 good cylinders. But I hadlane choice. I would take the rightlane. Duckworth didn’t know wewere hurt. My only hope wasGary would adjust more clutch pres-sure in his car trying to beat me andperhaps shake the tires enough andnot recover to come back at me. Theleft lane that weekend had been afrequent tire shaker. There was also achance he would foul or break. I hadto go for it. This run could be a hugeturning point for me.

We got lucky with extra pit time asthe wheel stander's sparks from theirtitanium wheelie cleats had caught thedry grass along the track on fire.

The fire out and the exhibitionshow finally over, the crowd headedback to the pits.

I advised my crew again to act as ifall was well. We all put on a good actat my trailer as I signed autographsand held court with the fans andmedia.

It was time. My crew towed me to

staging. When the staging lane wran-gler motioned for us to pull out, I didnot try to fire. As planned, my crewpushed me out and into the waterbox. Duckworth fired and drove in.Knowing how bad I would smoke sig-naling severe damage. I did not firemy car until the water box official sig-naled us to burnout. With a slightgroan the Monolith fired. Line lockedin the water, I started my burn out

quickly so the tire smoke would cam-ouflage the oil smoke. Normally Iwould start my burnout in third andthen shift to fourth. But down onpower I started in second-then shiftedmy Lenco to third – then to fourth.Zeke miraculously went up on thetires as should be. I let go of the linelock with the throttle down and letZeke eat. I cut my burnout short –only 200 feet. I hated to cheat the fans

out of an AJ trademark long burnout,but I had no choice.

I noticed Duckworth also did a con-servative burnout. Indicating he musthave put more counter weight pres-sure in the clutch and did not want toget it too hot.

As Al Schmitt, my crew chiefbacked me up, the tire, burnt pistonand oil smoke inside my car waskilling me. My eyes were watering andI could hardly see or breathe.

As Duck and I were pulling in tolight the first bulb, the starter suddenlysignals us to shut off. Was my smokingexhaust the reason? But he shut usboth off. The still smoldering grass hadcaught fire again. What bought us timeearlier now was a negative. Would theoil-plug-soaked Monolith restart?

By now everyone realized from theearlier excessive smoke, that my en-

gine wasimpaired.I’m sureif Duckworth had increased the clutchpressure he now regretted it. But therewas nothing he could do. He couldburn me down while staging. But thatwas not Gary’s style.

The grass fire was out. The startersignaled Duck and I to fire. Duck-worth’s car went varoom! Mine wentgrunt! Grunt! Grunt! Then miracu-lously the still game 672-inch Mono-lith fired. Smoking profusely.

Fearing the starter would shut medown, I quickly pulled up, set theline lock and bumped in, lightingboth the prestage and stage bulbs atonce. Duckworth followed suit al-most simultaneously (Thank YouGary). The pro start yellows flashed – I cut a great light and was out a car

length on him. I pulled second –Zeke veered right from the oilyresidue my headers were spewing. Icorrected and Zeke amazingly setback straight in the groove. Then as Ipulled the Lenco’s third gear lever, Isaw Gary’s yellow Camaro in myside window starting to pass mycrippled ride.

Suddenly Gary’s Camaro disap-peared. A miracle! Gary had shookhis tires hard and had to abort. Shift-ing to fourth gear, not knowing atthe time how severe Gary’s problemwas, I stayed on wood to ensure mylead in case he recovered and tried to

catch me. He did not. Theslipping, sliding and smok-ing last eighth-mile of myride seemed forever. I musthave looked like a cropduster. There was so muchburnt piston and oil smokeinside I could not breathe

or see a thing. When I blindly judgedI was across the stripe, I pulled thechute and clicked off the power. Stillat about 180 mph, I took off my seatharness and put my door net down.Not able to see the turn off lane Ikept Zeke straight ahead.

As I slowed, still slightly rolling, Iopened the door and climbed outgasping for air like a drowning man.The safety people came to the sceneto attend to me. When I recoveredsome, I looked: Zeke had stoppedonly a few feet from the sand trap.

