Engineered Aquatic Filter Barrier Systems
CFD Modeling of Rectangular Cartridge & Array
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Design Thoughts
• Why limit ourselves to 7 ft long cartridges?
• This necessitates using too many cartridges and consequently going too deep into intake bay potential poor flushing and flow distribution issues
• We want cartridges to be as exposed to East River currents as possible
• Intake bay is 30 ft wide so lets use it

Use 10 Foot Long Cartridge
PRO’s
• Will still leave enough room for piping and support.
• Reduces number of cartridges from 3 to 21/2 for station test & 12 to 10 for full plant operation
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
PRO’s & CON’s
CON’s
• Hard to move on 8 ft wide truck
• Unwieldy
• Fabric comes in 7 ft wide rolls
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Solution
• Make 2 x 5 ft long sections and join together on site to form 10 ft cartridge
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Proposed Cartridge
• 2 x 5 ft long sections
• 20.5 ft high
• 1 ft wide
• Fabric on both sides

10 Foot Cartridge Array
STATION TEST
• Area required for station test = 812 ft2
• Cart. surf area = 10’ x 20.5’ x 2 = 410 ft2
• # cartridges required = 2.5
• Allows 26% extra
• Effective flow rate = 7.5 gpm/ft2
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
10 Foot Cartridge Array
FULL PLANT OPERATION
• Area required = 3000 ft2
• Cart. surf area = 10’ x 20.5’ x 2 = 410 ft2
• # cartridges required = 7.3 use 10
• Allows 37% extra
• Effective flow rate = 6.5 gpm/ft2

CFD Modeling of Flow Distribution
• Aim is to get <25% variation across fabric
• Design flow = 10 gpm/ft2 = 0.0067 m/s
• 25% = 0.0017 m/s
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Test 1
• 4” diameter pipes
• 1 ft center/center spacing from middle of cartridge
• Uniform approach flow at 0.0067 m/s
• Examine flow pattern at width of 1 ft, 1.5 ft and 2 ft
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Model Setup
1 ft
5 ft0.0067 m/s
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Test 1 Results
• 1 ft width is borderline
• 1.5 ft width is good
• 2 ft gained little over 1.5 ft
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Array Test 1
• 0.15 ft/s approach velocity
• Cartridges 1 ft apart
• 10’ cartridges
• 1.5’ wide
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Array Test 2
• 1 ft/s approach velocity
• Cartridges 1 ft apart
• 10’ cartridges
• 1.5’ wide
Gunderboom, Inc. – Reliant Astoria AFB – Progress Review Meeting – July 9, 2003 – Seattle, WA
Array Test Conclusions
• 10 gpm/ft2 = 0.022 ft/s velocity through fabric
• With this low a velocity a 1’ cartridge separation is more than adequate
• If greater separation is required it will be because of other factors and not cartridge-cartridge flow interference

Other Thoughts
• May want to design guide rail structure to be streamlined
