Walking on sunshine!

It is said that the sun is a source of life.

Nature gave life to BOEN’s products.

A natural source. Our raw materials

are manufactured with respect for

their origins. Nature. Born from the

Legacy4

The history of BOEN is a story ofpeople, loyal and hard-workingpeople with real drive and a love ofnature, which dates back to the 17thcentury. As early as 1641, there weretwo saws in operation at the BOENwaterfall on the Topdals river nearKristiansand, in the south of Norway.

For over 350 years, the people atBOEN have manufactured timberand in all those years, quality hasremained the essential pointbehind all their labours.

The history of BOEN is also a historyof invention and innovation. From amill to a saw mill. From farming tothe manufacture of hardwoodflooring. Over the centuries, thepeople at BOEN have invested theirtime and efforts into movingforward, finding the best solutions, making the best products and at theturn of the centuries, one basicprinciple has remained at the core ofBOEN’s culture and history; respect

for nature’s resources. The rawmaterials have always been and re-main the key to BOEN’s exsistence.

Out into the worldDuring the 1970’s, BOEN beganexporting their production concept, and among those interested wasTh. Höhns KG GmbH, in Germany. The owners of BOEN took over thiscompany in 1976. Moreover, the twocompanies had a commonphilosophy and shared the samevalues; respect for nature, thoroughness, quality, innovationand expertise. The acquisition wasstrategically important for anumber of reasons. Together, BOENand Höhns were able to establishone of the most modern productionlines for multi-layer hardwoodflooring in Europe. In addition,Mölln had a central location inrelation to important ports inGermany and Holland and wasclose to the central markets ofEurope – the road to the worldmarkets was now much closer forBOEN and Höhns products.BOEN and Höhns have worked sideby side on the global flooringmarket since then.

The acquisition of Dominga inLithuania in 1998 allowed BOEN todevelop its production operations in

“There has been asaw mill inoperation at BOENfor over 350 years.”

“Even by the start ofthe 18th century,BOEN was already aprominent saw-millin Norway.”

an increasingly challenging market.Dominga is recognised as a qualitysaw mill and manufacturer withadvanced production lines andemployees with high levels ofexpertise within the business.

BOEN and Höhns are nowinternational players in the multi-layer hardwood flooring market. Our products are sold in more than40 countries on 4 continents. Inaddition to production sites inNorway, Lithuania and Germany,BOEN has sales offices in Norway,Germany, Denmark, Belgium,Austria, France, Italy and the USA.

This increased internationaloperation has necessitated thechange to an even morestreamlined service. The BOENGroup has therefore decided tobring all marketing activites underone brand name – BOEN.

A hardwood floor is more than justa floor. It is alive and should last alife-time. BOEN’s floors aredesigned to appeal to one’s estheticsenses, whether in a home, acathedral, an office or sports-hall.They are designed for movement –designed to move.

Jiffy International is a subsidiarywithin the BOEN company. Jiffyproduces peat pots and peatbriquettes which are used to plantmore than 100 million trees peryear – throughout the world. Withthese products, we can make acontribution to new forestation. We are sowing more than we reap.Jiffy’s products contribute to re-forestation 100 times greater thanBOEN’s annual consumption of raw materials.

BOEN’s production methods arenoted for their quality and excellentutilization of resources:

• The timber is quickly transportedto the saw mill and cut, so that thedrying process can start as quicklyas possible thereby avoidingdiscolouration.

• All raw materials are carefullydried in the open air for severalmonths before they are sent to the

Wood has been used for flooring forover 3000 years. In Scandinavia, since time immemorial, wood hasbeen the most important buildingmaterial. In the early Middle Ages,wood-based building styles spreadto different regions which hadconnections with each other, via theVikings’ Baltic trade routes.Scandinavia has a long, vigoroustradition within the manufactureand sale of wood products. As asupplier of wood products since1641, BOEN has played a role in thisScandinavian tradition.

Respect for natureBOEN admits to having an ethicaldilemma with regards to themanufacture and sale of productsfrom forests threatened witheradiction. That is why we havecontinual dialogue withenvironmental protectionauthorities and organizations.BOEN has now developed a clearpolicy of only manufacturing

Quality is one of BOEN’s mainvalues, the key to their philosophyand it forms the basis for allprocessing of raw materials, through production and finallycustomer service. BOEN’s conceptfor high quality is manifested bythe unification of traditionalNorwegian technology, Lithuaniandiligence and German efficiency.

