PROJECT-BASEDCURRICULUMThe Mines ME program has four project -based courses in the second and third years that support design experiences in the f irst and senior years. The courses integrate design concepts and ME applied skills in programming, machining, GD&T and inst rumentat ion. These experiences prepare students for their year-long mult id iscip linary senior design course, which provides project experiences from indust ry, the community and nat ional compet it ions.

OPPORTUNITIES IN

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

BIOMECHANICSBiomechanics is the applicat ion of t rad it ional mechanical engineering concepts to human mot ion. Our facult y conduct research and teach classes in d iscip lines such as computat ional b iomechanics, musculoskeletal b iomechanics, and modeling and simulat ion of human movement , w ith a focus on immersive, hands-on experience.

ROBOTICS & AUTOMATIONW ith d iverse applicat ions in areas such as surgery, human movement , manufacturing, and defense, robot ics and automat ion are prevalent in our lives. MEs working in this f ield are responsib le for physical design and feedback cont rol and rout inely collaborate w ith elect rical engineers and computer scient ists.

SOLID MECHANICS, MATERIALS, & MANUFACTURINGAdvanced materials and cut t ing-edge manufacturing processes are driving innovat ion in aircraft st ructures, b iological implants, nuclear energy containment , and bat tery technology, among other areas. MEs study process?st ructure?property interfaces on a range of length scales to develop novel solut ions to real-world indust rial problems.

THERMAL FLUID SYSTEMS

Mechanical engineers are essent ial cont ributors to energy technology indust ries. In the Thermal Fluid Systems d ivision, students part icipate in research and pursue careers in alternat ive fuels, fuel cells, st ructural energy eff iciency, smart grids, and clean energy processes. We work closely w ith researchers at the Nat ional Renewable Energy Laboratory.
