Dear Readers,I am delighted to present you with this school

year’s last issue of Imagine Magazine. This is

only our fourth issue so far, however the

advancements that we have made with the

magazine are amazing. We have doubled the

amount of pages since our debut issue at the

beginning of this school year and we have

managed to figure out the best way to proceed

with each new issue. Every issue we produce is better than the last,

as we learn from the mistakes we make,

reinforce the positive aspects of our production

and get better at noticing more and more things

that we could improve every time. I look

forward to working on our next issue; I hope

that you will look forward to reading it.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful and

From Mr & Mrs Lawlor

It seems like such a long time ago since both myself and Mrs Lawlor sat down and came up with the idea to start Pressgang club, to produce a magazine which could belong to the school community and provide a voice for our students.

We never expected so many students to join us in the beginning and along the way we have had to say goodbye to some while welcoming fresher faces into our team. We have been constantly amazed by the commitment and vision of students involved and each and every issue has really made the long nights worth the while! We could sit and thank each member seperatley but that would mean less pages of exciting content for you to read. Instead we would like to thank everyone that has made this years issues of Pressgang possible from teachers, administrative staff, parents and naturally the students.

Pressgang TV is rapidly developing into an exciting venture with students more recently working on a video to cover the IB Graduation Ball and our Uganda insight. Hopefully these will both be ready for the End of this year.

In September Pressgang magazine will continue but both Mrs Lawlor and I feel that the students

of Pressgang is for it to be student lead and

having watched the progress made by our

Pressgang members in Senior school we feel

that it is now time for them to continue our

successes into next year.

We will be advertising for a fresh team in the

new year and interviewing students who feel

that they are up to the challenge from Editors,

reporters, production team, designers and more.

So, until next year we wish all of our members a

long deserved rest from the reporting world.

Dear Readers,

As you may have noticed this is a newly added page to the imagine magazine

along with the many other changes. This page is called “Raise your voice” which

is basically what all this is about. We will use this page for all the concerns that

you have and any problems that you face in school. We will discuss the things

that bother you and any aspects that you might want to change. We can all

agree that there are many problems but there is no point simply complaining

amongst your friends – this is a chance to fix things.

In this issue we will discuss the idea of common rooms. You have all seen the

nice comfortable room that is isolated for the IB students: soft chairs, computers

and isolation. It’s a place they can always come and either finish up work or

simply relax. Wouldn’t we all want this? But the issue is that the rooms that are

assigned as tutor rooms are not all suitable as common room. For example, my

9D tutor room is in the science room that is either locked most of the time or

used for some very important experiments. On the other hand the year 10-tutor

room is in the drama room. This is much simpler and comfortable for use. There

is a nice sofa there and the year 10 group are free to be in there almost all the

time.

School offers us many places to be in during lunch and break, such as the

cafeteria, library, mexican garden and so on. But are any of them really a place

to relax with your friends? Not really. You might say that the library has all we

need: the cushions, computers and books. The problem is that you are not

allowed to be louder than whisper level, therefore we don’t really have the

freedom to discuss things with our friends along with the access to a computer.

There are possible solutions to this issue but before I investigate this problem

further I must know that there are enough people in the senior school that would

really like to have a room, possibly on the third floor, where you have access to

resources and can just chill. Please write back to me at lpersin@eisp.cz and tell

A few my!e"es...Here are a few !o"es ab$t % teachers in $r school. Read &em and

Story 1When I was at my last school, I owned a Harley Davidson motorcycle. One hot summer afternoon in school it was a very quiet, very sleepy last lesson of the day. The students were in PSHE lessons discussing a very serious topic. I saw the sleepy faces through the classroom window and felt that it was duty to cheer them up so I rode my Harley through the school corridors from one end to the other…they woke up and cheered up… a lot!

One year, a Scottish teacher who had taught at the school for 29 years retired. We were asked to do something memorable for him to wish him well……….registration took longer than normal – see the photo.

Story 2Did you know?....... Not all teachers were teachers from the start!.... She left university and was the double for Joanna Lumley, the

english actress who appeared in The New Avengers television series (see picture to right). The trade union Equity would not give her a union card, so she was not allowed to be the stuntwoman she was hired to be!- but she had enormous fun meeting the famous actors at Pinewood studios and working with them. This led on to her appearing in programmes like The Professionals, a film by Ken Russel and many modeling assignments. She went on o work as a freelance interpreter for Scotland Yard and many police forces in the UK. One such assignment had her sitting by the Queen and Helmut Kohl at the Euro 96 final in Wembley Stadium, making sure that

no rude Czech slogans or banners were being directed at them during the Germany-Czech Republic final.While doing all this and still in her 20’s, she became a teacher and it is her love of children and passion for languages that lead her to teach many children foreign languages in her 20 year teaching career.

