1 | Elementary Courses Grades K-6

Advanced Band 6-8Students in this class will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, and be able to move their playing to a higher level by learning challenging and varied music. This class will perform in band and full orchestra groupings that will be showcased in an evening concert at the conclusion of the session. Other fun activities will support acquisition of music theory, note-reading skills, and music history appreciation. For wind and percussion students with at least two years of playing experience on their instrument. $325/$350

Advanced Orchestra 5-8Students will learn a variety of challenging musical pieces and will participate in both string and full orchestra ensemble. Other class activities include learning music theory, music history, and note-reading through a variety of fun group activities. Students will perform in an evening concert at the conclusion of the session. For students who have at least two years of playing experience on violin, viola, cello, or string bass (advanced level fifth grade students may be placed in the Intermediate Orchestra based upon possible instrumentation needs of that group). $325/$350

Angels Science of Baseball 4-6The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim has partnered with IPSF to enhance students’ love of learning and baseball. This class skillfully combines America’s favorite pastime with math, language arts, science, history, health, and physical education. Exclusive interactions with current Angels staff, common core aligned academic activities, hands-on baseball experiences, tickets to an Angels game, and the opportunity to win Angels merchandise are included in this action-packed class. $350/$375

Art & Architecture 1-2, 3-4Part math, part science, and part art, this class combines the fascinating worlds of art and architecture as students design and create building-themed 2D and 3D projects. Students will examine iconic works of architecture while practicing architectural techniques such as creating models using assorted materials, drafting building plans, constructing LEGO® and K'NEX structures, and more. Learn about scale, symmetry, proportion, and geometry while also painting pictures of famous buildings and beautiful landscapes that

incorporate art techniques such as perspective, shading, and attention to detail. $350/$375

Art-rageous: Fine Art & Sculpture1-2, 3-4, 5-6Students will explore many different art media in this class, including 2D and 3D art. Using a variety of materials including charcoal, watercolor, paint, paper maché, clay, wire, and more, students will learn important artistic techniques such as perspective, shading, detail work, weaving, and molding. In this hands-on class, students will create beautiful paintings, intricate sculptures, and fabulous crafts inspired by the works of famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Sonia King, and Claude Monet. $350/$375

NEW! Artsy Cooking 3-4In this scrumptious and artistic class, students will tantalize their taste buds and have fun with crafts! Students will make different recipes each day while also making beautiful works of art. Learn the math of measuring, nutrition, dining etiquette, and cooperation skills while creating delicious meals the whole family can enjoy. Create various art projects while the food is cooking, including woven baskets, sculptures, paintings, and more. Not recommended for students with severe food allergies. $350/$375

The Artist & the Writer 1-2Students will use their visual abilities to enhance writing skills through art. This art-based learning approach encourages creativity by using various art mediums such as watercolor, tempera, and oil pastels to express poetry and short stories. Using the five senses and descriptive figurative language, student’s writing will come alive! $325/$350

Art Workshop 1-2, 3-4, 4-6A fun-filled class of art projects, art movies, and art history! Students will create 2D projects using oil pastels, paints, collage, watercolor, and marker. 3D projects will be created with clay, paper maché, and fabric. Hone in on your inner artist and enjoy all the creative projects this class has to offer! $350/$375

Cheer & Pom 101 4-6We’ve got spirit yes we do, we’ve got spirit how about you? This class is perfect for spirited students who are interested in gaining new skills or perfecting existing technique. An introduction to the basics of cheer and pom will boost students’ spirit and confidence! Class activities will include strength, flexibility, and endurance exercises as well as the memorization of cheer/pom choreography and a mock tryout at the completion of the class. $325/$350

NEW! Code Academy: Robotics & 2D Game Development 3-4In this creative and coding-focused class, students will learn to build games and program robots using visual block-based coding. Using code and lots of creativity, students will create animated stories and amazing 2D games. They will learn the art of game design by creating their own versions of Nintendo classics like Super Mario and Zelda, and explore the versatile LEGO® Mindstorm robotics system by building and programming custom robots to solve a wide array of challenges. The programming concepts learned transfer to traditional languages such as Python, Java, and C#. Each project introduces new concepts that are both engaging and educational!$400/$425

