English I Pre-AP/GT

Literature-Based Research

Spring 2011

2

Project Purpose

Objectives (taken from KMAC)

Brainstorm, consult with others, decide upon a topic, and formulate a major research question

to address the major research topic

Formulate a plan for engaging in research on a complex, multi-faceted topic.

Follow the research plan to compile data from authoritative sources in a manner that identifies

the major issues and debates within the field of inquiry.

Organize information gathered from multiple sources to create a variety of graphics and forms

(e.g., notes, learning logs)

Paraphrase, summarize, quote, and accurately cite all researched information according to a

standard format (e.g., author, title, page number).

Modify the major research question as necessary to refocus the research plan.

Evaluate the relevance of information to the topic and determine the reliability, validity, and

accuracy of sources (including Internet sources) by examining their authority and objectivity.

Critique the research process at each step to implement changes as the need occurs and is

identified.

Organize and present evidence in support of a clear thesis statement and related claims.

Provides an analysis for the audience that reflects a logical progression of ideas and a clearly

stated point of view;.

Uses graphics and illustrations to help explain concepts where appropriate.

Uses a variety of evaluative tools (e.g., self-made rubrics, peer reviews, teacher and expert

evaluations) to examine the quality of the research.

Uses a style manual (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago) to document sources and format written

materials.

Produce a multimedia presentation with graphics, images, and sound that conveys a distinctive

point of view and appeals to a specific audience.

Assignment Overview

This assignment is a literature-based research project. Over the course of the next few weeks, you will

choose and read a novel from the provided list of approved titles, and you will research a topic related

to that novel. The final project will include a book talk for your chosen novel, a multi-textual production,

and an annotated bibliography of your sources. The following packet will provide you with important

information about this project, such as assignment requirements, due dates, and grading rubrics. Please

keep and use this throughout the project.

3

General Guidelines

Research can be a difficult process, so it is important that you keep up with the steps as we complete

them in class. You should make sure to meet important deadlines; if you fall behind or feel confused

about part of the process, you should make time to attend tutorials.

That being said, research does not have to be a miserable process. Make sure you pick a book that

contains a topic of interest to you. As you develop a research question, you should consider your own

curiosities and interests. Keeping up with the due dates, asking questions during class, and attending

tutorials will also help make this assignment much more manageable and enjoyable.

Absence policy:

In accordance with the KISD Grading and Reporting Guidelines, students who are aware of the due date

of an assignment before being absent are responsible for maintaining that due date. In other words, if a

student is absent the day before something is due, that student is still responsible for turning in the

work. The due dates for most of the assignments related to the research project are listed in this packet

so that students may stay on top of their work.

Resources:

Students who are not able to complete their assignments in the class time allotted may take advantage

of the following resources:

Reading Log Instructions and Requirements

You will be required to keep a record of your reading throughout this process. You will have a variety of

options for this. You may choose one of these options or use a combination.

OPTION 1: Annotation

For this option you may annotate in your copy of the novel. Annotations must be detailed and include

not only underlining and highlighting, but also marginal commentary.

OPTION 2: Double-Entry Journal

This is a form of two column notes where you can record your observations from the novel. In the first

column, record a quote or a summary of a selected passage; make sure to include page numbers. In the

second column, record your thoughts about your quote or summary. You should record at least 2 items

per chapter for this option.

OPTION 3: Chapter Notes

For this option, you will need to record notes for each chapter of the novel. You may format these notes

as reflective responses or chapter summaries. You may also format these as a list of quotes or

observations from each chapter. Each chapter will need to have notes.

10

Book Talk Instructions and Requirements

Since this is a literature-based research assignment, you will complete a book talk for your chosen novel.

This will be worth a major grade. The book talk should be three pages minimum and must be typed,

double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12, with one-inch margins. Your assignment must also

include the proper heading and MLA format. Please see the sample assignment provided in class for

formatting assistance.

Book talks must include:

Annotated Bibliographies

Definitions

A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation.

Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following:

Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.

Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?

Reflect: Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