I worked as a bread baker from the age of 15-18. It was of the best job I ever had. My grandfather was a foreman at a bakery for many years and when I was teenager I needed a job to make spending

money. He decided to take me in. Actually I was going with him to work since I was a kid, but of course only sometimes. I loved the job so much, not only because I got to spend a lot of time with my grandfather, but also because I loved making bread. Just to give you an idea of how much bread we actually made per day, we could produce anywhere from 300 kg of dough on a slow day or up to 2000 kg during the winter holidays, when Florida gets packed with tourists! From 18-22 I worked as an electrician alongside my uncle. That was also a great job because I learned so much about how to wire up a house, which obviously gave me some knowledge that helps me in my job today. My uncle and I could completely wire a 4-5 bedroom house, including all lighting fixtures, fans, kitchen equipment and air conditioning (a must-have in Florida) in about 4 days. Pretty cool I’d say.

Embarrassing moments? My most vivid memory goes back a year or two; in fact I was 9!

You know when you get something new? You’re the proudest person around and as soon as possible you have to be out so that as many folk as possible can see

you? OK. My Dad bought me my first bike. It was red, medium sized and, rather inevitably in my family, second hand. But he’d done it up nicely and this did not make a blind bit of difference to the proudest 9 year old around. Where could I go, where I could be seen by the most people? Round the village green. And round, and round. Checking out the neighbours, head in the air…..and straight into the back of a parked car. On to the tarmac, grazed knuckles, cut on the chin, dented pride. How fast can a very embarrassed little boy wheel his bike with a bent front wheel away from the Green and out of the public gaze? Not fast enough!

Summer Fete

The Summer Fete is an event that our school holds every year and it is always loads of fun! This year we had the usual attractions as well as some very exciting new ones!

An ever popular event with most students is the ‘Splash the Teacher’. This regularly has long queues and this year was no exception with the teacher line-up including Mr Ogden, Mrs Alden and Mr Stewart!

Other new attractions included a giant bouncy castle, a velcro wall, pony rides and a bucking Bronco - on which several of our Yr8 students surprised us by how long they could hold on for!

Lots of sweets and savory items could be found in on the food stalls located beside the book fayre. All in all it was another successful Summer Fete with a BIG highlight for most students being the amazing hot dog stand!

Strawberry Picnic

The Strawberry Picnic was a great

success as the sun was shining bright

and the children were eating away at the

delicious strawberries and snacks that

their mums and dads had prepared!

As I was sitting eating strawberries and having

fun with my friends I could see that everyone was

enjoying their strawberries, mums, dads,

grandmums, sisters, uncles an everyone else in

between!

Everyone took their space underneath the

canopy and some unlucky people had to sit in the

boiling hot sun, but then again they might have

liked that anyway as they probably wanted to get

a suntan!

The Great Mission in the Playground

On Friday the 23rd, our secret Primary Events detectives went out on a mission to find out what the E.I.S.P. mothers love to chitchat about during the Coffee and Cake in the playground. This is what they found out; they never gossip, but why?

They talk about the weather , shoes, parties, marathons, bad backs from playing golf, about the year 11 students, how the boys did on their IGCSE exams and more. They got a very interesting quote from one of the mothers. Here it goes; “That coffee’s disgusting, who made it?” They never did find out who made the horrible coffee but let’s hope they don’t make it next time. Looks like our detectives did a fantastic job this time, we wonder what’s next?

Open Day

On the 22nd of April we had Open Day. We asked Mrs. Alden what Open Day actually is

and what we essentially do on this day. Here is what we got; “Open Day is a opportunity for

parents and visitors to discover more about what learning looks and feels like at E.I.S.P. It allows parents to see live learning on a normal school day and share with their children the experiences of every day school life”. Now you know what open day really is about and what we do on this special day. On this same day our school was surprisingly visited by a camera crew, who were here to take videos to make a short movie about E.I.S.P. to upload on to the school website. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

An additional thought from Patrick and Honza [Y4L]:We had loads of fun in class. In our topic lesson we presented our music band presentations, this is because we are learning about the band - The Beatles. Everybody had fun then Mrs Lawlor counted up the points. We saw that the other classes also had lots of fun and all the parents had smiles on their faces.

Primary Field TripsStudent Work

Year 4 organized a children in conflict week to help all the children that are: fighting in wars, hungry, thirsty, homeless and without parents.

The activities they organized to raise money were: face painting, non-uniform day, fashion show (they made their own fashionable costumes), disco, bake sale and last but not least a toy sale. Their fundraising week

raised a total of 11,546 kč!

