I’ve tried to give you the monthly play-by-play in this column, so I’ll spare you the post- race recap and skip straight to the color commentary. I learned a lot in this last year. But mostly the experience solidified something that I already knew: The Evansville Bar Association has over 500 amazing members and an exceptional staff. I was struck by their commitment to this legal community every month. The work our members do is unparalleled--from the CLEs that have been planned, developed, and taught to the social events that have been organized and attended. In these columns, I have identified 52 specific people who have significantly impacted the EBA. But those were just a sampling of many efforts. I’ve heard tale from other bar presidents of boards and members that were disengaged. That’s not a problem in Evansville. The work the staff does is also extraordinary. In her fifteen months here, Julie Moore Holtz—who had no prior familiarity with bar associations—has learned the business, began to overcome the challenge of the changing CLE landscape, embraced our traditions and improved upon them. With the help of excellent chairs, she has organized Evansville’s first regional mock trial and a beautiful Law Day celebration. Prior to interviewing for her position, Julie had watched several of the oral histories posted on our website and could reference them. It was evident to me at that time that she understood the importance of the stories of our members. While her ideas, work ethic, and organization have been tremendous assets, watching her build relationships with our membership has been one of the most fun and rewarding parts of this year. In October, the EBA hired Ashley Martin, who also quickly began learning the business. She has found new procedures and methods to make us more efficient than we already were. Her fresh perspective is a boost that I didn’t know that the bar needed until I saw it. With Julie and Ashley on staff, this bar will continue to excel. I’ve now hit the finish line. Incoming president, Sacha Armstrong has been warming up for this role by working diligently to improve diversity efforts within our organization over the last several years. She and the board will begin a strategic plan later this fall. They will also have the opportunity to show off our legal community at the national mock trial in May 2020. So I pass the baton. If you need me, I’ll be cheering from the bleachers.

This has been fun. And I’m glad it is over.

When I started this adventure, I told you that I had heard bar

leadership was like a relay. My goal was to take the baton from

Clay Havill and advance our position. When you run a race well,

you have just enough energy to make it to the end, leaving

everything you have on the course. I know I ran this race properly

because about a month ago, I started looking for the finish line and

hoping I would cross. As I prepare to hand the baton to Sacha

Armstrong, I hope you’re pleased with what the association has

done during this leg of the relay.

I’ve tried to give you the monthly play-by-play in this column, so I’ll spare you the post-

race recap and skip straight to the color commentary. I learned a lot in this last year. But

mostly the experience solidified something that I already knew: The Evansville Bar

Association has over 500 amazing members and an exceptional staff. I was struck by their

commitment to this legal community every month.

The work our members do is unparalleled--from the CLEs that have been planned,

developed, and taught to the social events that have been organized and attended. In

these columns, I have identified 52 specific people who have significantly impacted the

EBA. But those were just a sampling of many efforts. I’ve heard tale from other bar

presidents of boards and members that were disengaged. That’s not a problem in

Evansville.

The work the staff does is also extraordinary. In her fifteen months here, Julie Moore

Holtz—who had no prior familiarity with bar associations—has learned the business, began

to overcome the challenge of the changing CLE landscape, embraced our traditions

and improved upon them. With the help of excellent chairs, she has organized

Evansville’s first regional mock trial and a beautiful Law Day celebration. Prior to

interviewing for her position, Julie had watched several of the oral histories posted on our

website and could reference them. It was evident to me at that time that she understood

the importance of the stories of our members. While her ideas, work ethic, and

organization have been tremendous assets, watching her build relationships with our

membership has been one of the most fun and rewarding parts of this year.

In October, the EBA hired Ashley Martin, who also quickly began learning the business.

She has found new procedures and methods to make us more efficient than we already

were. Her fresh perspective is a boost that I didn’t know that the bar needed until I saw it.

With Julie and Ashley on staff, this bar will continue to excel.

I’ve now hit the finish line. Incoming president, Sacha Armstrong has been warming up for

this role by working diligently to improve diversity efforts within our organization over the

last several years. She and the board will begin a strategic plan later this fall. They will also

have the opportunity to show off our legal community at the national mock trial in May

2020.

So I pass the baton. If you need me, I’ll be cheering from the bleachers.

What’s in a number? Well, in the past month VLP has been reporting on the work of

EBA volunteers as part of its annual funding request to the Coalition for Court Access. In

2018 EBA volunteers reported providing 2,566 hours of service valued at $513,200. This

includes time on VLP cases as well as serving through Talk to a Lawyer, Teen Court, VITA, and

other projects. As part of that total, the following attorneys provided 50 or more hours in

2018: Bev Corn, Garland Cravens, Steve Culley, Mark Foster, Kevin Gibson, Tim Hambidge,

David Jones, Yvette Kirchoff, Jeff Kolb, Mark Miller, Katherine Rybak, Tracy Thread, Keith

Wallace, Susan Wilkie, and Scott Wylie. Of our paralegal volunteers Lauren Jones also

provided more than 50 hours of volunteer time. Thanks to all of them VLP screened 451

applicants and served over 600 Talk to a Lawyer callers. Big numbers!
