Essay title “The industrialization challenges of the LAC region in achieving the Sustainable
Development Goal 9 and an Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID)”.
The theme, elaborated on the challenges and actions within the region, should take into account:
o The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) # 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote
inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”.
o The Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) framework from UNIDO.
o One of UNIDO’s thematic areas
Creating shared prosperity
Advancing economic competitiveness
Safeguarding the environment

By submitting the essay for consideration, the candidate attests that:
o It is an original essay written by him/her
o The essay has not been submitted or published in the past
o The essay must be written by only one person (no co-authorship allowed)
Contestants may only send one essay which must be submitted by 00:00 CET (GMT+1), the 10
January 2016.
The essay, a digital copy of the passport, the candidate’s CV (with contact information) and the
attestation of authorship, must be sent to [email protected]
Conditions of contest
UNIDO LAC Bureau will only accept complete applications (essay, passport digital copy, CV and
attestation of authorship) electronically submitted to [email protected]
Participants whose contact information has changed during the course of the contest are responsible
for notifying the UNIDO LAC Bureau.
Winners are responsible for making a 30 minute presentation about their essays to present in
Vienna.
Winners are responsible for obtaining a visa if it is a requirement to travel to Vienna (being that
the case, UNIDO may issue an official support letter), for obtaining health insurance as well as for
covering any other expenses that accrue to the award (taxes, visa and passport fees, any
compensation in case of illness, etc.)
Winners will be individually contacted by UNIDO LAC Bureau.
UNIDO reserves the right to disqualify candidates who tamper with the process or breach the contest
criteria.
UNIDO staff, their immediate family members and staff from institutions sponsoring or associated
with the contest are not eligible to participate.
Decisions by the UNIDO LAC Bureau judges are final. Entrant agrees to comply with and be bound
by the decisions of the panel of judges on all matters associated with the contest.
UNIDO will pay for round-trip air transportation via the most direct and economical route.
UNIDO is not liable for any late or misrouted essays.
Participants allow UNIDO to use their names, photographs and essays for promotional and publicity
purposes.

1. I am not a student, can I participate in the contest?
Yes, as long as you were born in 1985 or after. In addition, you should be a national and resident of any
Latin American or Caribbean country.
2. What should the essay be about and where can I find more information about the topics?
The essay should have the title: “The industrialization challenges of the LAC region in achieving the
Sustainable Development Goal 9 and an Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID)”.
Elaborate on the challenges and actions within the LAC region, taking into account the following topics:
1. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) # 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and
sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”
2. The UNIDO Mandate: Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID)
3. One of UNIDO’s thematic areas (Creating shared prosperity or Advancing economic competitiveness or
Safeguarding the environment)
Please consider that the names of the thematic areas changed recently but the content is still the same:
“Poverty reduction through productive activities” changed to “Creating shared prosperity”
“Trade capacity building” changed to “Advancing economic competitiveness”
“Energy and environment” changed to “Safeguarding the environment”

3. How do I submit my essay?
UNIDO LAC Bureau will only accept complete applications: essay, digital passport copy, CV with
contact information (email, address and telephone/mobile phone) and the attestation of authorship
electronically submitted once to [email protected]. No hard copies are required.
4. Can I submit two essays?
Contestants may only send one essay. The essay must be written by only one person, co-authorship is not
permitted.
5. What is the Business report format?
The standard components are: Title page, Table of contents, Introduction, Body, Conclusions,
Recommendations and Bibliography. Please do not forget to cite your sources using Harvard or Oxford
reference style.
6. Does the word count (3,000 - 4,000 words) include the components of the Business report format?
The word count includes the Title page, Table of contents, Introduction, Body, Conclusions,
Recommendations and Bibliography. Keep in mind the limitations of the essay (min. 3000 – max. 4000
words).
7. Do I have to prove my English knowledge skills?
You don’t have to prove your English proficiency by sending a certificate. However, your high level skills
will be evaluated in the essay. The winners will present an oral presentation of the essay followed by a
Question and Answer session in English.
8. Where can I find the attestation of authorship?
You can download the attestation of authorship in the side bar of the UNIDO LAC essay webpage or here.
Print the attestation, sign it and finally send the scanned digital version via email along with the other
documents required.
9. How do I know if my essay was selected as one of the top 10?
The winners will be published at the UNIDO LAC webpage in the beginning of February 2016. The authors
of the best 3 essays will be individually contacted to start the arrangements for the trip to Austria.
10. Can you tell me more about the awards?
The 10 finalists will be individually contacted by UNIDO LAC Bureau to provide details about the 10 online
professional development courses (per person) granted by the International Commission On Workforce
Development. The Award certificate will be sent or hand over personally to the finalists. The 10 essays will
be published at the UNIDO LAC website.
The authors of the 3 best essays will win a trip to Vienna in economy class. UNIDO will pay for the round-
trip air transportation (the most direct via and economical route). They will visit the UNIDO Headquarters to
present the paper to UN Staff and the Diplomatic Corpus. In addition, an 800 Euro scholarship will be
delivered to each winner upon arrival. The winners will participate at an AIESEC workshop.
The UNIDO LAC Bureau will be responsible for providing accommodation in a hotel close to the UN
Headquarters in Vienna. Food and transportation costs during the trip as well as personal expenses shall be
borne by the winners.
It is important to highlight that the awards are non-transferable, cannot be redeemed for cash and cannot
be substituted for other awards.
11. Which are the travel-related requirements for my trip to Vienna?
Winners may need a visa for the trip to Austria. Should you need a visa please contact the closest Austrian
Embassy or Consulate with anticipation prior to your travel to inform yourself about the requirements for
your trip. Please consider that you are responsible for obtaining a visa if it is a requirement to travel to
Vienna (UNIDO may issue an official support letter if needed), for obtaining health insurance as well as for
covering any other expenses that accrue to the award (taxes, visa and passport fees, any compensation in
case of illness, etc.).
12. Is it mandatory to do a presentation if chosen as a winner?
If you are the author of one of the three best essays, then it is mandatory to do a 30 minute presentation
about your essay to present in Vienna. The audience will be UNIDO technical experts, academics and LAC
region diplomatic corpus.
Please note that the oral presentation must be performed in English and that the dress code is formal.
13. What happens if my essay is selected as a winner and I am not able to go to Vienna?
The winners cannot choose to obtain just a part of the awards.
The awards are non-transferable, cannot be redeemed for cash and cannot be substituted for other prizes.
14. Can I travel with a companion?
We do not encourage you to travel with a companion. However if you do so, he/she will have to bear all the
expenses of the trip. UNIDO will not facilitate any kind of assistance.
15. What is the weather like in Vienna?
Vienna has a typical continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. At the end of February-
beginning of March the weather might reach up to 10°C and drop below 1°C. It is very humid and cold, and
snow might fall. Please check the weather forecast in advance.
16. Whom do I contact if I have further questions?