I interviewed some students about what they learned during the week. This is what Tomaš McKee reported: I learned about the names of

different charities that provide help to children in conflict. But Sang won had this to say: I learned about the life style of children in conflict (they have to fight; they have no food, drink, homes and parents). I also asked a couple of students if they had fun and why? Roos had heaps of fun because she missed the most boring lesson (maths!). Jesse enjoyed the week because they raised a lot of money for children in conflict! The year 4’s helped a lot of kids living on the streets, dying of starvation and fighting for their lives. And we helped the children become more fortunate like us, by giving them the money they need.

Pre-Nursery trip to the Station of Nature

On the 4th of May 2010 Pre-Nursery went on to a trip to Prague 5, near Anděl, to the station of nature.

They went there because last half term their theme was the jungle and they went to the station of nature knowing that there would be some jungle animals.

There was a guide to show them around. She gave them new information about animals.

It was very exciting for the children to see so many new animals and they were even allowed to stroke some of them. There were lots of animals including: crocodiles, snakes,

kangaroos and horses.

The kids learned the names of some of the animals and how to approach them, take care of them and about their natural habitat. They said the trip was a whole lot of fun!

Yr 5 trip to the Planetarium.

On Thursday 20th of May Year 5 went to the astonishing Planetarium in Vysta Vyšte. It was interesting and absolutely fun, especially the movie about a robot going into space. Aleksey enjoyed the fascinating Planetarium but he thought that the show about the stars was a bit boring! Nastya and Alexandra told us what they learned and taught us something new too. They learned further about the planets and the stars and about a star nursery ( I never knew that something like this existed!) The year 5's enjoyed their trip a lot!

On Thursday the 15th of April Year 4 took

part in India day. First they actually did

an Indian fashion show, but Baudi Asuev

from 4H didnʼt like the clothes because

they werenʼt modern and he wasnʼt used

to them. Then the Year 4ʼs had lunch at

an Indian restaurant. Jesse learned that

most Indian people use the same type of

spicy sauce on lots of foods and Baudi

loved the rice and chilli sauce mix.

Finally they ended the day with a cricket match in the school

playground. Lots of children thought that Honza and Jesse were the best at it! Everyone had

a lot of fun during India day and they enjoyed the different activities.

India Day

Wednesday the 12th May was our Musical Soiree. Those who were there were very lucky because it was all very beautiful. Our first student that played was Joel from Yr 5 who played three songs with the piano:

Mazurka, Rondo and Mozzie. Daniel was next up and he was one of our youngest students to play. He played violin with recitals of two beautiful

songs, Pease Pudding Hot and Mary had a Little Lamb.

Third up was Jesse on the piano who played Gavot , and Ayla from Yr 1 showed her talents in singing and playing piano. We also had Jakub from Yr 6 who played Etuda very well. For the first time in the Musical Soiree we had someone playing the flute, that someone was Emilya from Yr 6 who played two lovely songs called: Minnet from J.S. Back, and a song piece from 17th Century. Sophie from Yr 6 was next up playing violin to Thanks Giving and Luna from Yr 4 played the song Trumpet Song on the piano.

Jachym also showed us his talents with the recorder. Sarah played a beautiful song, Happy Holiday on the piano, and Anna played Prelude. Sophie D. also played a piece of music on the piano: Gavot. Lauren continued on the piano with Autumn and Tyrannosaures Rex. Jakub was the only one who played a piece of music on the guitar, playing the song Mennet by J.S. Back.

To finish off the Musical Soiree, Jamie played three impressive songs on the piano: Allegro Mode Rato, Allegro Grazioso and Wonderful Tonight. Another entertaining musical feast and a great showing of all our musical talent at EISP.

Year 4L started of the assembly by telling us what primary and secondary evidence they used to research the Beatles. They brought us into the 1960s with a time machine and we saw all the year 4L students in their magnificent costumes.

To show what it was like to live in the 1960’s they did a little sketch and it was really good. They acted out things people did back then; watching horror movies in the cinema, going to the beach and dancing at the disco club. Klara, Patrick and Tomas, as our hosts, showed us some more information about the 1960s from cool fashion with lots of flowers, dancing in space and finely

the rock and roll! The two heroes from 1960’s of the rock & roll were The Beatles and Elvis. To kick off the Rock & Roll part of the assembly they sang the song “Love me do!” with them making the Beatles band out of year 4L pupils: John Lennon on guitar (Anthony), Paul McCartney (Honza), George

Harrison (Brendan) and on drums Ringo Starr (Louis).

