3.1STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING
Alaskan Way viaduct.
ALASKAN WAY VIADUCT.
(SEATTLE, USA).
Object:
• Structural Evaluation and Retrofit of the Viaduct.
Relevant Data:
• Constructed in the 1950s, the viaduct is a vital local and
regional transportation link. Studies in the 1990s showed
that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life. The
2001 Nisqually earthquake further damaged the viaduct.
• The viaduct's downtown waterfront section will be
replaced with a bored tunnel beneath downtown
Seattle. The tunnel cause more settlement on the viaduct.
• Services: Structural assessment and design of retrofit
according to AASHTO.
• Non-linear analysis was necessary for an adequate
structural evaluation, taking into account existing and
future settlements, dead loads and live loads.
• Date: 2012-2016.
