FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK

I would like to start the year with a big thank you to all who helped make 2015 the big success that it was for us. Together we made it. Here we are in 2016! Classes are in full swing yet again and we have some new and exciting programmes to report. We are lucky to have been able to start two new programmes ESOL Intensive and Work Talk. ESOL Intensive is a programme for people wanting intensive tuition with classes running for 2.5 hours Monday to Friday for 250 hours per course. This programme is for Permanent Residents and Citizens and is absolutely free to learners. Work Talk is a programme for people either looking for employment or already in employment wanting to move on to that next opportunity.

We have started the year with a new Coordinator in the office- Joanne Lee.

Joanne has been an Office Intern with us before she kindly agreed to cover

the Coordinator role while Anastasia is away on parental leave. Anastasia

and her husband Sergei have since welcomed their lovely baby girl Sacha to

the family.

On the programmes front we have had a few changes and a few additions.

English Language Groups (ELG) Our classes now run for 8 weeks a term for four terms a year. Specific dates can be obtained from the office. We have one Beginner class that runs for two hours a week. Our main hub continues to be Glenfield Community Centre with five of our classes running from there. We have two classes at the New Zealand Chinese Christian Church.

* if the learner has less than **80 credits on the NZQF; or * if the learner has more than **80 credits on the NZQF, the learner has less than 12 credits in literacy and/or numeracy in Unit standards/ achievement standards.

The course runs for 250 hours as 2.5 hours per day 5 days a week and is held at the New Zealand Chinese Christian Church under the expert eye of Marisa Gonzalez. The first course finishes on 8th July and the second course will start on 25

th July finishing on 9

th

December. We are currently enrolling for Course 2. The photo below shows course 1 learner Kasama Hongprom celebrating her birthday with her class. Maria Cosma on Kasama’s left baked a chocolate cake for the celebration.

Work Talk This is another new programme we introduced this year. This is a four weeks (48 hours) intensive programme which prepares migrants for entering the New Zealand workforce. Focus is on: 1. learning about expectations of the NZ workplace, basic legislation and employment information, ways of applying for work

2. understanding and practising interview skills 3. understanding and using appropriate Kiwi English in the workplace

Learners must be actively seeking work, and be confident users of English (intermediate level or above). Learners who need to improve their English should enrol for an ESOL programme before entering Work Talk. The first Work Talk course starts on 18th April.

Please read further on page 4

We have bid farewell to two long serving teachers Jill Mil-ler and Christine Rowe who have left to be with family and pursue other opportunities. Sam Booth has now tak-en up the St George’s Church Intermediate/Upper Inter-mediate class from Jill Miller while Michele Revell will be picking up the St Peter’s Church Elementary/Pre Interme-diate class from term 2. Sam and Michele are not new to the centre as they have already been teaching in other groups.

English for Employees (E4E) This year we continue with the 18 weeks and 11 weeks courses as we did last year. After Sam took up an ELG and Jan Scott took the Waitemata DHB class at Takapuna Hospital we have now appointed two new E4E teachers Marisa Gonzalez and Charles Dugmore. Marisa is returning to ELPNZ North Shore after having worked as the centre Coordinator be-tween 2007 and 2008. Charles joins us from Massey Uni-versity where he is an English teacher in the Massey DEEP programme.

English for Migrants (EFM) We continue to teach English to adults who have pre-purchased English lessons through the New Zealand Im-migration Service as a part of their residency require-ments. If you know of anyone who falls into this category, please advise them that we can provide them with a one-on-one English teacher.

ESOL Intensive This year we introduced this new programme with the aim being to raise the levels of adult literacy and numeracy. To be eligible for this programme learners are one of the following:

A refugee, protected person, or person sponsored by a refugee or protected person;

A migrant; or A person for whom English is his or her second lan-

guage; Is, and continues to be a New Zealand citizen or

permanent resident of New Zealand; Is 16 years of age and over; and Has low English Language and/or literacy skills,

meaning:

LEARNER’S CORNER

Ameerah and Doreen feature in the North Shore Times In January, one of our learners, Ameerah Al-marrani and her tutor, Doreen Hall, shared their story with the North Shore Times – the article made it to the front page of the paper! You can read the story here. What was so delightful about this story was how Ameerah’s neighbours really look out for one another and how the baker would drop off bread to her home as she had trouble walking. Great community spirit in action! What was also very apparent from meeting Ameerah and Doreen is that they have built up such a lovely friendship.

IELTS Support We offer support to people preparing to sit the IELTS examination. The course focuses on skills needed for students to reach their intended IELTS grade requirements and succeed in an academic environment. Upon completion of their current course students should be ready for their next IELTS level or to take the IELTS examination. Sam the IELTS teacher is an experienced IELTS examiner. Two of our learners from last year have now moved on to Tertiary education after getting the scores they needed for entry.

We have yet another lovely production “Celebrating the Year of the Monkey 2016” from Chris Howe and her Glenfield Elementary Group. In “Celebrating the Chinese New Year” the group put together a very simple but interesting story which could be used as a resource for beginner learners. The pictures and the story are very simple but rich in

things you could do with your learners. We have a hard copy in our library if you would like to photocopy sections for your use. You may remember that Chris and her class produced “Winter Warmers” last year and I hope you tried some of their hot drink recipes.

We Are Enrolling Work Talk Course 1 Work Talk programme will start on 18th April. The course is designed for anyone with the right to work in New Zealand except for working holiday visa holders.

English Language Groups(ELG) The ELG term 1 is almost at the end. Term 2 classes start on 9th May.

Police Recruits Literacy Programme We are enrolling learners in course 2 which will start on 18 July. To be eligible for this programme you need to be a NZ Citizen or have a Resident / Permanent Resident visa.

ESOL Intensive Programme The upcoming Course 2 will start on 25th July. Please check the ESOL Intensive introduction on page 2 for more details.

Welcome to the tutors from Course 4 2015 who completed their training course in November last year. We have finished the process of matching them with their learners. We hope that they will enjoy their involvement with English Language Partners. Front row (from left): Anne Dunlop (Training & Resurces Coordinator), Sara Janvekar, Claire Abrasado, Marissa McGauley, Grace Qing, Carol Hinksman, Deidre Broome.

Back row (from left): Anelise Tordivelli, Arie Van Der Zwan, Vivien Huang, Rona Taylor-Smith, Claire Matthews, Rachel Nobilo, Kelly Da, Vera Armishaw, Tina Hyde, Jill Kessner, Michelle Yin, Innocent Mandizvidza, Kate Coleman, Ethan Su.

Group matching Group matching has proved very popular with our newly trained volunteer tutors. The most common comment from tutors has been, “It is comforting to see the other tutors in a similar process”, and from learners, “I am not the only one learning”.

WELCOME NEW TUTORS