But with every assembly there must be a great ending and here they finished it with the song “Yellow Submarine!” Everyone was singing and dancing along

and the band was playing the song on the Playstation 3! a first for an assembly!

Friday the 30th of April saw 2A do a wonderful assembly about active Learning . To start off the the students did a dance, and to see if everyone in the Primary school knew about push and pull they did a small quiz. They showed us a home made small movie which was about how they learn and to finish off the assembly they showed us what they thought was bad and what was good in school. A

What is Duke of Edinburgh program?

Duke of Edinburgh doesn’t only give you an opportunity to shine in front of your friends by flaunting your awards, but it also proves that you are always ready for any sort of adventure and would be able to survive and help others in various extreme situations or conditions. The DofE program would make you realise that there is more to life than just to sit on a sofa and watch life pass you by. By joining the DofE program you would get not only some good memories of guys trying to cook but you will get experience and improve your skills that would stay with you for the rest of your life. There is more to school than pure education, you must try to discover new things out of school too. DofE is open to anyone aged between 14 and 24. What kind of awards are there for DofE?

There are three levels of the program: Bronze, Silver and Gold, that would lead to a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In order to achieve the award you have to complete a personal program of activities that is made out of four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and Residential.

17th April Hike On Saturday, 17th April a group of six students from year 9 and 10 enjoyed their Duke of Edinburgh Spring hike. For a change the weather wasn’t as nasty to us as it used to be in winter times when we had to trust our intuition and hope that we were on the right track. Everything was covered in excessive amount of snow! This time we had a fluke; the sizzling sun was dazzling brightly on to our backs and giving us a light tan while we walked towards our next checkpoint. Yet, the beginning of our trip didn’t look so promising since we entered the wrong train, but luckily enough we were told before the train left that it was not ours. Having realized that our train would be leaving in a few minutes, it wasn’t only students who had to show their sprinting skills but also Miss Gulliford and Miss Sharpe. Having just entered the right train we realized that we were already moving. So our adventure already started

without even getting to Tynec nad Sazavou but at a train station in Prague.

Due to our fast walking, we ended up taking the earlier train back to

Prague and at about 17:30 we were already at the train station.

Having walked 12km, we

couldn’t wait until the following

morning when we would

clearly feel each km on our

feet.

The Reception and Key Stage One children went on a residential trip to Liberec. We had two beautiful sunny days for our trip. On Thursday, all the children went to the botanical gardens and had lunch. Then we split into two groups, the Reception children went to the zoo, followed by milkshakes and cake at a café. Whilst, the Key Stage One children went to the science park and in a scary labyrinth made of mirrors. We met again for a delicious supper. On Friday, we all went to the Luna Park for fun activities and games, including dodgem cars, a trampoline and a climbing wall. The children behaved wonderfully, there were no tears when we left school, or even, at bedtime and we all had a fun and exciting time. We will definitely do a Residential Trip again!

breakfast we split into 2 groups.

First we played volleyball and

early. We jumped into the bus.

Then we drove to the glass

factory and to the cold mine.

After that we played mini-golf.

Then we jumped into the pool.

disco.

Day 1we arrived at the hotel at 12:30. straight away we had lunch and after it we had a long tiring 10km walk. on the way back everybody was exhausted. the best part of the day was when we had a cool refreshing shower.

Day 2we had to wake up really early to go to the boiling glass factory. unfortunately the train could only carry half of us. so my lovely assistant had to walk all the way to the mine. later we shot some points in the mini-golf and splashed around in the swimming pool. after that we busted out our wallets at the shops! Day 3today the people who took the train had to walk up to the romantic water falls but anna was paying more attention to boys. later we sped down the awesome bob sledging track. were we as fast as wind, or slow as snails? the room inspector today was pretty strict!

Day 4Today we were split into groups again. We built shelters and played an orienteering game. During the day people were rehearsing for the talent show. Later, after the BBQ, we rocked the dance floor at the disco.

Day 5Sadly it’s now time to go home. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

We arrived on Monday before noon and after

setting into our rooms and eating lunch we

tackled the first activity of the trip. I think that I

speak for everyone when I say that it was one of

the hardest activities on this residential but it didn’t

stop us from having fun. The activity involved running

in a wide circle holding the hand of someone else in your

team and then switching partners once another pair had

completed a lap. After about thirty laps we were all devastated

and ready for bed despite the fact that it was only about 5pm. We

tried to relax for a while in our rooms or outside before and after dinner

before going inside for “The Ritual”.

The Ritual was something that we took part in each night. As you can guess, it was a

type of mystical ceremony and it involved a large amount of colorful strings, candles

and confessions. The ritual was a way for us to express our feelings towards other

people on the trip by presenting them with strings that could either represent: anger,

happiness, inspiration, or thankfulness.

