two major phases. Due to crical safetyand security concerns and the rapidly

deteriorang facility at EMS, EHS and CFAHS, it was agreed that these issues were to be addressed

rst. This Bond measure will primarily focus on a new campus for grades 7-12 and the renovaon of

Englewood Middle School in preparaon for occupancy by Colorados Finest Alternave High School.

Providing new facilies and 21st Century Programming, will allow us to retain the majority of our

Englewood students and aract students from across the enre south metropolitan area. As stu-

dents enroll in Englewood Schools from other aendance areas, the State funding for each of these

students follows the student to Englewood.

As for the interior scope in progress, the

    underground electrical and plumbing are

complete. This has allowed concrete slab

on deck and slab on grade in the building

to be 75% complete. The remaining con-

crete will be poured in the coming weeks.

it will create the open and inving design intended here. Along

with these areas, the Fisher Auditorium remodel will begin shortly

aer school exits for the summer months with plans to be complete

when sta and students return in September.

The project is being managed on behalf of the school by CBRE and

the Design-Build team consists of MOA Architects and Saunders

Construcon. For more detailed informaon, including the latest

    Colorados FinestAlternave High SchoolConstrucon Update

Construcon connues to progress at the

    Colorados Finest Alternave High School

project. With the project design completedthis fall and a building permit in-hand,

construcon ocially got under way the

    day aer Christmas, 2012.

With the Middle School connuing to

operate on the north half of the building,

Haselden Construcon has taken over the

south half of the building and has steadily

    transformed the old classroom spaces

into new, 21st Century learning environ-

ments. Temporary parons separatethe middle school from the construcon

areas to minimize disrupon between the

    construcon project and the school.

New spaces on the south side include two

science classrooms, two science labs, a

new art room and a newmul-media

classroom space. The former library space

in the middle school has been completely

    converted into a new administraon

suite. The old locker rooms have been

    completely demolished and a newt-

    ness/weight room, with adjoining locker

room space, is being built. The old tech

arts building has been cleaned out to be

ed with new boilers and mechanical

equipment. Finally, the south gym is in

the midst of receiving a new re sprinkler

system and a completely new HVAC system.

    With summer fast approaching, this

south halfof the building is expected to

be complete by the end of May.

Over the summer months the construcon

team will complete nearly 60,000 square-

feet of renovaons in just 3 months. The

contractor teams will be working two

dierent shis, seven days a week and

are scheduled to complete the rst oor

classrooms in me for school in fall, 2013.

The second story classroom wing will be completed in early October, 2013, with the Cosmetology and

STEM spaces being the last phase, completed by November, 2013.

    ...CFAHS Update (connued)

The classroom renovaons will provide 21st

    century educaonal space and promote

    student-centered learning environments,

while keeping an openness which Colorados

Finest students and teachers have embraced

at their current facility. The school will also

feature a new entrance, located at the cor-ner of Chenango Ave & Delaware St, which

will provide more visibility and safer, easier

access from the primary parking lot. Once

the Colorados Finest students move in to

this building in January, 2015, they will be

leaving behind a cramped 30,000 square-

foot space and be expanding into a 98,000

square-foot space, with amenies that have

    been sorely lacking.

The new mechanical and electrical systemsbeing installed are far more ecient than

the outdated equipment currently in place.

These new systems put the project on pace

to be cered by the U.S. Green Building

Council as LEED Silver, which is an impressive

achievement for the school in its measure

of energy eciency and sustainable features.

The City of Englewood has agreed to give

    $100,000 to complete aesthec improve-

ments in both the north and south gyms.

This scope includes paral replacement and

re-nishing both gym oors, new paint,

new basketball goals, volleyball and bad-

    minton standards and addional moveable

    bleachers and seang. These improvements

will be completed over summer, 2013.

The project is being managed on behalf of

the school by CBRE and was designed by

    SlaterPaull Architects.

Instruconal Technologyin the Classroom and Beyond

    STEM in Englewood

Englewood Schools are quickly becoming known for their approach to STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Math) programs. Just this year, students from Englewood High School competed

successfully in programming and robocs compeons, and will be launching a near-space balloon

with scienc probes in May. Addionally, students from Colorados Finest Alternave High School

perform experiments with lasers, wind, pneumac and solar energies. Englewoods STEM lab was

the site of a naonal conference for STEM teachers, and a desnaon for visitors from across the

Front Range. In the 2013-14 school year, Clayton Elementary will partner with the Colorado School

of Mines to provide Englewood students with resources and instrucon. Englewood leadership is

commied to preparing Englewood students for the technical workplace of the 21st century.

    iPad, iThink, iLearn

Students at the Englewood Leadership Academy

have begun working at school and at homewith a school-issued iPad. Approximately 75

students and their four teachers are working

digitally 24/7with the iPad, as they use instruc-

Resources for LearningSta and students in Englewood Schools have access to

some of the best learning technologies anywhere in the

state. Englewood has a robust wireless network, ber-

    opcs-delivered bandwidth, and current computers.

The teaching sta in Englewood use laptop computers for

producvity and mobility, and Englewood supports

over 2,400 computers for 3,000 students, ensuring one

of the best computer-to-student raos in the state.