NEW! Coding for Kids 2-3Welcome to the world of computer science! In this class, students build incredible projects like their own coloring and drawing applications, digital music instruments, fun computer games, beautiful animations and so much more. NEW! Coding for Kids 4-6Bring your imagination to life through code - the language that humans use to create amazing things on computers! In this class, students will learn how to create everything from colorful computer art to complex multiplayer computer games. Students will also work together in teams to create their very own applications with code, and compete with classmates in fun team activities for awesome prizes! Master complicated coding concepts, learn how to safely use technology, and have a blast turning dreams into reality with code! $375/$400

Cooking & Crafts 3-4Learn basic cooking skills, hand-sewing, knitting, and other fun, hands-on crafts. Create simple meals that can be eaten in class as well as craft projects that can be taken home. Cooking activities will include preparing nutritious snacks and meals while learning about why it's important to eat healthy. Craft activities will include weaving, knitting, sewing, string art, jewelry making, and creating pom creatures. Not recommended for students with severe food allergies. $350/$375

Basketball, tennis, and volleyball will be combined to give students the chance to learn the rules and essential skills for each sport, along with vital life lessons such as respect and teamwork. NEW! Cultures Around the World 4-6Hola, Konnichiwa, Guten Tag, Salam Alaikum, Namaste! Join us for a journey around the world as we explore the cultures of different countries including, but not limited to Spain, Japan, Germany, Egypt, India, and Brazil. Students will learn about various aspects of these cultures including their music, food, games, art, and more. Learn how to cook main dishes from different parts of the world, create works of art inspired by their famous artists and styles, build models of famous landmarks and architectural feats, understand different cultural norms, and come to appreciate the beauty and diversity in our world. $350/$375

NEW! Cursive & Calligraphy 3-4, 4-6Explore the lost art of beautiful handwriting! This introductory class teaches cursive handwriting and decorative calligraphy using calligraphy pens and a variety of special papers. Learn how to perfect upper and lower case letter formation and increase student’s fine motor skills and stamina. Artistic creativity will be encouraged while creating handwritten poems, notes, and placards. $325/$350

Dance Technique & Choreography 3-6 Learn how to use dance as a creative means of self-expression. Students will explore different styles of dance such as hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, African, and ballet. With a concentration on basic vocabulary, movement, coordination, and memorization, students will use what they have learned to create their own unique dances. At the end of the session, students will perform what they have learned and choreographed for friends and family.$325/$350

NEW! DIY Learning 4-6For today’s creative classroom, DIY Creative Learning combines students’ imagination with hands-on lessons and projects that visually come to life. Students will explore making projects to enhance their understanding of specific principles related to traditional games (e.g., Chess), 3D (e.g., cube puzzles) and animation (e.g., Zoetropes). There are ample opportunities to personalize projects and keep as handmade creations. This is a digital-free class that leverages Ellison® Education’s 40 years of proven hands-on learning techniques and programs to make learning fun, unique and memorable. $350/$375

Drawing Fundamentals 5-6“See” and “draw” as an artist. Increase artistic skills, expand creativity, and develop confidence through proven drawing methodologies. Drawing exercises include contour drawing, drawing “upside-down” (really!), daily “quick” drawings, and using grids to compose a picture. By the end of this class, students should see a dramatic increase in the quality of their drawing and artistic skills. $350/$375

English Language Academy K-1Through sheltered English language development, students will improve their vocabulary, grammar, phonics, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. With the use of songs, chants, picture cards, and books, students will gain more English and school-related skills. This class is not intended for native (fluent) English speakers. $325/$350

English Language Academy 1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6This class is designed to help elementary students improve their command of the English language in order to be more successful in the classroom. Students will receive direct instruction and participate in a range of activities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency. Instruction and activities will be tailored to address the varied proficiency levels of participants. This class is not intended for native (fluent) English speakers. $325/$350

Fearless Fourth Graders Students will enter fourth grade fearlessly after completing this class. Students will review critical reading, writing and math skills learned in third grade and walk away with the confidence they need for success in fourth grade. $325/$350

NEW! Field Sports K-2, 3-6This multi-sport class is designed to introduce athletes to a variety of sports in one setting. Golf, flag football and soccer will be combined to give students the chance to learn the rules and essential skills for each sport, along with vital life lessons such as respect and teamwork. Fly into First Grade A full day of school is right around the corner for your student! Help them fly into first grade by enriching their skills in letters, numbers, writing, and reading. Focusing on the basics and social skills will help your student transition successfully this fall. $325/$350