After we had finished the first ritual, we all put on warm clothes and went into the

gym where we had our daily briefings. We put on helmets and blindfolds and then

listened to a sci-fi horror story and then went for an hour long walk in the woods -

unable to see anything and having to hold onto each other’s hands. Scary Stuff!!

Our Tuesday morning activities were more on the artistic side than the ones of the

previous day. We made gorgeous pointillism replicas in teams by using different

body parts such as our fingers, knees, elbows, and noses. By the end of the activity

most of us would have looked more at home on the set of Avatar. We were constantly

reminded of this activity for the following days as the paint refused to wash off our

clothes and we had a lot of trouble removing it from our hands, faces, and everywhere

it got as well.

After lunch we went into the forest for rope climbing.

We had to balance on differently constructed ropes

and make sure that the rest of our teammates did not

fall. A very popular part of the rope climbing was a

giant swing. Almost everyone enjoyed this apart from

Mark who had a small problem with the full body

harness.

several meters high in the air between two trees. A very popular part of the rope

climbing was a giant swing. Almost everyone enjoyed this apart from Mark who had

a small problem with the full body harness.

On Wednesday morning we took part in three different activities: lacrosse, cross-

country golf, and archery. Archery was probably the most popular one but we did all

three and although several of us were really bad at lacrosse and we spent a large

part of the golf looking for the ball in the trees and bushes and finding unused

paintballs; we enjoyed them all.In the afternoon we had a trip into the forest and

this time it was to take a psychological test through a debate about a story that we

listened to. A workshop about survival skills was next, in which we learnt the best

way to make a fire, create a shelter and reviewed rules about how to treat the

environment which we are visiting and other visitors to that area.

The activity we took part in on Thursday morning was certainly one of our

favorites on this trip. We had to make a raft, which could carry about five or six members of each team

across the lake. Everyone got soaked and everyone had a tremendous amount of fun. But the lake was freezing cold

and once we had got our we had to dissemble the rafts we had put together before we could go and change, so

everyone was still chilled to the bone three hours later, when we went onto the next activity.

We spent two hours trying to use maps and compasses to find checkpoints in the forest- but mostly just ended up

getting lost and laughing hysterically.

Making a DifferenceSome say that when you visit a place it is the people that leave the biggest impression on you. Jasper is one of those people. He went to school as everyone else until his father died. His relatives could not support him as they could hardly support themselves and so he could not pay his school fees and had to drop out. He found a job as a secretary for the WHO (World Health Organisation) which he did for several years. After a few years he was able to rent a room and pay his school fees so he could finish his secondary education this year at the age of 24. After school Jasper works in a hotel in order to make money to continue paying his rent and school fees. His life is harder than we can possibly imagine and his only driving force is the vision that one day he might become a lawyer. Characters like Jasper define determination and define belief. Lessons learnedThey learned how new technology can be applied to education and we learned their enthusiastic attitude toward education. Their thought is that education is the only way to improve their lives. On average, there are more than 70 people in a class. When I attended a maths lesson, there were 100 students in a class and I was not able to listen to the teacher and read what he writes because I was at the back. However, every single student paid attention to the teacher and enjoyed learning. Last but not the least, we altogether learned about each other and the different cultures. Therefore, I strongly believe that the project succeeded in not only charity but also shortening the cultural distance between each other. Materials simply come and go. What’s importantWe went to Uganda not only to bring them projectors and computers but also to set up a relationship between their school and ours so that we can help them in years to come. And so although I think we have made a big impact already, by giving the opportunity to learn with the help of technology, we need to keep thinking about the future projects with them and keep working together to achieve this goal.

Enough said about just the project, the students and teachers of Arua Public Secondary School are really great people. Everyone at the school was so helpful and generous; they really made me feel as if I was part of their society. What I found that really brought us together with the students of Arua Public was playing basketball with them. Although the court we helped set up over there wasn’t perfect, it was one of the best games of basketball I have ever played. Reported by Robert

The Spirit of CommunityThe similar determination as in their studies could be seen in the way the school was dealing with an issue HIV. There were plenty of signs saying “Why die young” or “Don’t accept gifts for sex.” around secondary as well as primary school, which were reminding the students of AIDS, one of the most serious diseases. Once I have been teaching a biology lesson together with one of the African teachers, I

noticed that he had a rash on his hands and that he in general didn’t look very healthy. Knowing that AIDS is very common in this region, I occurred to me that he might be infected as well. After lesson, when we had a chance to talked he was willing to talk to me very openly and he confirmed my suspicion about his disease. Although, we often hear stories about people suffering from AIDS, having chance to hear somebody talk very openly about “the biggest mistake in his life”, which was the way he referred to a night he got infected was a great shock to me. He told me about his troubles with getting medicines and his loneliness due to his separation from the rest of his family. Despite suffering from a lethal disease, he was putting all his effort into teaching. I admired him for being able to shift all his problems aside and concentrate on helping the students to achieve the maximum in their lives. Reported by Martina