Addionally, sta can rely on LCD projectors for pre-

sentaons, and document cameras to project texts and

3D objects. Englewood sta members acknowledge

their level of support, with 85% of sta agreeing that

they have access to the technology tools they needs to

    teach to todays digital generaon.

onal applicaons and online resources to further their learning. The district pro-

vides heavy duty cases and internet ltering to focus students. Further, 100% of the

ELA parents have opted to have their child take the device home. Both students and

sta have agreed that the pilot has been successful and cant envision working with-

out the iPad. Watch for Englewood to expand the program in the coming school year.

    ...IT in Classroom (connued)

Systems UpgradesAny organizaon in the 21st century must increase IT responsibilies to account for the growing

role that digital technology has in our lives. Englewoods IT department has responded to these

challenges by connuing to improve our infrastructure. These improvements include: server virtu-

alizaon, higher capacity networking equipment, building out our WiFi network, and invesng in

ber opcs. These improvements support sta and students in their learning and in the classroom.

    Operaonal Eciencies

Englewoods IT department connues to demonstrate commitment to providing resources in a

scally responsible manner. Englewood is on track to save 100K/year in print shop costs through

the use in new technology. Also Englewood is on pace to save 75K/year in telecommunicaons

costs by building out our own private network. Englewood operates its own phone system and uses

federal programs such as E-Rate to drive down costs. Englewood will connue to explore new tech-

nologies to enhance its educaon system, while being responsible to the tax payer.

Englewood Shares our SuccessesEnglewood Schools is the frequent host to other educators, showing our stas creave use of

instruconal technology. Englewood has had visitors from across the Front Range, the state of

Colorado, the United States, and even India interested in our classroom pracces. Englewood sta

and students take the visits in stride, proud to share their experiences and let others learn from

Englewood educators. The outside visits provide an exchange of ideas and validate our teachers

    hard work.

    Monitoring District Progress

Acuity Assessment SystemThis year Englewood Schools had adopted a benchmarking assessment system in grades 3-10 to

monitor the progress of students towards end of year standards in Reading and Math, called Acuity.

Acuity measures how well students are meeng the end of the year standards three dierent mes

during the school year. Teachers then use this data to inform decisions regarding instrucon and to

meet the learning needs of students.

Professional Learning that Supports Improvement Plans

    Semester 1:

During the rst semester of the 2012-2013 school year, educators connued to focus on

the new instruconal model, Gradual Release of Responsibility. The enre teaching sta

completed a book study on the 3rd phase of gradual release, eecve student collaboraon. The book study was accompanied by invesgaon, discussion, and recorded exemplars

during one late start Monday each month.

    Semester 2:

In eort to connue expanding our understanding of the Data Team Process, the professional

learning for second semester focused on how to create common formave assessments

with the kick o on January 7, 2013. The second semester of learning provided teachers

with the opportunity to create a common formave assessment, receive feedback on the

assessments, and to watch a recorded Englewood Data Team in acon as they discussed

how they used common formave assessments to monitor the progress of their students

over the course of a unit.

    Late Start Mondays:

The district connues to provide content for one late start Monday each month. This

professional learning is always aligned to the district improvement plan, which is monitored

for the purposes of state accreditaon. The content of the other late start Mondays is

determined by building principals and the unique needs of sta idened in School Im-

    provement Plan.

Monitoring Student ProgressAs menoned, Englewood Schools is monitoring student progress toward end of year reading,

math, and wring standards. The charts on the following page compare each grade levels previous

years TCAP scores to the grade levels district benchmark assessment score. The data is organized

to be read in a straight horizontal line. Looking at the data in this way, you can analyze the average

achievement gains made by a grade level of students from last years TCAP test though the bench-

marks of this year and predict how students will perform on this years state assesssment.

    Academic Standards Update

Colorado Academic StandardsEnglewood Schools will begin full implementaon of the new Colorado Academic Standards during

    for the 2013-2014 school year.

Why Do We Need New Standards?

The world has changed. Employers expect more today than they did in the past from their

employees. Employers are expecng to hire employees who have the skills to help their

companies compete in the global marketplace and keep up with rapidly changing technolo-

gy. Todays employers need their sta to be able to acquire new skills quickly, work with less

supervision and idenfy sophiscated problems and make crucial decisions.

We cant successfully prepare students for college and careers unless we set the right ex-pectaons and goals. The Colorado Academic Standards are clear statements of what stu-

dents are expected to learn at each grade level to graduate prepared for a fast-moving,

    ever-changing and increasingly globally-connected world.

    How Were These Standards Developed?

The development process was research-based and fully inclusive of Colorados diverse com-

munies. Parcipaon from business leaders, teachers, parents, higher educaon represen-

taves and others helped ensure that a wealth of experience informed the creaon of our

new standards. The Colorado Academic Standards exemplify the mantra all students, all

standards; the development process created new standards for each of our ten content ar-eas: Colorado Arts Music, Visual Arts, Theatre, Dance; Comprehensive Health and Physical

Educaon; Mathemacs; Reading, Wring and Communicang; Science; Social Studies and

World Languages. Colorado standards for mathemacs and reading, wring and communi-

cang incorporate the Common Core State Standards while maintaining the unique aspects

of the Colorado Academic Standards, including 21st century skills and prepared graduate

    competencies.
