Points to Ponder: “Anthem” Chapter 11 (pp. 94-97)   1. Describe the discovery Equality makes in this chapter. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Explain the following quotes in your own words, and discuss how they can be applied to your life. Quote: Explanation in my own words: How this could be applied to my life: “My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is in its own goal. It is its own purpose.” (95)

“I am a man. This miracle of me is mine to own and keep, and mine to guard, and mine to use, and mine to kneel before!” (95)

“I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is freedom.” (95-96)

“For the word must never be spoken, save by one’s choice and as a second thought.” (97)

3. What does Equality realize is the proper goal and purpose of his life? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. In what ways is “I” like a god? _____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. Reread the incident with the Saint of the Pyre. What was he trying to communicate to Equality? (pp. 49-50) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6. Refer back to question #5. Which literary technique is Ayn Rand employing by including this passage (and this character)?

*Adverbs*   Definition: An adverb (adv) modifies a verb, an adjective, another verb, or an entire clause or sentence. Adverbs usually answer one of the following questions:

- How? - When? - Where? - To what extent? - Why?

Examples: Draw a squiggly circle around each adverb and draw an arrow to the word it modifies.

1. The mayor lives alone in a downtown apartment [alone modifies the verb lives]

2. She has a very busy schedule. [very modifies the adjective busy]

3. The almost never takes a vacation. [almost modifies the adverb never]

4. Apparently, she doesn’t need one. [apparently modifies the entire sentence]

Conjunction adverbs, such as however, thus, and consequently, modify an entire sentence or clause while linking it to the preceding sentence or clause.

Example: Today’s weather will be beautiful. We, however, expect it to rain tomorrow.

Practice! Draw a squiggly circle around each adverb and draw an arrow to the word it describes.

1. Ms. Fittz’s post-it notes, colorful and sticky, are her favorite school supplies.

Practice! Directions: Fill in each blank with the appropriate adverb. Example: I ___________ come to school on time. {A: Always}

1. I ___________________ go to bed at 10 o’clock.

2. I have _______________ been out of the country.

3. I have been to Australia just ________________.

4. I ____________ brush my teeth before going to bed.

5. I was ______________ impressed by their Hunger Games tests.

6. I will study ________________ for my test tonight.

" Putting it all together: Identify the pronoun (P), noun (N), verb (draw a box), adjective (circle & arrow), and adverb (squiggly circle and arrow)

Ms. Fittz loves reading Anthem with her excellent honors students.