Since the 1970’s, when BOENacquired ownership of Höhns, wehave achieved a renowned name forour products within the profes-sional hardwood flooring segment. For several decades now, Höhns’products have been associated withquality floors. It has been atradition in southern and centralEurope to have professionals to layhardwood flooring. These are crafts-men who make stringent demandson quality and functionality. We atBOEN have always recognised theimportance of their experience andmaintain close contact with them.Through close dialogue and

feedback, they can help us achievean ongoing process of improvementfor our products.

BOEN’s products are subjected to anextremely strict quality controlwhich applies to the entireproduction process, right up to itsdelivery at project site or home.

We dedicate our utmost attentionto the stability of the total floorconstruction and the tongue-and-groove profiling. Highest precision, razor sharp edges and perfectlinkage of the hardwood elementscome from the productionprocedure ConneXPress whereproduction lines were designedspecifically for this purpose.Constant supervision guaranteesextraordinary dimensional stabilityand consistently high quality. Stability44

BOEN Stability

Wood is a hygroscopic natural product; it absorbs the humidityof the air and emits it. It adapts its internal humidity contentto the currently prevailing environmental humidity.

“Wood is a livingmaterial. It absorbshumidity and emits it.”

The target of the developmentof our parquet floorings is toreduce the hygroscopic forces andthe performance of the wood to aminimum. Admittedly, we cannoteliminate those effects completely. But we can reduce them to aminimum. How do we achieve this?

The exactly dimensioned three-layer structure of our parquetplanks which are made up of anunderlay, an intermediate layer andan exotic woods layer will cancelout the natural effects by draw andcounterdraw. The carefully chosenwidths of the planks of 139 mm willreduce the swelling andcontractions considerably.

Sometimes fewer is more. This also applies to our ship planks -especially if the flooring is exposedto excessive tension and load.

Instead of the common 3 strips perplank we only use 2 strips. This way,the narrow planks are not only

more stable. The surface look ismore harmonic. One strip less has its advantages.

You can relive again and again thatBoen parquet floorings which arestable will outlast for generations.

Surfaces

fYou would not only like to see the wood but also feel it?Its warmth? Its grain? We have the solution!

Sealing - Protect Ultra For highly frequented surfaces,a perfect sealing is an importantaspect. The penetration of dust, dirt and humidity is prevented by ahighly abrasion-resistant, factory-made sealing with Protect Ultra. The care is considerably reducedwhereas the lifetime and thedurability of the parquet are beingincreased. In a crystal clear way, thesealing guarantees an uncloudedsight on the natural color of thewood. By the way, Protect Ultra isalmost free from solvents andformaldehyde.

EcolineThe oil-treated parquet. Ecoline is a product which is also deemed“good” by the magazine Ökotest. The result of the special productionprocess is a natural silky surface. The substances of content of theoils used for Boen mostly naturalproducts are important to allergicpersons: sunflower oil, soy bean oil, carnauba wax and componentsbased on beeswax. The surface iswater-repellent, sensitive to dirt,easy-to-clean, smear-resistant andresistant against stains. Do youhave any more questions?

BOEN conneXProcess

Taking a closer look, some hardwood flooring really appears tobe from yesterday; Uneven edges, which appear as uglyswelling all over the floor, messy joints, edges and seams. This isbefore the wood has even started to expand and contract.

conneXProcess

In the past the tongue and grooveused to be milled first beforetreating the surface; we now do theopposite. Firstly, we treat the surfaceusing finish or oil, and then we millthe tongue and groove. The millingtechnique we employ is calledConneXProcess – an optimal processwhich produces perfect joints.

ConneXProcess ensures that theedges of each board are completelystraight and that the finished floorwill have no visible joints. Having aprecise tongue and groove joint isalso crucial for rapid and secureinstallation.

ConneXProcess has been introducedfor all of our products: single strip,2-strip, planks and BOEN’s patentedsports flooring.

Completely straight edgesgive a precise fit.

Installation techniques forvarying requirementsLaying a floating floor is the mostcommon method employed inprivate houses and flats, althoughnailing or gluing the floor to thesub-floor are also good alternatives. In public buildings (hotels, airports, offices, etc.) we recommend thatthe floor should be glued to thesub-floor.

Hardwood floors which have beenglued to the sub-floor is extremelystable and provides far greaterflexibility when using alternativefurnishing solutions. Floating floorsmust be allowed to move freelywithout having any fixedattachments.

Our 14mm, 15mm and 21mmproducts may all be glued down, even though they are usuallyinstalled as floating floors. 23mmflooring should be nailed to joists orsoftwood battens. Our 10mm and12mm products should generally beglued to the sub-floor but they canalso be nailed down if required.
