The Volvo Ocean Race is the pinnacle of ocean racing where extreme sailboats race in truly
extreme conditions. Every boat is relying on standard Volvo Penta engines to supply electricity,
fresh water, heating and propulsion. Engines, identical to the ones available for you, prove their
reliability in the the world’s longest and most demanding race.
EXTREME CONDITIONS.STANDARD ENGINES.

POWER FOR VOLVO OCEAN RACE – AND YOUThe VOR yachts uses a D1-30 as auxiliary
engine to produce electrical power for commu-
nication equipment, broadcasting, navigational
aids, light, etc. It is also supplies the crews with
all their fresh water and powers the canting
keel – essential for optimum performance.
For propulsion in and out of harbors or in an
emergency, a D2-75 stands ready.
Needless to say, reliability is a top priority for
the crews. But also the low noise and vibra-
tions are appreciated.
With optional NMEA 2000 interface, engine data is available in a compatible chart plotter.
Freshwater cooling as standard on all engines.
High-capacity primer pump.
Rigid engine block for low noise.
Engine suspension with large damping volume boosts comfort.
High-capacity hot water outlet.
High-capacity fuel filter – essential for reliability.
Durable multi V-belt with user-friendly tensioner.
Effective intake silencer contributes to low engine noise.
115 A alternator with built-in charging sensor.
TORqUE FOR SAILBOATSThe D-series engines deliver high torque
also at low rpm. That means plenty of power
and quick response
to all commands. It
also provides power to
drive the most powerful
alternators in the
industry.
LOW RPM – HIGH COMFORTVolvo Penta D-series engines are rated at low
rpm, which means only 1,800–2,300 rpm at
cruising speed. This results in minimal vibra-
tions and low noise levels – which are further
reduced with the Saildrive.
EFFICIENT CHARGINGToday’s sailboats depend on electricity. All
D-series engines are as standard equipped
with high-capacity charging. The 115 A alter-
nator has a built-in charging sensor that gives
correct battery charging voltage. The D3 has a
180 A alternator. All models can have an extra,
engine-mounted, alternator.
RELIABLE STARTS – SIMPLE STOPSWith automatic pre-heating and the relay-
activated starter sole-
noid, starts are reliable
and fast. Electric stop
is standard on all
D-series engines.

D1 AND D2 DIESEL RANGEExtremely reliable, clean, quiet and with minimal vibrations, the D1
and D2 are the perfect companion aboard a sailboat. High torque
at low revs gives easy maneuvering and the 115 A alternator rapid
battery charging. Freshwater cooling is standard and adapted for
high-capacity hot water supply.
D1 series
The most compact engines in the range are
2- and 3-cylinder marine diesels available with
Saildrive or gearbox with straight or down-
angled shaft.
D2 series
4-cylinder marine diesels with turbo and after-
cooler for the D2-75. Saildrive or gearbox with
straight or down-angled shaft.

Controls, instruments, displays and the engine all communicate over the same network. This enables smart features such as trip computer, engine protection and engine data in a chart plotter. Table on page 11.
eVc – electronic Vessel control
EVC is Volvo Penta’s electronic platform with
radically reduced wiring and heavy duty marine
connectors. EVC gives greatly improved reli-
ability and new functionality:
• Continuous monitoring and protection of
engine and transmission.
• Greatly improved reliability and service life
compared to traditional electrical system.
• Optional NMEA 2000 interface enables
engine data in a plotter.

ENGINE ACCESSORIES
SECURE RELIABILITYUnclean diesel, water or microorganisms in
the fuel can all cause your engine to stop or
fail to start. A pre-filter and a decontaminator
are efficient ways to secure safe functionality
and reliability the whole sailing season, and
seasons to come.
fuel pre-filter
Efficient pre-filters protect the engine from
water and particles. They are easy to inspect
and clean for high reliability.
Diesel fuel DecontaMinator
Diesel fuels often contain microorganisms that
can start to grow and clog up the fuel system.
The fuel decontaminator solves this problem
permanently.
lubrication, oil anD coolant
Developed to meet the specific demands of
Volvo Penta marine engines and transmissions.
These products work perfectly in all operating
temperatures and maintain their qualities even
during long periods without use.
less Drag
The fact that a Volvo Penta folding propeller
offers up to 1.5 knots higher speed under sail
compared with a fixed propeller adds greatly
to your sailing pleasure.
More poWer
But also when cruising under engine power,
the high thrust makes them stand out from
the competition. The patented elliptical blades
provide efficient thrust, even in reverse. The
unique blade profile also provides safe opening
when reversing.
patenteD profile
The patented elliptical profile (high skew)
of the propeller blades ensures effective,
low-noise operation with minimal vibrations
and no cavitation.
special alloy
Since 2003, all Volvo Penta folding propellers
are made of a specially developed, nickel-
aluminum-bronze alloy (nibral) to minimize
corrosion and marine growth.
Propeller range table on page 11.
MAINTAIN POWERFUL CHARGINGA sailboat often uses its engine only for short
periods, but still consumes a lot of electricity.
For increased charging capacity, there are opti-
mized solutions for all engines in the range.
extra alternator
Volvo Penta engines have alternators that
are perfectly matched to the torque of the
engine to provide extra charging without losing
maneuvering power. Upgrading with an extra
alternator will give high-capacity charging for
12 and 24 V systems.

The boats in the Volvo Ocean Race are racing
machines. 70 feet (21.5 m) long and with a
weight of only 14 tons, half of it in the keel. The
mainsail is 175 m2 and the largest spinnaker
an astonishing 500 m2. This means speed: up
to, and sometimes over, 40 knots! In October
2008, Ericson 4 recorded 596.6 nautical miles
in 24 hours. An average speed of 24.8 knots –
a world monohull record.