Early Years Sports Day

Early Years Sports Day was a spectacle for everyone from Pre-Nu r se r y t o Recep t i on . The atmosphere was brilliant in the sports hall with the noise unbelievable. Some of the star players for me were Lucy from Reception for brilliant speed, Penny from Reception for really high bouncing and Nikki from Reception for being fast and high jumping.

Some of the games that the little children were playing were: Space Hopper where you bounced on a space hopper while going in and out of cones in a slalom. The Obstacle Course where you had to go through some obstacles and roll this big doughnut back to the start. The Goal game saw the children shoot the footballs into the goal which they were good at. It was really funny watching the children crawl through a giant net which some of them got stuck in - this would have been a good game for the teachers!

After all of the games the parents joined in with some races of their own! The little kids found the parent games really funny, especially when some of their parents had to run backwards with a hoop on their head!

The day finished off in the assembly hall where Mr Winch and Miss Drummond presented the children wi th cer t i f i cates and thanks everyone for making the day so much fun. Mr Winch thanked all the teachers for helping make the sports day so great, with special thanks to Miss Drummond for brining the event altogether.

KS1 Sports Day

On Thursday the 17th of June the KS1 sports day took place. I was on the field and there were lots of activities for everyone to play and have fun with!

The children were amazing and even though they are only little they are as quick as lightening!!! The children were very excited and I could tell as they all had great big smiles on their faces in between panting and falling over! Whenever one of their teammates was racing t h e y w o u l d s c r e a m encouragement by chanting names and saying things like “

you can do it, come on!”. This also showed their teammates they were proud to be on their team!!!

Lots of events took place from sprinting, tag rugby, sack racing, bean bag th row ing and loads more . Eventually the winners of the house competition was Phoenix with Dragon and Griffin so close together, only separated by 1 point! Even though there had to be a winner the main part of the d a y w a s a l l a b o u t h a v i n g fun!

THE PHOENIX ARE VICTORIOUS ON SPORTS DAY

With 30 points to spare, which is a considerable gap in this annual Inter House competition, Phoenix were dominating on the 2010 Senior Sports Day. In an already unassailable position, the Phoenix relay teams won 3 out of the 4 races and sealed the win after a thoroughly absorbing morning of athletics. The winning 9/10 boys’ and girls’ teams from Phoenix earned the right to take on the mighty staff relay teams and even extended their winning streak to make the staff teams look almost mundane in an exciting finale. With great results from Ha and Lukáš leading the way and Muriel and Yulia chipping in with top scores in Javelin, Dragon and Griffin houses were chasing points for most of the morning. We saw some brilliant individual efforts, but it has to be remembered that every single person had something to add to the totals. Looking at the Junior results, you could have been forgiven for thinking that Griffin were well on the way for having their hands on the trophy. After the “whole house” games events in the centre of the arena they should not have been overhauled but Dragon house pulled out a victory in both relays to give Dragon a 4 point victory. A very colourful and memorable day with many thanks to all the participants and the staff and student helpers.

Sports day was a brilliant event. The sun was shining and there was probably not a cloud in the sky. Sports day took place on Thursday the 10th of June 2010. EVERYONE did really great no matter where they came in any of the races. There were some top racers in sports day that could run at the speed of sound. Senior students strutted their stuff during Sports Day this year with some personal best scores broken!

Students represented their Houses across a wide range of athletic events. The Impressive height at which was jumped by Ha (Yr9) in the high jump was just short of his record best and there were some impressive running times from all competitors. In the annual Teachers verses students race the Year 9/10 boys were victorious with the Men teachers in second closely followed by the Yr 9/10 Girls and

late entrants - the Women teachers!

On Saturday 12th June a group of very talented KS2 students performed the musical of Roalds Dahl's Three Little Pigs based on his Revolting Rhymes.

Dressed in wonderful costumes and amazing make up the students dazzled and entertained an audience of mums, dads, grandmas, grandpas, teachers and friends.

All the students worked very hard rehearsing and learning lines and songs and the results were excellent. Many of the audience members commented on what a wonderful performance they had seen.

We are all looking forward to the KS2 musical next year.

