As our students will tell you, English Martyrs’ is a wonderful school. We are proud of our outstanding care for students, high standards for all, and our service to the wider community. We know that everyone is uniquely created in the image and likeness of God, and we strive to meet the distinctive needs and talents of each person.

Enriched by the Performing Arts, we provide a first-rate education for students aged 11-19.

We are a community centred in prayer and ask, as St Paul says, that the message of Christ, in all its richness, may find a home with us.

I hope that you enjoy reading this prospectus, which offers a brief insight into our community.

Everything we do is part of our spiritual life. We seek to recognise God in each person, in all our words and actions. We pray together each morning at assembly or in form groups.

We also hold special celebrations of Mass to mark important feast days or events. Voluntary Mass is celebrated regularly in the School Chapel on Friday mornings. Students play a leading role in liturgy by reading, serving and making music and as Eucharistic Ministers.

Retreats are held for each year group and there is an annual pilgrimage to Walsingham.

We understand that engagement in the Performing Arts helps students to develop self-confidence - so important in all spheres of life. To this end, all students study Art, Dance, Drama and Music, with many students also choosing to take part in Further Music study.

Students can take part in exhibitions, shows and performances throughout the year, as well as using their skills for the good of others in our local primary schools and local community.

There are many opportunities for learning outside the classroom. These include visits to art galleries, museums, theatres, concerts, operas, fieldwork at sites of geographical, scientific or historical interest, and

involvement in broadcasting on the school’s own radio station.

Our rich and varied sporting life allows students to play a number of team sports such as badminton, basketball, boys’ and girls’ football, hockey, cricket, netball, rounders, rugby and table tennis. We also offer a range of other fitness opportunities.

Students are supported in a variety of ways. In class, support is offered to meet the needs of particular students as necessary. Study facilities are available before and after school and at lunchtime. We also have a rich programme of Gifted and Talented educational opportunities.

Sixth Form students follow courses which allow in-depth learning, building on their talents and strengths, to enable them to pursue further study or chosen employment. The majority of Sixth Form students take up university courses in a wide range of subjects.

Studies are carefully directed and closely monitored. Students are given a great deal of independence and expected to develop good autonomous study habits, which are essential to success. Our Sixth Form students take a number of leadership roles in the community, led by the Head Boy and Girl.
