Mike: I can’t believe! What about our soccer game this

afternoon?

Jason: Sorry, I’m taking care of her for the moment, but my

mother is coming soon. So I am leaving later.

CONTINUOUS TENSE

Form: to be* +

verb + -ing

* AM, IS, ARE

Uses:

I. For an action happening at the

moment you are speaking.

- What are you doing now?

- I am taking care of my dog.

Uses:

II. To talk about temporary situations

(aspect temporário).

- I am taking care of my cousin for the

moment.

- I usually go to the college in the morning,

but as I’m on vacation, I’m staying at

home.

Uses:

III. To talk about future happenings

(used with adverbs and pre-arranged

events or actions).

- My bf* is coming soon. So I am leaving

later.

*bf = best friend

Interrogative

Para fazer a sentença na forma interrogativa, é bemsimples: basta trocar de lugar o verbo to beconjugado e o pronome.

Ex.:

Are you eating well? (Você está se alimentando bem?)

Am I working hard? (Eu estou trabalhando muito?)

Is the cat drinking water? (O gato está bebendo água?)

INGLÊS, 1º anoPresent Continuous and Past Continuous

Interrogative

Na forma interrogativa, pode-se usar os question words, por exemplo: what (O quê?), where (Onde?), why (Por quê?) etc., que são usados para obter informações específicas. Geralmente, elas são colocadas antes dos verbos auxiliares / to be.

Ex.:

Where are you going? (Aonde você está indo?)

What are you doing? (O que você está fazendo?)

Why are you sleeping until now? (Por que você está dormindo até agora?)


NegativePara fazer o verbo na forma negativa, acrescentamos o NOT ao final do verbo to be. Essa forma também pode ser abreviada. Entretanto, deve-se lembrar que as formas abreviadas podem ser utilizadas somente em situações informais.

Ex.:

You aren’t eating well. (Você não está se alimentando bem.)

I am not sleeping yet. (Eu não estou dormindo ainda.)

He is not waiting for you. (Eu não estou esperando por você.)

Gerund (verb + ing)- A forma verbal acrescida de –ing é chamada gerúndio (gerund). Essa é a forma nominal do verbo que indica processo. Para se formar o gerúndio de alguns verbos, além de lançar mão da regra geral (verb + -ing), é necessário fazer algumas adaptações.

Veja a seguir:


Gerund (verb + ing)

• VERBOS TERMINADOS EM –E: retira-se o –e e acrescenta-se –ing

Change (mudar):changing

live (viver): living

*EXCEÇÕES: Be (ser, estar): being

lie (mentir): lying

die (morrer): dying

Ex.: I am having dinner now. (Eu estou jantando agora.)

You are lying. (Você está mentindo.)


• VERBOS DE UMA SÍLABA OU DUAS (DESDE QUE A ÚLTIMA SEJA TÔNICA) TERMINADOS NA SEQUÊNCIA CONSOANTE-VOGAL-CONSOANTE: dobra-se a última letra e acrescenta-se –ing

run (correr): running

stop (parar): stopping

Ex.: Sarah is running very fast. (Sarah está correndo muito rápido.)He is stopping at the corner. (Ele está parando na esquina.)

Obs.: Em inglês britânico, dobra-se a consoante L => travel (viajar): travelling

EXCEÇÃO: Não se dobram as consoantes w e x:

Snow (nevar): snowing

fix (arrumar): fixing

*CASO A SÍLABA TÔNICA SEJA A PRIMEIRA, somente acrescenta-se –ing

open (abrir): opening

happen (acontecer): happening (2)

• VERBOS TERMINADOS EM –Y: acrescenta-se –ing.

play (jogar): playing

say (dizer): saying

try (tentar): trying

cry (chorar): crying

Examples:

Wait! I am playing video game. (Espere! Eu estou jogando videogame.)Look! He is saying something. (Olhe! Ele está dizendo alguma coisa.)

This exercise is difficult. I’m trying to do it. (Esse exercício é difícil. Eu estou tentando fazê-lo.)Oh my God, she is crying. (Oh meu Deus, ela está chorando.)


• VERBOS TERMINADOS EM –IE: troca-se o –ie por –y e acrescenta-se –ing

lie (mentir): lying

die (morrer): dying

Ex.: She is lying to me. (Ela está mentindo para mim.)He’s dying. (Ele está morrendo.)


VERB + -ing (spelling rules)

Usos do Gerúndio:

I. Para formar os continuous tenses.

- The kids are playing on the backyard

(As crianças estão brincando no quintal).

Usos do Gerúndio:

II. Após verbos de percepção.

- He saw me doing that.

(Ele me viu fazendo aquilo)

- He heard me playing the piano.

(Ele me ouviu tocando piano).

Usos do Gerúndio:

III. Depois de preposição ou de

verbos que exigem o gerúndio.

- He is tired of working.

(Ele está cansado de trabalhar.)

- She enjoys studying with us.

(Ela gosta de estudar conosco.)

*Abaixo estão 7 verbos em inglês que exigem que o

segundo verbo esteja no gerúndio (-ing).

• To enjoy (gostar) – I enjoy reading magazines.

• To avoid (evitar) – She avoided answering the

question.

• To finish (terminar) – He has finished cleaning.

• To stop (parar) – I can´t stop listening to music.

• To miss (sentir falta) – I miss working with

children.

• To imagine (imaginar) – Can

you imagine staying at home every day?

• To admit (admitir) – He admitted being guilty

Usos do Gerúndio:

IV. Quando tem função adjetiva.

- This is a very interesting book.

(Este é um livro muito interessante.)

- That is an exciting story.

(Essa é uma história emocionante.)

Usos do Gerúndio:

V. Quando funciona como substantivo.

- Walking is good for heath.

(Caminhada é bom para saúde.)

- My feeling is you are right.

(Meu sentimento é de que você está certo.)
