IntroductionAbout 51 million people live in England and most

of them are largely concentrated in London. Like in any other capital city there are a lot of block of flats with modern flats and a lot of people prefer living there.

But people, who are more conservative and value the traditions of the country live in the countryside. The houses in the countryside are usually more expensive than the flats in big cities. I think it’s normal because when you live in the country, you pay not just for the house but for the marvelous views, fresh air and a possibility to spend your free time in the garden. To add to this, gardening is one of the most favourite hobbies among the British .

Introduction

In Great Britain different sorts of people live in different houses. Everything depends on money, work and social status. People in Great Britain can buy a house or rent it from local authority. Houses in Britain cost lots of money and they’re very expensive. Of course, many people prefer to have the own houses rather then to rent them but money is a very important problem for many families in Great Britain.

Types of British houses.English people live in different types of houses.

The main types of houses in England are:1) Detached ( a house not joined to another house ) 2) Semi – detached ( two houses joined together )3) Terraced ( several houses joined together )4) Flats ( apartments ) ( only 20% of the country’s households live in flats, often in the large cities ) According to the statistics Britain has the second lowest proportion of flat – dwellers in the EU. The lowest of it is in Ireland.

English people love their houses and apartments and they often say: <<East or West, Home is Best>> . Their houses are always comfortable and cosy, with all modern conveniences, central heating, cold and hot running water. There’s always a garden behind the house or in front of it.

A detached house.Detached houses are rather large. There’re

usually four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor. When you come in you can see a hall, there’s a big lounge where British people like having parties or just sitting and talking in front of the fireplace in the evenings. The kitchen is usually near the lounge. It’s so big that sometimes they can have meals there. There’re two small gardens behind the house and in front of it.

Block of flats.

In big cities people live in a very nice block of flats. Their flat can be small or large but

there’s always a hall, a bedroom, a kitchen, a toilet and a bathroom there. As usual there isn’t much furniture. You can see a sofa, a

desk, a wardrobe, a TV set, and a small coffee table in the room. There’s a soft carpet on the floor. The curtains are usually light. There’re

some pictures on the walls.

A typical British house

A typical British house is a brick house with rooms upstairs and downstairs and a garden. It has two

floors : the ground floor and the 1st floor. The front door which faces the street opens into the hall.

There’re usually two rooms on the ground floor : a dining room, a living room with wide windows

looking on to the garden. The kitchen is at the far end of the hall. There’re usually two or three

bedrooms on the 1st floor. The rooms upstairs are often very small that’s why there isn’t much

furniture in the rooms. Bedrooms are very private and they’re used for sleeping.

As a rule, the dining room is the most comfortable room in the house and it’s used all the time. The fireplace has always been the center of interest in the room. Englishmen are fond of of sitting round the fire talking, reading or just watching the flames. Above the fireplace you can see a shelf on which there’s a big beautiful clock and some photographs. There can be a painting or a mirror here. To add to this, every little detail, every little picture and every little vase of flowers can make the room cosy and special.

British homes have typical basic furniture –beds, tables, chairs, armchairs, cupboards, shelves, lamps, radios, television and compact DVD players. The kitchens and bathrooms are quite large and full of useful consumer goods. Many people have a microwave oven, a washing machine, a fridge, and a freezer for frozen food.

The British always try to make their homes better. They spend a lot of money and time to decorate

their homes and to buy furniture. They are interested in reading books, magazines etc. and there’s always a library in their house. They buy books about houses, furniture and gardening.

They love their houses and they spend much time there. It’s necessary to mention that Englishmen are fond of gardening. They like to grow plants

and look after them. Special attention is given to every bed of flowers, bush and tree.