My crew came with a truck full ofwild cheering crew. We towed backwaving to the frantic crowd, whoagain were stomping and chantingfor me. The PA was blaring my vic-tory. Zeke and I were an oily mess.My throat was so sore I could hardlyspeak. It took a week to recover fromthat putrid smell of burnt aluminumand oil. But we had done it. I hadbluffed my way to win the event andthe 1988 UDRA championship. AllDuckworth had to say was, “I willnever play poker with you.”

I called it “Educated Luck!” Lotsand lots of luck! ■

Ed Pink opened his engine build-ing shop in 1960, and following amove to a new facility in 1965,opted to promote the business bybuilding his own Top Fuel Dragster.Dubbed “The Old Master,” the carwas a dominant force at a numberof important events and other rac-ers took note.

Soon, business began to boom.So much so, that it necessitatedmoving to larger quarters twice in

two years, culminating with the fa-cility in Van Nuys that it occupiestoday (albeit with expanding into

the next buildingand now boastingapproximately12,000 square feet ofspace).

There was explo-sive growth in dragracing during the late1960s and into the1970s and Ed PinkRacing Engines rodethe crest of the wave.It came to be that themajority of drag rac-ing stars from the era,

including Don “The Snake” Prud-homme, Don Schumacher, Tom“The Mongoose” McEwen, Kenny

Bernstein, Shirley Muldowney,Ed “The Ace” McCulloch andRaymond Beadle (“Blue Max”)relied on “Pink Elephant”power.

However, by 1978 Pink as-tutely observed that many ofthe prominent fuel teams wereheading toward in-house pro-grams, and consequently broad-ened the scope of the company

by working on FordCosworth engines.Soon, there were cars atthe Indy 500 with Pinkpower, including driv-ers like Al Unser, Sr.and Tom Sneva (the1983 Indy 500 winner).

Following the Cosworth’s reignat Indy, EPRE focused on the tur-bocharged Buick V6 and Nissan’sInfiniti program. It was here that Edcame to work with Frank Hon-sowetz, who was the Infiniti pro-gram head, and later joined EPRE asGeneral Manager – a post he holdsto this day. Interspersed with the In-dyCar activities was a Porsche pro-

gram with Jim Busby for races likethe 24 Hours of Daytona.

Pink engines have also enjoyedconsiderable success in USACMidget and Silver Crown competi-tion, with Steve Lewis’ team ac-counting for no less than ten Midgetchampionships with Ford and Toy-ota power (and drivers like TonyStewart, Kasey Kahne and JasonLefler), plus four Silver Crownsprint car titles with small blockFord power.

In 2008, Ed decided he needed tocut back on his workload and cameto sell the business to good cus-tomer Tom Malloy. Tom has been aprominent competitor in vintageracing circles, and also has a consid-erable collection of storied race cars.Frank has the day-to-day manage-rial responsibility for EPRE, whilePink serves as a consultant: his pen-chant for thoroughness and atten-tion to detail are woven into thefabric of the shop.

EPRE is organized into a networkof divisions: administrative, engi-neering, quality control, machineshop, assembly, testing, manufactur-ing and warehousing. A cadre ofskilled and dedicated employees isalso central to the success of EdPink Racing Engines – some ofwhom have been with the firm for30-plus years. A mixture of experi-enced leaders and young, ambitioustechnicians serves the companywell.

The quality of the parts that comein the front door have a significantbearing on the engines that go out

the back door of the shop. Accord-ingly, all supplier components arethoroughly examined to verify thatthey’re exactly as ordered – muchthe same as common practice in theaerospace industry. A precisionBrown & Sharp CMM (coordinate-measuring machine) is employed asneeded. Years of experience havetaught EPRE that what’s in the boxisn’t necessarily what the label saysit is.

Without question, the strongestsuit of Ed Pink Racing Engines isthe firm’s ability to tackle virtuallyany project. At the time of this writ-ing, the cornucopia of engines andcylinder heads being worked onranged from common small blockand big block Chevys, to a Bugatti,MGB, Novi, Offenhauser, Porsche993, Daimler Hemi V8, and a replicaof a converted aircraft engine thatwon the 1919 Pike’s Peak hill climbin a car. A couple months from nowthere are surely to be another groupof eclectic projects underway. Theoldest engine they’ve ever rebuiltwas a 1916 National (was manufac-tured in Indianapolis), which won aChamp Car race. You can see whywalking through the facility wouldbe a memorable experience for anytrue gearhead, given the wide vari-ety of projects typically in progress.

