Eurotoolbox – What is that?

A handy tool pack for travelling by car in Europe? - an investment package for saving your hard-earned Euros? - or a free resource for librarians and teachers who need to inspire children with the latest children’s books in European languages?

If you chose the last of these options you’d be right on the button.

Eurotoolbox is a resource collection which has been put together by Eurolis a group of expert librarians in the cultural centres of France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Spain with the assistance of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) in the UK.

All the books in the collection have been specially chosen for you, they are the very best recently published in the following original languages: French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. The English language is represented as well, thanks to a donation by CILIP of the books shortlisted for the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway children’s books awards in the current year.

With many years of production experience and feedback from the users, the expert team of librarians have built a resource which enables librarians and teachers to use over 90 books in each collection for individual reading or group sessions in their own library or the schoolroom for a month at a time at no cost to their organisation other than onward transportation to the next location in the UK.

Beyond the Fence By Maria Gulemetova

Piggy lives in a large house with Thomas. Thomas knows exactly what Piggy needs. But a chance meeting with a wild pig changes everything, and Piggy finds out what lies outside the four walls, beyond the fence. A gentle book about freedom and friendship.

The author and illustrator: Maria Gulemetova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her father was an illustrator, and her mother is an art historian. Their house was full of beautiful illustrated books, and she remembers spending many hours absorbed in the pictures. Gradually, however, she discovered a love of communicating ideas through stories, which led her to the MA course at Anglia Ruskin. Currently she lives in Eugene, Oregon, with her husband and two kids, where they enjoy plenty of rain, wildlife and natural beauty.

The Day the War Came By Rebecca Cobb and Nicola Davies

Imagine if, on an ordinary day, war came. Imagine it turned your town to rubble. Imagine going on a long and difficult journey – all alone. Imagine finding no welcome at the end of it. Then imagine a child who gives you something small but very, very precious...Nicola Davies started a campaign for which artists contributed drawings of chairs, symbolising a seat in a classroom, education, kindness, the hope of a future. The book should prove a powerful aid for explaining the ongoing refugee crisis to younger readers.

The author: Nicola Davies is an award-winning author of children‘s books. Nicola graduated in zoology, studied whales and bats and then worked for the BBC Natural History Unit. She lives in Crickhowell, Wales.

The illustrator: Rebecca Cobb graduated from the Falmouth School of Art in 2004. She has collaborated with authors Julia Donaldson and Helen Dunmore and film-maker Richard Curtis on Christmas titles. Rebecca was the winner of the 2013 Waterstones Prize.
