1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: 8 Marks

They are once everywhere chirping and flapping their wings at the window sill, on the top of cupboards and on the branches of trees.. Where have all the little sparrows gone? This is most frequently asked question about sparrows these days.

The association between humans and the house sparrows dates back to several centuries and no other bird has been associated with humans on a daily basis like the house sparrows. It is a bird that evokes fond memories of childhood and add freshness to household through its presence. Many bird watchers and ornithologists recall with fondness how the house sparrows gave flight to their passion for observing birds. The nests of sparrows dotted almost every house in the neighbourhood as well as public places like bus stands and railway stations, where they lived in colonies and survived on food grains and tiny worms.

Unfortunately, the house sparrows have now become a disappearing species. Like all other plants and animals which were once abundant and are now facing an uncertain future, their numbers are also declining across their natural range. A study conducted by Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam highlighted the population of house sparrows fell by over 60 per cent even in the rural areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh .A survey conducted by the British Trust for Ornithology showed that house sparrows population in Britain has declined about 58 per cent since 1970.

Certainly there is no single reason for the decline of the house sparrow. Scientists and experts say that severe changes in the urban ecosystem in recent times have had tremendous impact on the population of house sparrows whose number is declining constantly. Mobile tower radiation and excessive use of chemical fertilizers are aggravating the problem and has been identified as potent sparrow killers.

There have been many theories put forward for the almost world- wide decline of the house sparrow .It is said that sparrow chicks, which require insect food for their survival in their early days have not been getting adequate supply from their parents. This has triggered large scale deaths of chicks leading to gradual decline of their population.

Urban landscape too ,has been dramatically altered over the years. Old houses with courtyards in front and backyard ,have made way for concrete multi-storeys, with little greenery. No longer are sparrows able to find the tiny nooks ,crannies and holes where they used to build their nests.

Typically Sparrows were never an issue of concern for us with their diminutive presence in our households. Perhaps , it is this diminutive presence because of which even their gradual disappearance has gone unnoticed. Mohd. Dilavar is rightly called the Sparrow Man Of India as he has been successful in drawing the attention of the world towards the declining number of house sparrows.

House sparrows are important bio- indicators and their decline is a grim reminder of the degradation of urban environment and the danger from it to the humans in the long run.

On the basis of your reading of the passage answer the following questions briefly:

1) Where could the sparrows be seen often in the past?

2) How long is the association of the house sparrows with humans?

3) What does the bird evoke in us?

4) Who are ornithologists?

5) What does the study conducted by Andhra University show?

6) What is the decline in the number of house sparrows in Britain?

7) What has triggered large scale deaths of chicks?

8) How is the decline of house sparrows not an auspicious sign?

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: 12 marks

1. The little Tramp, the unforgettable character Charlie Chaplin invented, was born purely by accident in 1960. While rushing to a film shoot in California, he grabbed clothes of other people who have left behind in the changing room. And when he emerged, he found he had created a personality everybody loved. A little boy in a bowler hat, a close fitting jacket, a cane, oversized shoes and a brush like moustache!

2. Before long, Chaplin found himself star that puzzled him, for he saw himself essentially as a shy British music hall comedian. The US acknowledged him as a king of silent film comedy. Soon, so did crowds all over the world.

3. But life was not always a laugh for Charles Spencer Chaplin. Both his parents were music hall artists, who separated when Charlie was young. His childhood was very sad, for his mother never earned enough to look after Charlie and his older brother, Sydney. Sometimes, Chaplin had to sleep on the streets and forage for food in the garbage.

4. Charlie took his first bow on stage when his mother made her last appearance. It happened when her voice broke during a song. Her son stepped on stage and sang a popular song. Thats when a star was born.

5. Through all these years of success, Charlie never forgot his troubled childhood. It made him recall a Christmas when he was denied two oranges and his bags of sweets for breaking a rule at the orphanage he went to after his mothers death. It would have broken his heart, if the other children had not offered him a share of theirs. Spontaneously, the adult Chaplin gifted the orphanage with a motion of picture machine and insisted that each child should have as many oranges and sweets as they pleased.