EPRE has a fully equipped auto-motive machine shop that can han-dle every imaginable task; alignboring, block decking, boring, hon-ing, etc. And given the lack of com-mercially available products formany of the rare engines beingprepped, EPRE is adept at makingfixtures, torque plates, etc. as re-quired.

Testing is an area where EPREhas considerable expertise, as youwould expect of a firm that’s done amassive amount of R&D for contractracing programs, developmentwork for NASCAR, as well as Ford,Toyota and Nissan.

The company operates two so-phisticated dyno cells that utilizemodified Heenan Froude dy-namometers and state-of-the-artdata collection systems. There isalso a complete Spintron test cell foranalyzing valve train components.Other test equipment includes fuel,oil and air flow benches, as well as a

unique ignition testing device.Attention to detail in all facets of

engine building – from determiningwhat components are best suited tothe project to precise and methodi-cal assembly – are hallmarks ofEPRE. This is reflected in every en-gine project that comes in the door,and is carefully documented andmoved through the shop with spe-cial dedicated parts carts.

In addition to building engines,EPRE has come to manufacture avariety of specialized componentsthat meet the firm’s high standards.An in-house engineering team uti-lizes the latest CAD solid modelingand three-dimensional software fordesigning, and the company hasequipment that ranges from numeri-cally controlled mills and lathes to aHaas CNC vertical machining cen-ter.

A number of the special compo-nents used by EPRE are availablecommercially. These include drysump oil pumps, oil and fuel filters,and water pumps. The ultra-com-pact oil pumps feature a twin-loberotor design that has been opti-mized through extensive flowbench, dyno and on-track testing. A

If the performance business isabout one thing – it’s about im-proving upon what comes in the

door and making it better for yourcustomer’s application, whetherhe’s racing down the quarter mile,hitting the twists and turns of a nat-ural road course, or just driving it tothe movie theater with his girl byhis side and a lumpy cam at thelights.

The cylinder head is the heart ofthe engine, it characterizes the en-tire engine build. With this in mind,we spoke with several manufactur-ers to get their take on where themarket is now and how to select theright component for your build.

One of the reasons for the shift tonew heads vs. old cores is that manycores are no longer available or arein rough condition, and itwould take too much timeto bring them back to life.In other cases, heads thatare designed for OE pur-poses are not good enoughfor today’s high horsepower racingapplications. Therefore, the after-market stepped up to fill this need.

Cylinder head manufacturershave, for the most part, conditionedengine builders and racers to thinkof the market in three major cate-gories based on performance, dura-bility and cost. The largest categoryis street or entry level performance.This category is filled with budget-friendly, mild performance cylinderheads that are a step up from OEM.These heads used to be almost ex-clusively cast iron, but are nowmostly aluminum. “Most heads inour budget category come fully as-

sembled to save the customer thehassle of selecting the proper com-ponents,” says Mike Downs of TrickFlow. “They’re a bolt on and godeal.”

The next category is the high-endracing heads designed to deliversignificant performance increasesand are usually assembled by ashop with the highest quality com-ponents. “Racing heads are the mostexpensive category because applica-tions are specialized and manytimes custom-tailored to suit theneeds of a race engine program,”says Downs.

The real growth, according to ourexperts, has been in “mid-level”heads. You might call them high-performance street or “weekendwarrior” competition heads. Engine

builders and

enthusiasts at this level demandhigh quality, durability and excel-lent performance results. They alsodemand CNC machining – it’s prac-tically the price of entry nowadaysto this category.

According to Downs, all of TrickFlow’s mid-level heads featureCNC-profiled combustion chambersplus fully CNC “street ported” in-take and exhaust runners.

Head manufacturers such asEdelbrock, EngineQuest and othersalso offer CNC ported heads forstreet/strip applications. But it de-pends on the customers’ needs.

“Many of our race head salesstart with a conversation betweenthe engine builder and head porter,”says Edelbrock’s Smitty Smith.

about who has the biggest numbers,according to the experts we inter-viewed. Numbers are important,but so are matchedcombinations.