The annual Inter-schools sports tournament took place this term and this year it was held in Bratislava! Nord Anglia European schools all came together to contest the prized trophy won last year by ourselves! It was yet another great event with EISP retaining the trophy for yet another year!

Netball Under 11 girl’sThe under 11 girl’s netball team played brilliantly,

the teamwork was high quality; the spacing was

very good. The score for the first game was 6-1

to EISP. The two top scorers were Amy 6M with 4

goals and Jolana 6M with 2 goals! In the next

game Amy 6M scored 3 goals with help from the

team of course, the score finished 3-2. The EISP

under 11 netball team has never lost a game!

Football Under 11 Boy’s

The boy’s football team had a mixture of results

with a win, draw and loss but the players of the

team have to give a BIG thank you to their

goalkeeper Honza 6M who had a rough time

because some of the other teams’ shots were

so hard he couldn’t keep some of them out, but

that doesn’t matter. Also on the up side of

things Daniel 5G scored some smashing goals.

Floorball Under 11 Boy’sIt was a very tough scrap! First game, the boys were really trying. The teamwork was very good and also very smooth passes to each other! The final result was 3-0, and the top scorer was Michael 6C. The second game score was 2-2 so it was a draw. Overall they did very well!

Floorball Under 11 Girl’sThey played so well, especially Kate 6C, Ujiana 5J and Amy 6C. In all the matches we had played we won! We don’t know whether we were good or they were bad – who knows! One of the matches we played we won 10-1 with the spectacular goals by Ujiana 5J, Caroline 5J and Amy 6M!

Under 14’s in Bratislava

This year’s 2010 sports tournament in Bratislava was great (especially since Prague got first place). On Thursday 6th of May we were supposed to leave at 1p.m, but were held back because Zalla and I didn’t bring our passports with us (by the time our mums would bring the passports it would be around 2). Fortunately Mrs. F managed to sort things out and we didn’t need them in the end. On Thursday afternoon (when we arrived) we just chilled and hung out in a shopping mall till around 9. That was a great way to rest and calm down before the actual tournament.

The best thing about the sports tournament was probably the free food and drinks. They also handed out Bratislava sports bags and T-shirts to everyone participating.

On Friday we entered the sports hall, our team felt so nervous. Some of the people in our team had plenty of experience so they didn’t feel worried before the match. We played 3 games against Budapest, Bratislava and Warsaw.

We came second place, losing only one match to Budapest. They had a really good team- fast and tall with great accuracy

in shooting and passing. Before the match against Budapest Mr. Smith told us about them and we felt so scared and stressed. The player who I had to block admitted that her team was scared to play against us as well because their coach had freaked them out. It was sort of funny that we both feared each other but in the end they won. The players who were part of U14 netball team were Zalla, Yaren, Sammy, Sofia, Pavlina, Niousha, Johanna and me (Zari).

Our football team didn’t receive as much training so that’s why I felt anxious and nervous about this. Our football team consisted of Lilly, Pavlina, Sofia, me, Zalla, Sammy, Niousha, Johanna and Yaren. Again – we took second place in the football match losing one game to Warsaw. We were about to lose to Budapest because our team were all down (due to our previous failure with Warsaw) but then on the second half Sammy and Johanna scored two goals in and the

t ime was up! We won! Again, we got free food but this time it was way better. The most popular was the muffins (of course) and the sandwiches tasted really good as well.

At the end of all the tournaments they counted up our scores and Prague won first place! At the mention of Prague the whole crowd stood up and

screamed, cheered, clapped and stomped so loudly. All the people from other schools looked at us with a lot of jealousy but hey, what can we do since we’re so good? The team is already looking forward to next year for the hat-trick!

EISP’s second Science Day took place this term and they

just keep getting funnier and funnier! The day started

with a Senior school quiz which took place in the theatre,

the questions were really difficult (for some) and

embarrassing for others, don’t worry no names

mentioned...!

After break the fun really started as

students split into mixed year groups

to complete a challenge using only

the mater ia ls suppl ied in the

classroom and they could only ask for

one additional piece of equipment.

The problem was they had to think of

what they could ask for!

The challenge was to build a rocket which would fly as high as possible

with the highest obviously winning. The rocket launch took place at

lunchtime as everyone gathered in the Mexican garden to watch the

spectacle. There were some interesting constructions on offer, some that

reached as high as the 3rd floor and some that, well, basically didn’t

move.....again I won’t mention any

names! One group thought of using

Mr Smiths air pump and that ended

with the most convincing unsupported

take off however stiff competition was

presented by another rocket (balloon)

which took off attached to a guiding

string that was tied to the 3rd floor

window! Cheating I hear you say,

maybe but we will have to check the

rule book for that one.

