WHO WILL SURVIVE?

We are going to begin reading the novel Lord of the Flies. While reading this novel, you will be placed in survivor teams. As a team, you will work together to try to win the ultimate prize. Points will be conducted depending on various tests or missions throughout the next few weeks. These tests/missions may be unit quizzes, word searches, crossword puzzles, trivia questions, short essays, artistic drawings etc. Working together is the key to survival. Each person in your group has an individual strength, and it is up to you to find it.

• You will receive a group grade and an individual grade. • If you choose to leave your group and work on your own, your points stat over • You can switch groups only if a unanimous vote determines that everyone in the team you will to switch to want you. (This can only happen after chapter 5.) • Your quiz and study guide scores are averaged together to earn points.

SUMMARIZE LORD OF THE FLIES Summarize each chapter as you read. This will help you to study for the quizzes, review for the test, and complete the study guide. Each summary should be at least one paragraph (8 – 10 complete sentences). The summaries will be turned in on the day that you take the test _______________________ along with the character analysis chart. One way to summarize any chapter with conflict in it is to use the SWBS method: Somebody, Wanted, But, So (you can substitute other coordinating conjunctions for the “but”). Example: In the book Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, scientist Henry Jekyll wanted to use a persona to engage in his wicked impulses, but the persona ended up taking over his identity, so Jekyll finally gave in and eventually died as a result.

Literary Analysis for Lord of the Flies Understanding Characterization Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character. A writer can use direct characterization when stating or describing a character’s traits. Indirect characterization is when an author shows a character’s personality through his or her actions, thoughts, feelings, and words, or through another character’s observations and reactions. Indirect characterization relies on the reader to put together the clues in order to figure out the character’s personality. It is important to remember that characterization relies upon the character’s traits and not upon him or her physical appearance. Complete the chart below with each character’s physical description, the traits he demonstrates at the beginning of the novel, and changes (if any) the character exhibits as he moves through the story.

Understanding Symbolism Symbolism is the narrative technique used to give significance or deeper meaning to certain people or objects, which represent some other figure. For example, a rose can be a symbol of love. Depending upon the color of the rose, it may suggest a particular kind of love (i.e. Red roses symbolize passion, pink roses are for friendship, or yellow roses represent jealousy). Lord of the Flies—Piggy’s letter home Here is your mission: Pretend you are Piggy. Write a letter home to “Auntie” telling her what is going on with all of the boys on the island. Be sure to explain how you are feeling at this moment. Make up an address for both the island and your auntie back home. Remember, the boys are not from the United States. Be creative and use the correct letter format (heading, inside address, salutation, body, closing, signature). The most creative letter, with the correct format, and the best understanding of the novel with win survivor points. The letters will be graded using the 6 + 1 trait rubric. “We Ought to Draw a Map…” Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a map of the island that our little British friends have inhabited. 16 Quotations from Lord of the Flies Themes in literature are the main issues an author wishes to address through his work. Often this is done through characters’ speeches.