Experts say it isimportant to matchthe head and intaketo your applicationand intended use(i.e., rpm range). “Cylinder headsare only a small portion of the‘power equation,’” says En-gineQuest’s Eric Haugland. “A goodset of cylinder heads on a poor com-bination will yield virtually nothingbut matched with the right combi-nation, it can make a huge differ-ence in horsepower.”

It is a good idea to have a conver-sation with your customer withquestions based on the cubic inch ofthe engine build and other parame-ters, according to our experts.

“We typically ask a lot about aprospective customer’s engine,”says Haugland. “Is weight a factor

in this build? We also like to knowcam type and other componentsthey are running. How many rpms

is the customer is looking for is alsoimportant to head selection. Portsize at this point becomes an issue.”

exhaust header, and therocker system all bolt to thehead most engine builds usestock geometry heads forsimplicity. As the buildermoves up in horsepowerlevels, the stock geometrybecomes a severe hindranceto airflow and combustionchamber efficiency. By rais-ing the intake and exhaustports up air flow is in-creased, and the valves canbe rotated up creating amore compact combustionchamber. Huge power po-tential is unlocked, buteverything, the piston, theintake and exhaust systems,the valve train is all new.

“At Edelbrock we workwith the piston and valve-train companies to ensurecompatible product is avail-able, and of course we havethe intake manifold solu-tions,” says Edelbrock’sSmitty Smith.

“We are beginning a newresearch program at Edel-brock that we call DynamicMatching,” explains Smith.

“Following the same course taken by academic as wellas factory research laboratories we can foresee a wholenew way of looking at the good old power package.Traditional thoughts about port size, flow velocity, com-bustion process, and exhaust events are being chal-lenged and in some cases with surprising results.

Contrary to popular belief, Smith says that small,high flowing ports with efficient combustion chambersare always in fashion. “It continues to be the case thattrends in racing work their way into the street perform-ance stuff, and we are committed to excellence in bothstreet and now racing as well.”

Experts say that for good throttle response on thestreet, an engine needs high air velocity below 4,000

The result is an in-credibly strong, super densesand casting that has threetimes the fatigue life andnearly the consistency of bil-let aluminum.


rpm. And contrary to the bigger-is-better philosophy, you need smallerintake runners and valves, not biggerones at this operating rpm. The re-striction from smaller runners andvalves gets air velocity up and moreair/fuel in your combustion chamberfor maximum power for those stop-light to stoplight kind of performanceyour street customers crave. Thedown side of this is the restriction be-comes power robbing above 4,500rpm because the engine starves forair.

Conversely, in racing you need alot of air at higher rpms, say experts.This calls for larger runners, biggervalves, compression ratios above 10.5:1 and porting.These give verygood air flowand velocityabove 5,000 rpmwhere you reallyneed the engine

to breathe. For the street, this bigcombo would give your engine poorthrottle response, low torque, andwould be generally not much fun foryour customer to drive. ■

EngineQuest’s new big blockChevy replacement cylinder headssurpass most production units byproducing outstanding horsepowerand torque improvements for virtu-ally all BBC engines from a mild 454to a supercharged 572.

An engine’s power potential de-pends on how much air itbreathes and the fuel it burns.

Engine modifications such as largerbores and longer strokes add displace-ment, which increase airflow andpower. Bigger valves, CNC portedheads and a hotter camshaft with in-creased lift and duration also increaseairflow for more power as enginerpms go up. A big CFM carburetor ormultiple carbs also allow more air andfuel into the engine. Need morepower? A supercharger or tur-bocharger can stuff even more air andfuel into an engine. Just turn up theboost pressure and you can make evenmore power.

But regardless of what kind of me-chanical modifications you make to anengine, or how much air and fuel youtray to cram into the cylin-ders, eventually the pointis reached where the en-gine is maxed out in termsof how much horsepowerit can make on pump gas.The limiting factors are theoctane rating of the fueland how much oxygen is required toburn the fuel.