The day was a great success and it was great to see the students working

together to problem solve by themselves as the teachers who didn’t teach

Science, well it was obvious why!

Science & Earth Day

Having put so much effort, planning and organization into the one

day hike on Friday, 14th May, the bad weather attempted to spoil it

all. Yet, the real DofE students can surmount such difficulties and no

matter what the weather was like, everyone still went on the hike. It

seemed like it would be a unique experience for most of the

students especially for girls as some of them had never slept in a

tent before. When we arrived at the train station, the sky was

covered in grey raging clouds that didn’t look promising. For a

change, something brought a smile to girls’ faces when the decision

was made to divide students into two groups: girls and boys. Gasps

of relief were heard as the girls realized that they would not have to race to the camping place. While we were

walking on the wet and muddy tracks that were surrounded by the nature that looked like it was crying, the

angry grey clouds followed us until they burst out crying too. Due to the boys’ fast walking, they managed to

arrive to the camping place half an hour before girls who just arrived in time at the camping place before it

started to rain heavily. Even though it looked like the hardest bit of the day was over, the second challenge

came when it was time to prepare the place for sleeping – TENTS! Hmm ... yes, it did take some of us some

time to do that! Having felt the morning breeze, cooked the breakfast and packed everything, we took off to

our next destination. The biggest incentive to continue walking was the train back to Prague. Saturday ended

up being full of high hills, muddy clothes and shoes and obviously aching legs, yet everyone did

achieve their aim and got back to Prague before the late evening.

Well done to the boys, who walked fast enough to be back in

Prague at 2p.m, yet none of the girls slipped on the tracks unlike

Gustav who came back home covered in mud. The adventure

wouldn’t have happened without Miss Gulliford, Miss Dostalova and

Miss Dykes‘ help. Now, students are starting to prepare for their

exams just as well as for their next hike that will take place in

September. Well done, Bob (Yr.12), Honza, Gustav, Lukas,

Lotte, Dasha, Gitika and Yulia (Yr.10) and Lilly, Marina and Anna

(Yr.9).

Mr Smiths’ Ballet Dance! otherwise know as Athletics Club

As you all know Mr. Smith plays (or at least says he plays...) many sports. But who would’ve thought that Ballet was one of them?!!! It’s not exactly like it seems. In this picture he’s trying to teach us how to throw the discus, differently….! These exciting activities are happening after school in athletics clubs. It’s extremely amusing and fun. How about you join us too?

Back in September our Parents Association reformed and we were delighted to see Patricia van het Bolscher re-elected at the helm of this very important community group.

Thanks to Patricia and her team, it has been an exceptionally busy year jam-packed with successful events helping to raise an impressive grand total of 257, 658 CZK. the proceeds of which have gone in part to supporting our whole school Uganda Project but also to a local Czech charity, Zdravotni Klaun (Clinic Clowns), Haiti as well as funds raised for EISP. The season kicked off with a wonderful International food fair which brought together the culinary specialities of more than 20 different nations. In autumn we saw a re turn o f the group ’s h igh ly popu lar Hallowe’en weekend event including even more games and a fantastic fireworks display provided courtesy of the Benedikt family at school. Other events during the year included a Christmas Bazaar, an Easter Bunny morning in April, numerous garage sales not to mention June’s spectacular Summer Fete.

In addition to this wide array of events, the PA also found time to put their creative talents to use by producing a recipe box including favourite starters, mains and desserts shared by parents, staff and EISP pupils. This was a resounding success and the group hopes to do something similar in the future. Both the school and the PA would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Phoenix Zeppelin, Tesco, the Benedikt family, Co-packing, Nestle and Ferrero Rocher for their generous donations without which these events would not be possible. The school would also like to extend a huge thank you to all members of the Parents Association for their continued support – some of you will be leaving this year and we wish you all the best in the next chapter of your lives!

IB Graduation Ball

Our IB Students have graduated!! After slogging their way through final exams and coursework it was time for our seven IB students to put their feet up and enjoy their success! The Graduation ball saw the students, their families and even the teachers get dressed up in their best suits and frocks to honor the IB students achievements.

The night got off to a fine start with two previous IB students taking center stage as the evenings hosts to introduce us to some happy memories from the students time at EISP. This was followed by speeches from Mr Rowsell, Mr Flint and Mr Kucker with each offering their own words of wisdom on life after studies. In between we had some lovely entertainment in the form of Tango dancing. The IB students then presented each of their teachers with flowers as a sign of appreciation for their hard work over the course of their studies and for putting up with their tantrums along the way!

The remainder of the evening, well, that was left for the IB students to enjoy away from their teachers supervision!
