Preface This workbook is a diagnostic tool as well as a curriculum for English Language Learners who are considered newly arrivals in the United States. Many of the quizzes and longer tests are designed as pretest instruments for determining base levels. For this reason the contents of the workbook are not presented in any sequential order for mastery. The lessons are geared to the mastery language levels for middle school students. Learning expectations for students are explained as success levels for mastery and are based on the following assumptions. • Students achieve at least 80% of a score of 100 for correct answers on any given examination. • At least 80% percent of the entire (total number of students) class score at least 80% of a score of

100 accuracy on the task • Scores of 79% of a score of 100 or below, indicate re-teaching until mastery is accomplished.

Acknowledgments This workbook is dedicated to the many who teach in inner city schools, who teach hope and nurture with great care, who model self-esteem and live kindness, and especially to my fellow associates at Thomas J. Rusk Middle School in Dallas, TX. It is with great appreciation that I acknowledge the work would not have been completed without the loving encouragement of my family; mother Mary, my sister and bother; Truey and Mark, my dear friends; Cheryl Herrick, Keith Waataja, and Joyce Ducas. They all believed in my true calling: teaching. Thank you Dad for watching over me all these years, giving me the strength to follow my heart.

Making Connections Park City School Enrollment The Park City Board of Education has surveyed all the middle schools and high schools in its district. High schools have a total enrollment of 3000 students in three schools. Each high school is next to a middle school. However, total enrollment in the 3 middle schools was only 2500 students. Specifically, North High School has 1000 students, South High has 1500 students and East High has only 500 students. In comparison, Moore Middle School (next to North) has 800 students, Park Middle School (next to East) has 1000 students, and City Middle School (next to South) has a total enrollment of 700. The Board would like to plan for growth in the five years and needs an analysis of this information. Practice

1. Draw a table of information. 2. Title and label the rows and columns. 3. Write the data in the table. 4. Then, write four observations in complete sentences about this information. 5. Draw a Line Graph using this data.