For street performance applications,most premium grade unleaded pumpgasoline carries an anti-knock octanerating of 91 to 93. In some areas youcan get higher octane pump gas, butavailability may be limited. Unleaded93 pump gas is certainly better thanregular unleaded 87 octane gas, but itisn’t high enough to handle the com-pression ratios or boost pressures com-monly used in many racing engines.Because of this, most naturally aspi-rated street engines are typically lim-

ited to a static compression ratio of 10-1/2 to 1 or maybe 11 to 1. Withboosted engines, the limit may be 8 to11 psi of boost with a static compres-sion ratio of maybe 8 or 9 to 1. Inter-cooling and water injection help butthere is a limit as to how much com-pression and boost an engine cansafely handle without risking detona-tion on unleaded pump gas.

Understanding Octane NumbersThe octane rating of fuels can be con-fusing because of the different waysoctane can be determined. Octane is anumerical rating of how well a fuel re-sists detonation and/or preignitionunder high temperature and pressure.The higher the octane rating, the betterthe fuel resists detonation and the

more compres-

sion and/or boost pressure it cansafely handle.

Octane ratings are determinedthree different ways. One method isthe Research Octane Number (RON).The performance of the test fuel iscompared to a standard base fuel (amixture of isooctane and heptane) in aspecial single cylinder engine that hasa variable compression ratio whilerunning at idle speed (600 rpm).

Another method is the Motor Oc-tane Number (MON), which is alsodone in a lab by running the test fuelin an engine at a higher temperatureand rpm, while varying ignition tim-ing. The MON number typically turnsout to be about 8 to 10 point lowerthan the RON number due to themore demanding nature of the MONtest.

tane Number or Anti-Knock IndexRating (AKI). This is a numerical aver-age of the RON plus MON octane rat-ings divided by two (R+M/2). Thepump octane number is the one that isdisplayed on fuel dispensers at fillingstations.

The highest octane number is theRON value, and the lowest is theMON value. So if a fuel supplier onlyquotes the higher RON octane numberfor a product, it may give the impres-sion that the fuel has a higher octanerating than a competitor’s fuel. Sowhen comparing the relative octaneratings of different fuels, look at thePump Octane Numbers.

Understanding GasolineGasoline is not a single chemical com-pound but a soup of up to 150 or moredifferent hydrocarbons and other ad-ditives. The energy content and octanerating of gasoline will vary with the re-fining process and the final recipe ofthe fuel. The energy content of gaso-line can therefore vary somewhat, butis generally around 125,000 BTUs(British Thermal Units) per gallon.

Some areas of the country have dif-ferent fuel requirements such as vari-ous versions of “reformulatedgasoline” to reduce air pollution. Fuelvolatility and energy content can alsovary with the season and geographiclocation. “Winter” gas typically con-tains a higher percentage of lighter hy-drocarbons so it will evaporate more

easily than “summer” gas for reliablecold weather starting.

The most often quoted air/fuelratio for gasoline is 14.7 to 1, butair/fuel ratios of 12.5 to 12.8 to 1 typi-cally produce the most power. But thiscan also vary somewhat depending onthe fuel blend. That’s one reason whyracing gas is a better alternative topump gas for performance applica-tions. Racing gas is blended to specificproduct specifications so its perform-ance characteristics, energy contentand tuning qualities are much moreconsistent than pump gas.

Leaded Racing GasMany racing fuels are leaded.Tetraethyl lead (TEL) is a great octanebooster when added to gasoline. Itonly takes a tiny amount of TEL toboost the octane rating of gasoline sub-stantially. As an added benefit, TELhelps lubricate hot exhaust valves toreduce valve and seat erosion andwear. But lead was phased out as afuel additive for pump gas back in the1970s and 1980s because it is a neuro-toxin and it fouls catalytic convertersand oxygen sensors. It was replacedwith other octane boosters such asMMT, MTBE and ETBE.

More recently, the use of ethanol al-cohol as a fuel additive has been grow-ing not only to reduce our overallusage of gasoline but to also boost theoctane rating of unleaded gasoline.Many premium octane pump gaso-lines currently contain up to 10%ethanol, and the EPA has recently ap-proved blends of up to 15% (E15) for

widespread use in 2001 and newer en-gines. Blends that contain up to 85%ethanol (E85) are also available for“Flex-Fuel” vehicles that can burn ei-ther gasoline or ethanol.