NEW! French Immersion 4-6Learn the basics of the French language through fun vocabulary, songs, and videos. Students will develop comprehension and speaking skills through conversations and hands-on learning activities in this engaging class. $325/$350

Full STEAM Ahead 4-6, 5-6Develop mastery of select Next Generation Science Standards through this well-rounded STEAM class. Students will be exposed to several forms of programming language, Maker Labs, experiments, construction (and deconstruction), and innovation. Use Scratch to recreate scenes from movies and books, learn how changing code can alter games and animations via Khanacademy, and program Dash robots and LEGO® Mindstorm robots. In addition, students will deconstruct mechanical and electric toys, and make things using conductors, batteries, LEDs, cardboard, motors, solar panels, and more. Students will reflect on their growth through a digital journal on Google Drive. $375/$400

Gamemaker: Coders & Creators 5-6Throughout this class, students will learn to design and develop video games using graphical drag and drop interfaces that make coding simple and easy to under-stand for those new to programming. Students will use cutting-edge game development software that introduces them to the world of game development by having them design their own game levels. They will also be introduced to coding concepts such as functions and conditional statements by learning to create their own additions to the game. The class will learn how to incorporate art and electronics into their game design by building circuits to control a game and using art to bring their game to life. Students will then learn the knowledge of game and character design to create their own mobile game. $400/$425

Gamemaker: 3D Game Development & Virtual Reality 5-6This class will explore all aspects of game design from controller design and clay modeling to 3D character design and building your own VR game. Program Arduino controllers to control games and learn the essential elements of character design by exploring both clay and 3D modeling. Students will create their own game using Unity, a professional 3D game design engine, before immersing themselves in virtual reality. Students will learn C#, develop problem-solving skills, explore sculpting and gain an excellent general knowledge of game creation.$400/$425

Gametime 1-3Students will use logic and problem-solving to strategically compete with classmates while enjoying a variety of popular games such as Scrabble, Life, Checkers, Chess, Monopoly, Connect Four, dominoes, and common card games. Fun academic games and low-impact outdoor activities will also be interspersed with board games. Students will enjoy good-natured competition and weekly tournaments. $325/$350

Genius Hour 5-6Genius Hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and become experts in anything! In this student-centered approach, they will conduct their own research and create a product that will be shared with their class. This is an extremely rewarding and uniquely personalized learning experience that encourages lifelong learning and creativity.$325/$350

NEW! Global Art 3-4Travel the world through art. Students will virtually visit different countries from around the world while exploring their geography and culture through hands-on art projects. We will make Day of the Dead masks from Mexico, fish prints from the South Seas, and carp kites from Japan, and many other projects. Each student will create a portfolio filled with the artwork they have created while learning about the world.$350/$375

Google ’Round the World 3-4Students will explore different parts of the world and demonstrate their knowledge using Google Apps. Students will create documents, presentations, drawings, and maps to present their discoveries. Along the way, students will increase their typing accuracy, learn useful formatting elements, and learn how to use creativity to share information. $325/$350

Hands on STEAM K Kindergartners love to explore the world through their five senses and learn best by doing. Hands on STEAM K is a fun, developmentally appropriate class where students will get to experience hands-on activities in the areas of science, engineering, art, and math with technology interwoven throughout the class. Your student will explore, build,

experiment, create, and learn while having fun doing it. This class is the perfect accompaniment to Jump Start Kindergarten, but can also be taken on its own.$350/$375

Intermediate Band 6Wind students will learn new skills and techniques to take their playing to the next level. Students will perform in band and full orchestra groupings that will be showcased in an evening concert at the conclusion of the session. Other fun class activities will support acquisition of music theory, note-reading skills, and music history appreciation. For wind students entering sixth grade with at least one year of playing experience on their instrument. $325/$350

Intermediate Orchestra 5Students will build on skills and techniques learned in their first year of playing and advance their playing through challenging and varied orchestra repertoire. This class will perform in string and full orchestra in an evening concert at the end of the session. Other class activities include learning music theory, music history, and note-reading through fun activities. For incoming fifth graders with at least one year of playing experience on violin, viola, cello, or string bass. $325/$350

