Power and performance.MAN engines for vehicles.
From Rudolf Diesel to Common Rail Diesel. Rudolf Diesel would have wholeheartedly approved. The great
inventor, who developed the fi rst diesel engine through to series-
production maturity at MAN between 1893 and 1897, would be
amazed at MAN‘s present-day engines and the progress they
embody. MAN‘s engines for vehicles demonstrate competence
in every aspect of technical progress: power ratings that set
standards; innovative engineering such as Common Rail injection
which points the way as regards dynamics and economy; the
latest technology to guarantee compliance with Euro 4; and the
proverbial reliability that continues to write new chapters in the
success story of MAN engines.
The best thing to do is to experience progress for yourself. Take
a look at MAN‘s diesel and gas engines for trucks and buses and
enjoy the additional input from our comprehensive advisory and
other services. If you have something big to move, just trust MAN.

Every successful vehicle is driven by a successful engine.
MAN engines – innovation and reliability.
For coaches, buses or trucks, from light to heavy: with an MAN
engine inside you‘ve got more going for you. Take advantage of
the power and dynamics of our D08 engine that drive our TGL
and TGM trucks. Or feel the thrill of the power from our D20/D26
engines. Both engine ranges will of course get your vehicles
moving too. Equipped with Common Rail injection, four-valve
technology and exhaust-gas recirculation, all MAN engines have
one thing in common: they display superb power development,
economy and environmental compatibility. In other words that
means high effi ciency. All Euro 4 engines are available with on-
board diagnosis (OBD1) as required by law.

D08 Common Rail: Today driving is so economical.
In-line power.
Four and six cylinders, 110 to 240 kW – or D08 for short.
Whichever engine from this range you look at, you‘ll discover
new top performance. The EDC7 electronic control system that
supplies the data for the Common Rail injection, ensures more
effi ciency, a higher torque and a higher power output. Almost all
engines feature two-stage supercharging; only the 110 and
176 kW engines for trucks have one-stage charging. The most
powerful models have a wastegate on the turbocharger. All
engines have the EVB (exhaust valve brake) as a series feature:
it provides high brake power, protects the service brake, saves
wear, cuts the running costs and provides extra safety.
Coming clean.
One attractive aspect of the engines is the extremely low pollutant
emissions to Euro 4. The D08 engines are not only fascinating as
far as power, economy and environmental compatibility are
concerned, but discreetly quiet as well. Their compact but robust
design will win you over too.

D20/D26 Common Rail: Putting innovation in motion.
Power to move big vehicles.
The latest chapter on future-orientated diesel engines is entitled
D20/D26. This is the most modern engine range in Europe with
common-rail injection, four-valve technology, exhaust-gas
turbocharging, air/air intercooling and cooled external exhaust-
gas recirculation and the EVB engine brake. Outstanding in its
power and quietness, environmental compatibility, effi ciency and
economy, these six-cylinder units put considerably more force
behind your success. The D20/D26 engines get more power out
of the fuel and consume approx. 5 % less diesel. They‘re low on
weight too, about 100 kg lighter than their D28 predecessors. On
the exhaust front they are lastingly cleaner than Euro 4 requires,
and in terms of noise they are so quiet that you hardly notice them.
A whole series of typical qualities go to show how reliable the
D20/D26 engines are:
n Extremely rigid crankcase made of special GJV 450 cast iron
n One-piece cylinder head with cast-on intake pipe, integrated
(overhead) camshaft and easy-action roller rocker arms
n Compact fuel and oil supply modules
n Separate coolant and lube oil supply to crankcase and cylin-
der head; this makes it possible to use a single cylinder head
gasket for all cylinders without coolant and lube-oil passages.
n etc. etc.
Making light of things.
Sometimes more is achieved if certain things are dispensed with:
the D20/D26 comes with about 25 % fewer parts than its
predecessor, the D28. This makes it some 100 kg lighter, and its
weight-to-power ratio is accordingly higher. It also has fewer
sealing points. As a result the D20/D26 range is the clear leader in
terms of service life and reliability. Built for around 1.5 million km,
it outclasses the D28 by about 50 %.
Fewer services.
In the D20/D26 “maintenance-friendly“ doesn‘t mean just easy
access to service points but extremely long service intervals too.
The D20/D26 can cover up to 120,000 km before the next service
is due. That gives you plenty of time to leave competitors
standing.