High octane leaded racing gaso-lines are available in various blendsand octane ratings – but for offroadand racing use only. Leaded fuels arenot street legal. Yeah, some street rac-ers may sneak some leaded racing gasinto their fuel tanks to get an edge, butit is rather expensive fuel for everydaydriving. And if they use more than afew tankfuls of leaded racing gas in alate model street vehicle, they wouldprobably foul their oxygen sensorsand catalytic converter. For street use,a street legal unleaded racing fuelwould be required.

The main advantage of using aleaded racing fuel in an engine is thatit allows the engine to safely handlemore compression or boost pressure. Ifan engine is optimized for a high oc-tane racing fuel by increasing the en-gine’s static compression ratio, it canmake more power than it would onlower octane pump gas.

A leaded racing fuel rated at 107pump octane can typically handlecompression ratios in the 12 to 1 range.Run the engine on 110 pump octaneleaded racing fuel and the compres-sion ratio can be bumped up to 13 to 1.Use 112 pump octane racing fuel andthe engine can be built with up to a 15to 1 compression ratio. These compres-sion ratios may be overly conservativefor some engine builders, and weknow people who successfully runeven higher static compression ratios(up to 17 to 1). A lot depends on thesize of the combustion chamber (smallversus large) and valve overlap andtiming. Even so, the higher the staticcompression ratio, the greater the ther-mal efficiency of the engine and themore power it can squeeze out ofevery drop of fuel. That’s why dieselengines are so efficient compared togasoline engines (and the fact thatdiesel fuel contains more BTUs pergallon than gasoline).

The speed at which a fuel burns alsoaffects engine performance and power.The composition of the fuel will deter-mine the rate at which it burns. Ac-cording to the fuel suppliers we spokewith, fast burning fuels are not the bestchoice for blown motors or engines

Methanol, used by IndyCars for years, iswidely available and can be made fromnatural gas, coal or other feedstocks. It isrelatively inexpensive as far as fuels go,but it contains only about half the BTUcontent of gasoline, so it requires a muchricher air/fuel mixture and a higher flow ca-pacity fuel system.

that are using an additionalpower adder such as NitrousOxide (NOx). A slower burningblend works best in these kindsof applications.

Another variable to con-sider is the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP)rating of the fuel. This refers to the tem-perature and pressure at which the fuelevaporates. The more volatile the fuel,the easier it evaporates and the higherthe RVP rating. But in a hot motor on ahot day, you want a lower RVP ratingso the fuel doesn’t boil in the fuel lineor carburetor and cause vapor lock. Forthis reason, some racing fuel suppliersblend their fuels to keep the RVP downto about 6 psi or less.

The best advice for choosing a par-ticular racing fuel is to follow the fuelsupplier’s recommendations. Productsthat meet very specific requirementsare available for different types of rac-ing, and the best results are usually ob-tained by using a specific racing fuelblend rather than a broader generalpurpose racing fuel.


IndyCar and NASCAR have both switched to ethanol as it is promotedas the “good” alternative to other fuels because it can be made fromrenewable feedstocks, reduce our dependence on petroleum, and isrelatively benign compared to gasoline or methanol as far as its healthand environmental impacts are concerned. Critics argue it damages en-gine components and causes high food prices.

Oxygenated FuelsSome leaded racing fuels are“oxygenated” as are most un-leaded racing fuels. Oxygenat-ing a fuel means adding compounds(typically methanol, ethanol, otheralcohols or propylene oxide) thatcontain additional oxygen. Moreoxygen in the mix means more bangwhen the fuel ignites. Additives suchas propylene oxide can increasepower 7 to 8% with no changes incarburetor jetting.

Fuel suppliers say oxygenatedfuels can typically make up to 3 to7% more power than ordinary fuels.The higher the oxygen content of thefuel, the greater the potential powergains it can deliver.

One fuel supplier said you can es-timate the gain in power by dividingthe oxygen content of the fuel by 3.For example, if a racing fuel is 12%oxygenated by weight, it should pro-duce about a 4% increase in horse-

One engine builder said he gainedan additional 80 horsepower in a1100 hp drag motor just by switchingracing fuels.

Another oxygenate that can bemixed with gasoline to increasepower is nitropropane. It is similar to

nitromethane in that it contains itsown oxygen to help the fuel blendproduce more power. A carburetordoes have to be rejetted richer as thepercentage of nitropropane is in-creased to prevent detonation. A typ-ical mixture is to use 10 to 20%nitropropane with gasoline to realizeabout a 5% gain in horsepower.