Jewelry, Design & Craft Creation 1-3Students will make jewelry, bags, outfits, crafts, and other accessories using a variety of materials in this creative class. Among the items created are bracelets, necklaces, pins, rings, purses, scarves, hats, and more. Students will look at the works of famous fashion experts as they make different outfits from concept to completion. Student will become design experts as they create their own styles, head to toe. $350/$375

Jump Start Kindergarten Prepare your child for Kindergarten by leaping into their school experience before fall even starts! Students will be exposed to Kindergarten curriculum, classroom rules, and social and behavioral expectations. Students will focus on introductory reading, writing and mathematical awareness through the use of manipulatives and games. Send your Kindergartener to school with the tools they need to succeed. $325/$350

Kinderfun! Summer is all about non-stop fun and that’s what your Kindergartener will get from this engaging class! Students will build social skills, establish friendships, and ease into a school environment all while participating in activities like art, reading, board games, sports, technology, and singing. This recreational and lightly-academic class is designed to complement Jump Start Kindergarten, but students are welcome to enroll only in this class. $325/$350

Launching into Space 4-6Do you have an interest in learning more about astronauts and space? Well this is the class for you! Students will launch into the history of NASA, build rockets, learn the science of rocketry and even get to see lunar and meteorite samples. This is a complete hands-on learning science class. Students will observe moon rock, participate in the Sally Ride EarthKam, learn how astronauts survive, and engage in activities about how large the solar system actually is! $350/$375

LEGO® Engineering: Evolution of Engineering 1-2Ready, Set, LEGO®! Students discover engineering, physics, and architectural concepts by building castles, catapults, and other medieval machinery. Students will travel to modern times and create amazing motorized machines, including two-wheel drive racers and gravity-defying hill climbers. Students will then take a voyage to the stars and build 4x4 mega-machines capable of navigating even the toughest Martian terrain! Students will test out their designs at the end of each day through a series of fun and educational challenges. This class gives LEGO® lovers a great foundation that not only applies to real-world engineering, but also enables creative young minds to build their ideas with confidence and skill. $375/$400

LEGO® Engineering: Jedis & Superheroes 1-2Our LEGO® Engineers will design and create amazing vehicles, contraptions, and creatures! Create an amazing Superhero City, complete with Hero’s hideouts and Villain’s lairs! Make amazing motorized machines, including tumblers, zip line aerial ascenders, and even super weapons, then battle it out against the bad guys! Next, students travel to a galaxy far, far

away and race podracers through Tatooine, create motorized Sandcrawlers to search for droids, maneuver Speeder Bikes through trees, and control AT-AT’s on Hoth as they help each side in the battle between the Rebels and the Empire. Engineers will explore motors, engineering, architecture, and all things LEGO®!!$375/$400

NEW! Let’s Get Coding 1-2Build logical thinking and problem solving skills with this introduction to coding class. Students will practice coding with sites such as Tynker, Kodable and Code.org. Students will play coding board games, explore Osmo Coding and program Dash robots. $350/$375

Math Matters 5-6Tackle math concepts while learning about the stock market. Students will track their gains or losses to the penny using decimals and percent on a daily basis and practice different graphing techniques to visualize progress. $325/$350

NEW! Minecraft University: Robotics, Redstone & Rockets 3-4In this class, students will explore programming, robotics, electronics and rocketry in both the virtual world of Minecraft and in the physical world through hands-on projects. Learn to program a virtual robot within Minecraft and then apply those skills in programming a real LEGO® Mindstorm robot. Create complete circuitry and electronics using Minecraft Redstone then build real-world circuits to bring your amazing contraptions to life. Break the chunky bonds of gravity and launch into space in Minecraft, then design your own air and water-powered rockets before launching them hundreds of feet in the air!$400/$425

Mock Trial, Debate & Drama 4-6Are you a person of passion and conviction with a love for critical thinking, dialogue, and acting? In this class, students learn to use logic and other rhetorical tools to make compelling arguments and to express themselves through the performing arts. Students will learn to walk and talk with assuredness and purpose, become comfortable with memorization, overcome jitters, deliver speeches with confidence and animation, and practice acting and improvisation!

