Portree projectSeamless Access in Gaelic – the smart way•A user of a public library in the Highland Libraries service browses the non-fiction collection on the shelves. Each shelf stack has a poster giving the DDC Summary numbers for that stack (or a single poster covering all Summary numbers) with captions in Scottish Gaelic and English. Against each set of numbers and captions is a QR code. •The user scans the code with their mobile phone, using a suitable app. The code is used to carry out an automatic search of the library's catalogue and displays books and other resources which would usually be found in the stack. The user is able to identify resources which are in circulation or otherwise not currently shelved, and resources which are difficult to see on the shelf, such as those with no spines, or in boxes, etc.•A Gaelic-speaking user of the library is able to appreciate the way that topics are arranged on the shelves and the terminology and arrangement of technical topics in their own language.•An English-speaking user of the library sees Gaelic translations of broad subject topics on every stack during every visit, acquires a working knowledge of several hundred Gaelic words, and is encouraged to study the language further.

Portree project• Widening access -Mobile squared!• A poster or set of posters giving the DDC Summary numbers and

captions in Scottish Gaelic and English with QR codes is displayed in the mobile libraries of Highland Libraries service. A user of the mobile library service is able to identify all the resources on a topic held by the service and arrange for specific resources to be included in the mobile browsing collection when the library next visits their location.

• Highland-wide promotion of the library service• A poster or set of posters with the Summary numbers, captions,

and QR codes is displayed on the notice boards of community centres, tourist information centres, and commercial premises throughout Highland region, with text promoting the use of the mobile and public libraries.
