Academics: High expectations with real opportunities
Middletown is in the third year of a four-year Race to the Top-District grant, which provides our students tremendous educa-tional opportunities. The district’s rigorous curriculum challenges students, and pushes them to be college and career ready. All programs meet New York state standards and requirements, and follow the district’s specific scope and sequence.
Students have many choices, aside from taking core courses. Classes are available in music, art and technology. Middletown offers National Academy Foundation programs, as well as Proj-ect Lead the Way: Biomedical and Engineering. Our College and Career Center helps our high school students chart their post-high school path. There’s no need to wait for college to take college classes. Students can “attend” Syracuse University from MHS, with a chance to earn more than 50 college credits.
Student registration information: All new students register through the central registration office, located at 223 Wisner Ave., Mid-dletown. Registration hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Call (845) 326-1300 or 326-1301 and make an appointment.
Two-way dual language education: The two-way dual language program is in its sixth year, and its students will attend Maple Hill. Two languages for instruction are used for all students. The goal is to develop high levels of literacy in both languages, with aca-demic performance in both languages at - or above - grade level. We encourage students to demonstrate positive cross-cultured attitudes and behaviors. They use each language on alternating days. An “A” day is English instruction. A “B” day is Spanish instruction.

Athletics: Interscholastic sports vital to education processMiddletown athletics continue to rise, thanks to facilities compa-rable to a college campus. The Faller Field complex features an IAAF-certified track facility, FIFA 1-STAR field and a state-of-the-art, high-definition video scoreboard. Middletown has hosted seven high school state championship competitions, which combined have, conservatively, generated more than $5 million into the local economy. In November, Middletown will host the boys’ soccer finals for the sixth straight year. Middletown will host the boys’ lacrosse state championships in June.
Middletown captured the Section 9 Class AA boys’ basketball title and reached the state quarterfinals. Vanessa Babcock set the school’s single-season lacrosse scoring record with 63 goals. The baseball and softball teams reached the sectional tournament semifinals. Rochelle Williams set a school record in the OCIAA championships, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.12 seconds, the fastest time in at least 30 years. She finished third at the state meet. Pedro Rosales won a sectional wrestling cham-pionship at 113 pounds. The football team had its first winning season since 2001, including a dramatic last-second victory over Port Jervis for the Erie Bell.
Middletown choses “Athletes of the Month.” The recipients receive a certificate, and recognition on our website. ShopRite displays their picture, and their names are on a plaque there. Our website: www.middletowncityschools.org has important forms and information, including athletic and academic rules and policies.

Fine Arts: Enhancing educationChildren can unleash their creativity in our music and vi-sual arts programs, through quality instruction, electives and after-school activities. They perform and have work on display in front of large and appreciative audiences. Some students emerge as some of the county, state and nation’s best.
Students in grades K-5 receive weekly music and art classes from certified teachers, enabling kids to develop their interest and appreciation. Children explore music of differ-ent styles and cultures through a variety of extracurricular groups like marching band, percussion ensemble, steel drums and pipe and drums. Orchestra is available begin-ning in third grade, band beginning in fourth grade. Sixth-graders can learn guitar skills, while seventh-graders learn piano (keyboard). The Middletown Arts Institute is part of the high school’s academy program and includes fine arts, music and dance.
Students can perform music - vocally or instrumentally - at NYSSMA festivals, where they are judged and given feed-back by professional judges. Hundreds of art students in grades 7-12 have been recognized at the annual Scholas-tic Art Awards, a regional competition based at SUNY New Paltz.
Arts in Education programs raise student achievement and narrow the gap in student performance. Our kids partici-pate with professional artists, writers and poets.