D20 power in the horizontal.
Engines for underfl oor installation
MAN offers several engines from the D20 range as horizontal
versions too for installation under the fl oor of buses. Their ratings
range from 199 to 316 kW.
All that gas.
MAN offers the natural-gas engine for scheduled-service buses
in two variants: a 12 l induction engine with 3-way catalyst and
rating of 180 kW, and a 12.8 l lean-mix turbocharged unit with
intercooling and 228 kW specially designed for powering articula-
ted buses. As in petrol engines, in natural-gas engines the power
output is controlled by a butterfl y valve and combustion is initiated
via sparkplugs. The gas tanks are mounted on the roof of the
vehicle. MAN also has a 12.8 l liquefi ed-gas engine to offer, the
G28. An induction engine with 3-way catalyst, it has an enticingly
high torque and supplies 200 kW.
Today the emissions from MAN gas engines are already well
below the limits stipulated by the Euro 5 standard and the even
stricter EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle). Their
noise emissions are low too.

A clean break for the future.
Progress goes on.
Diesel exhaust emissions are becoming cleaner and cleaner. The
Euro 4 limits – in force since October 2005 – brought another
major reduction in pollutant emissions. Euro 5 will be following in
October 2008 – another great step towards a clean environment.
MAN provides innovative exhaust-gas technologies that both
meet future requirements and are perfectly tailored to customers‘
requirements.
EGR and MAN PM-KAT®.
With the system consisting of Common Rail injection, cooled
exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) and the MAN PM-KAT® parti-
culate fi lter MAN has a technically and economically convincing
solution for Euro 4. Cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR)
makes it possible to reduce the proportion of oxides of nitrogen
(NOx) to extremely low levels inside the engine. To comply with
the particulate limits the PM-KAT® is used. This is a maintenance-
free particle trap system in the special-steel silencer that works
without clogging and needs no additional agent. The PM-KAT®
eliminates an above-average share of the smallest particles; its
separation rate is about 70 %.
Clean advantages with MAN PM-KAT®
n Reliable, maintenance-free system that works without
clogging
n No restrictions on space for other components
n Up to 150 kg weight advantage on other exhaust-gas
cleaning systems
n Above-average elimination of the smallest particles
n No dependence on additional agents
n No additional heating needed at low ambient temperatures

MAN AdBlue® .
To comply with Euro 5 even today MAN offers SCR (Selective
Catalytic Reduction) technology under the name of MAN AdBlue®.
In this process the oxides of nitrogen are reduced in a down-
stream ceramic catalyst, the SCR CAT. The process needs the
reducing agent AdBlue®, a non-toxic, odourless urea solution.
It is sprayed into the fl ow of exhaust gas and then converts the
oxides of nitrogen into water vapour and elementary nitrogen –
a natural constituent of the air – in the catalyst. This technology
achieves NOx reduction rates of over 80 %.
CRTec® particulate fi lter.
For use in buses MAN can as an option also equip various
engines with the CRTec® (Continuously Regenerating Trap)
particulate fi lter, which reduces the particulate emission to the
Euro 4 levels. This fi lter system is electronically controlled and
self-regenerating, but not maintenance-free. To ensure that
the necessary exhaust-gas temperatures are available for an
optimum regeneration process, the CRTec® fi lter is linked to the
EDC7 engine electronics. A display tells the driver when the fi lter
needs maintenance.

One of the few alternative fuels to have met with acceptance
today is natural gas. If the mobile fuel used is gas, the engine
emissions achieved are excellent. The problems are encountered
in the higher price of the vehicle and the build-up of a national
supply network. Today the emissions from the natural-gas and
liquefi ed-gas engines (CNG, LPG) developed by MAN are already
below those laid down by the Euro 5 and EEV standards. These
full carbon winding. Depending on vehicle deployment, this en-
sures an operating range of 150 to 250 km.
The MAN hydrogen engine emits exhaust gases with pollutants
well below the limits stipulated by the EU up to Euro 5 and consi-
derably betters even the EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly
Vehicle), currently the strictest exhaust-gas standard introduced
to date.
Gas engines to speed up progress.
Hydrogen has a future.
Hydrogen meets the requirements for a mobile fuel of the future.
It could put an end to the dependence on fossil fuels and to the
global warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions. We are
currently working hard on further development of this hydrogen
technology with a view to introducing it into series production in
due course. It has been successfully proved that hydrogen can be
used in MAN buses. The vehicles are powered by a 12.8 l engine
rated at 150 kW and equipped with a blow-in and spark injection
system. The gaseous hydrogen is carried in a gas storage system
on the roof of the vehicle. This consists of aluminium tanks with

are 6-cylinder horizontal in-line engines which are available as
naturally aspirated units with 3-way catalyst (lambda = 1) or as
supercharged and intercooled lean-mix engines (lambda = 1.7).
They develop power outputs of 180 to 228 kW. Because of
their soft combustion the MAN gas engines also have low noise
emissions.