MethanolMethanol has long been a popular rac-ing fuel because of its increased powerpotential. Methanol is widely availableand can be made from natural gas,coal or other feedstocks. Its chemicalformula is CH3OH. It contains oxygenand is relatively inexpensive as far asfuels go. But it contains only about halfthe BTU content of gasoline (64,600BTUs/gallon) so it requires a muchricher air/fuel mixture and a higherflow capacity fuel system (larger car-buretor jets, high volume fuel pumpand/or higher flow fuel injectors).Methanol likes RICH fuel mixtures(from 4.5 to 1 to 6.0 to 1 for peakpower) so it takes twice as muchmethanol to produce the same poweras gasoline.

Methanol has a high octane rating:129 RON, 103 MON, or a pump AKIrating of 113. Because of its higher oc-tane rating (which allows more com-pression) and the added oxygencontent, the overall power gain withmethanol can be 10% to 20% or moreover pump gas depending on the com-pression ratio and how the carburetoris jetted.

The purity of methanol can varydepending on where it is sourced andhow it is handled so some supplierscertify the purity of their methanol rac-ing fuel to guarantee consistent per-formance. Methanol is generally soldin sealed steel containers and shouldbe kept in sealed steel containers forsafety purposes. Methanol is corrosiveso it requires stainless steel fuel linesand a fuel tank with a methanol-com-patible bladder. Methanol is also toxic(it will kill you if you drink it) and pro-duces nasty exhaust fumes.

Pure methanol burns with a clearflame, making fires difficult to detectwhen fuel is spilled in an engine com-partment, a pit area or as a result of acrash. Blending gasoline withmethanol (M85 which is 85% methanoland 15% gasoline) creates a safer fuelbecause the gasoline makes the flamesvisible.

Some say methanol may eventuallybe phased out or made illegal by theEPA due to its toxic nature. Others saythe small amount of methanol fuel thatis used for racing has no significantimpact on air quality at or near racetracks, so there is no reason for the

EPA to go after it. Even so, others sayethanol is a “greener” option tomethanol and may eventually replaceit as the alcohol of choice for racingvenues that allow alcohol fuels.

Critics sayethanol uses food crops that should beused for food rather than fuel. Buthigher crop prices help support Amer-ican farmers.

Ethanol is mostly made from corn,though it can also be made fromsugar beets, potatoes or just aboutany plant that contains sugars orstarch. It is made by fermentingsugar with yeast, then cooking anddistilling the mash to separate the

ethanol from the water vapor.Ethanol is the same kind of alcohol

that goes into alcoholic beverages, so itisn’t inherently poisonous (in limitedquantities). But you can’t drinkethanol racing fuel because federal lawrequires the fuel to be “denatured”with gasoline or other chemicals so itcannot be consumed.

As mentioned earlier in this article,pump gas that contains up to 10%ethanol (E10) is commonly available inmany areas of the country, and E15blends have recently been approvedby the EPA for use in newer vehicles.E85 is another blend that is availablefor flex-fuel vehicles (but should NOTbe used in ordinary vehicles becauseof the richer fuel mixture that E85 re-quires).

Pump E85 is commonly used as a“poor man’s” racing fuel, but the per-centage of ethanol in pump E85 canvary quite a bit depending on the timeof year and the blend provided by thedistributor. For this reason, a numberof companies have introduced E85 andE90 racing fuels that are blended toexact specifications. The packaged E85race fuel costs more than pump E85but is a far more consistent and reli-

able product. Depending on the otheradditives in the product, it may alsodeliver up to 5% more power over atypical pump E85.

Adding ethanol to gasoline booststhe fuel’s octane rating. The improve-ment depends on the blend and the oc-tane rating of the base gasoline towhich the ethanol is added. Straightethanol has an octane rating of 130(RON), 102 (MON) and a pump AKIrating of 116. Ethanol racing fuels,which are typically available as eitherE85 (85% ethanol) or E90 (90%ethanol) blends with gasoline, carryoctane ratings of 110 to 116 dependingon the other ingredients in the fuel.

