Table IV, which presents the comparative analysis of the levels of calculated consumptionforpsychotropicsubstances,wasexpandedtoin-cluderelevantinformationontwosubstances,namelybuprenor-phineandmethylphenidate.5.In 2012 , the Board decided to modify the structure of its techni-cal publication on psychotropic substances by moving some informa-tiontotheannexes.TheBoardalsodecidedtoreducetheoverall volume of the printed part of the publication by including the annexes inaCD-ROM*attachedtotheprintedpartofthepublication.All information contained in the previous editions of the publication con-tinuestobe included inthepublication,although ina differentorder (see page iii). The quality of the analysis depends onthequalityofthedata provided.UseofsubstancesincludedinScheduleIofthe1971Conventionshouldbelimitedto scientific research and, in certain cases, for the manufacture of psychotropic substances in other schedules.TheisolateduseofsomesubstancesinScheduleIforthemanufactureofother substanceshasdeclinedinrecentyears.Manufacture of methylphenidate and its use for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactiv-ity disorder (ADHD) continued to increase worldwide. Global manufacture reached a new record, of over 63 tons, in 2012. Although the number of countries reporting manufacture of methylphe-nidate has increased in recent years, the United States of America remained the leading manu-facturer, accounting for almost 97 per cent of the total output. The United States also remained theleadinguserofmethylphenidatein2012.OutsidetheUnitedStates,themainusersof methylphenidatein2012were,indescendingorder,Canada,Germany,Spain,Switzerland,the Netherlands, Brazil,Sweden, Israel,SouthAfricaand Australia.Manufactureofamphetamines,whicharetheothercentralnervoussystemstimulantsin Schedule II of the 1971 Convention, increased further and attained a new record, of over 50 tons (3.4billiondefineddailydosesforstatisticalpurposes(S-DDD)),in2012.Thisdevelopmentis due mainly to a significant increase in the manufacture of amfetamine and dexamfetamine in the United States during the year. The United States remained the largest consumer of amphetamines in2012inabsoluteterms,aswellasintermsofpercapitaconsumption.Buprenorphine, an opioid analgesic listed in Schedule III of the 1971 Convention, has been increasingly used since the late 1990s in the treatment of pain and in substitution treatment for opioid addicts. Global manufacture of buprenorphine attained a new record of over 7 tons (919 mil-lion S-DDD) in 2012. Global calculated consumption of the substance has also continued to grow. TheUnitedStatesremainedtheleadinguserofbuprenorphinein2012,followedbyGermany, France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain (in descending order). As in previous years, over 60 countries reported importsofbuprenorphine. Atotalof35benzodiazepinesarecurrentlyunderinternationalcontrol.Ofthose,22are classifiedasanxiolytics,and12areclassifiedassedative-hypnoticsandareusedinmedical practiceforpre-medicationandtheinductionofgeneralanaesthesia.Clonazepamistheonly benzodiazepine that is used mainly as an anti-epileptic. Flunitrazepam, a sedative-hypnotic, is the onlybenzodiazepinethatislistedinScheduleIIIofthe1971Convention,whiletherestofthe benzodiazepinesarelistedinScheduleIV.In2012,19Governmentsreportedmanufactureof benzodiazepine-typeanxiolyticsand15Governmentsreportedmanufactureofbenzodiazepine-type sedative-hypnotics; total reported manufacture of both groups of benzodiazepines decreased in2012.Thisdecreasemaybeattributedtothefactthatonemajormanufacturingcountrydid notprovideitsdataonmanufactureofbenzodiazepinesfor2012totheBoard.Alprazolamand diazepamremained,inthatorder,themostmanufacturedpsychotropicsubstancesintermsof S-DDD.
