BackgroundThe Fly Navy Heritage Trust (FNHT) is thecharity behind Navy Wings, working topreserve Britain’s great naval aviationheritage. It relies on public donations tosupport its work in maintaining, presentingand flying an unrivalled collection of historicnaval aircraft. FNHT currently owns a smallfleet of historic naval aircraft which it hasbeen using to support the objectives aboveover a period of several years. Naval AviationLimited (NAL) is the organisation appointedby FNHT to operate and maintain theseaircraft. NAL receives funding for theseactivities through charitable donationsthrough FNHT. Additionally, NAL generatesrevenue through participation in air showsand through passenger flights operatingunder Safety Standards Acknowledgementand Consent (SSAC) regulations. In meetingits commitments, it operates a range ofAssociate aircraft, as well as those owned bythe Trust.

In the near future, the FNHT expects to begifted additional aircraft previously operatedby the Royal Navy Historic Flight (RNHF). Theformer RNHF aircraft were in the pastoperated and maintained according toMilitary Aviation Authority (MAA) regulations. However, they have since been removedfrom the MAA’s register and, in anticipationof the transfer of ownership, placed on theCivil Aviation Authority’s register. The intentis that NAL be tasked to operate andmaintain the aircraft under Permits to Fly onbehalf of the FNHT, once transfer completes.Accordingly, NAL has established itself as aBCAR A8-23/25 approved organisation.

Establishment of anEngineering TeamIn support of current and future activities,NAL is in the process of establishing anengineering team comprising of a team ofengineers specialising in historic navalaviation. They will be led by a Chief Engineerand a Continuing Airworthiness Manager, who have already been recruited. Theengineering team will be composed of 3

types of individual, as follows:

• Core team members. The core teamrecruited to support the CE and CAM willbe composed of up to 4 full time staff, which is judged sufficient to supportNAL’s normal level of tasking.

• Contractors. In recognition that NAL’stasking is highly variable, the organisationwill also draw upon temporary Contractorpersonnel for specialist support and toachieve sufficient surge capacity for timesof peak activity. Tasks may vary in sizefrom small single-day activities to largerprojects lasting weeks or months.

• Volunteers. Additionally, NAL has anenduring need for volunteers who arewilling to offer their time and expertisefree of charge. They will be compensatedfor Travel and Subsistence expenses.