Ethanol contains about 84,600BTUs/gallon, which is about 27% lessthan gasoline, but about 30% morethan methanol. Consequently, a raceengine converted from methanol toethanol typically uses less fuel (30 to40% less) to make the same level ofpower. As an added benefit, the engineruns cooler and reduces the risk ofoverheating.

As a race fuel, ethanol is a cleanburning fuel that leaves few depositsin the combustion chamber or on thepistons. It is also non-corrosive to

metal but can attack some plastics sofuel system components have to be al-cohol compatible.

Ethanol is harder to ignite thanmethanol or gasoline, so it takes afairly robust ignition system and a hotspark for reliable ignition. Ethanol canalso handle a few additional degrees ofspark advance compared to gasolinebecause it burns slower than gasoline.Ethanol also likes colder spark plugsas a rule, and a somewhat wider sparkgap (.040 inches or more).

The air/fuel mixture for maximumpower with ethanol can be as rich as6.5 to one, and engine builders whohave had experience optimizing en-gines for ethanol say a compressionratio of 14.2 to 1 works best with E85and E90 racing fuels.

NitroNitromethane is the top dog of allracing fuels. It powers funny cars andTop Fuel dragsters. What makes itking of the hill is the fact that it con-tains twice as much oxygen asmethanol so it can be used with ex-tremely rich air/fuel mixtures. It onlytakes about 1.7 pounds of air to burnone pound of nitromethane.

The chemical formula for ni-tromethane is CH3NO2. The high oxy-gen allows the carbon and hydrogento burn with little or no additionaloxygen needed. Nitro contains fewerBTUs per gallon than gasoline ormethanol (only 47,000 BTUs/gallon),but because the air/fuel mixture canbe run so rich, the total energy pro-duced is far greater and can multiplyan engine’s power output up to 2.5Xor more depending on the fuel blend.

Nitromethane is usually mixedwith methanol alcohol, and the result-ing percentage of each fuel in theblend determines the fuel’s perform-ance properties. More nitro meansmore power. Track rules often limitthe amount of nitro that can beblended with methane in variousclasses.

Nitro has some drawbacks, how-ever. One is that it is very expensive(up to $80 per gallon). Another is thatit produces nitric acid in the exhaustso the driver and engine tuner have towear a respirator for protection whilethe engine is running. The fuel alsoburns slower than gasoline, whichmeans the fuel is still burning when itexits the exhaust pipes. This producesa lot of popping and flames but it canalso be hard on the exhaust valves. ■


ProCar Associates in Akron, OH, re-cently took on a classic HEMI buildand made it into a one-of-a-kind mill.They did the complete car, which tookR&D work and some special compo-nents, then it was run on the chassisand engine dyno for final tuning.

The engine was built by anothershop out west originally and had some“issues,” so when Pro Car got it theyhad to do a complete rebuild. It was acarbureted engine when it came in butthey converted it to Hillborn injectionwith a FAST EFI. The cams were tunedand degreed and valves lapped as itwas ready for its first pulls.

Chuck Wright, also a masterwelder, fabricated a very slick intakefor the HEMI as well. It took ChrisWright and his crew about 12-14 pullsto finally get the numbers they wantedto see. But the final outcome lookedand performed like a work of art.

“Our engine dyno allows us to per-form steady state tuning through therpm ranges. For the Hemi engine, Iwould hold the it at 1,500, 2,000, 3,000 -6,000 rpm to do the fuel curve and tim-ing,” says Chris. “Knowing our dyno isrepeatable to .1% and being able to per-form steady state tuning gives us theability to optimize the fuel and timingtables. When I work in the timing tableI watch torque so as I change the tim-ing I can see if torque increased or de-creased. This way I can get maximumtorque at minimum spark advance.”

Once they completed the steadystate tuning of the engine they per-formed a few more pulls where littleadjustments were made. Chris says hemade at least a dozen pulls, and the en-gine made a whopping 715 horse-power at 6,000 rpm.

Once the engine was put in the car,Chris only needed to make minor ad-justments to the fuel and timing ontheir chassis dyno. “Having an enginedyno setup like ours sped up thewhole process of tuning,” he says.

The owner of the engine lives in De-troit and it ultimately ended up in this1968 Plymouth Road Runner. Not abad ride for the motor city, we think. ■