Examine famous court cases and well-known stories to decide who was really at fault and take on roles such as defendant, prosecutor, judge, and jury. Learn life skills while participating in debates and mock trials, practicing skits, and preparing for the end of the session performance for friends and family. $350/$375

Movie Making Magic: Animation & Special FX 2-3, 4-6Ever wanted to make a movie? Create your own stop motion animation movies and live action special FX movies. Work collaboratively to create your own original story using LEGOS ® and learn the art of stop motion animation! Students will have the freedom to create something totally original, or try a spin-off of Star Wars, Minecraft, or The LEGO® Movie. Next, become a Hollywood-style director, writer, and actor to create a movie where you are the star, and add cool special FX. Finally, return to animation with clay characters that you design and animate in the spirit of movies like Boxtrolls, Paranorman, and Shaun the Sheep. At the end of the class students will have three movies to show off to friends and family! $400/$425

Musical Theater 3-6This class will focus on developing vocal and acting techniques for the musical theater style. All students will be cast in an age-appropriate musical production, which will be performed at the end of the session. To enhance their acting skills, the students will play games, improvise, and perform skits. They will also learn about the audition process, vocal projection, tone, and singing style. Students will be given the opportunity to design the set and props for the musical. They will get a taste of all musical theater aspects! $325/$350

Novels & Numbers 4-6The exciting world of novels and numbers guides students in this class as they grasp a wide-range of new skills. Students will explore essential math skills and concepts while reading a novel to promote vocabulary, comprehension, and written responses. $325/$350

Oceans 5-8Similar to a junior lifeguard program, this class covers all aspects of the ocean including marine biology, ocean recreation, beach safety, and physical oceanography. Seven of the fourteen class meetings, extended to 1:30 p.m., will be held at the beach. Three additional classes will include a visit to Pirate Coast Paddle Company for an introduction to stand up paddling in Newport’s Back Bay, a visit to Ocean Institute in Dana Point where students will board the R/V Sea Explorer for a 2-hour marine wildlife cruise, and a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Students will have the opportunity to snorkel in a kelp forest, surf, body surf, and fish. Classroom activities investigate the special adaptations of the ocean’s animals as well as experimentation with the physical dynamics of tides, waves, and ocean currents. Students must be able to swim in the ocean and will be tested. Includes lab fees, field trip transportation, and equipment. $400/$425

Public Speaking & Debate 4-6Master your speaking skills and become confident in front of a crowd by using speech and debate techniques. Students will recite speeches from works of published literature and poetry, and also use technology to research people and events that they will present to their peers. $325/$350

Read, Write & Publish 2-3, 4-6Imagine one day reading all about a land far, far away, and then learning about what whales eat. Students will do just that

as they read a wide range of literature from fantasy to nonfiction. This class is for students who love to read, write, and share their own work! Students will also learn about the world of publishing and get the opportunity to publish their own work using traditional and/or online tools. Students will accomplish many different writing projects that not only review important skills but introduce them to new styles and formats. $325/$350

Science Explosion 1-2, 3-4, 5-6Have you ever wondered what it means to think like a scientist? All you need is curiosity and an eagerness to learn how the world works. Students will explore a wide-variety of scientific fields including biology, astronomy, engineering, and chemistry in this hands-on class. Students will conduct experiments and work on projects including building rockets, robots and bridges, exploring electricity and magnetism, observing chemical reactions and physical changes, and so much more as they practice the Scientific Method. Science is all around us, so let’s jump in and have some fun! Activities and lessons will vary in difficulty for older students. This class is a combination of Building/Budding Scientists and Chem Kids/Chem Pros from 2016.$375/$400

Serve & Learn 5-6Engage in project-based service learning opportunities and learn how to make a difference in the world! Students will use real-world math, reading, communication, and critical thinking skills to research and create projects for different charities. Some projects may include: making a no-sew fleece blanket for children in crisis, designing handmade cards for newly diagnosed cancer patients, and making a cooling neck tie for a member of the military to beat the desert heat. In addition to these projects, we will incorporate a novel in our study that shows kids have a voice and that they are capable of making a difference that leaves a legacy for future generations. Students will develop digital citizenship by sharing their class experience via social media so that parents and other community members can be involved.$325/$350

Showstoppers 1-2Does your child like to sing, dance, or perform, even when nobody is watching? If so, then he/she will enjoy the

opportunity to join other students as they learn and perform simple dance routines, and sing along to some of their favorite songs from contemporary and classic musicals. Students will have fun while building their confidence, coordination, and stage presence. No experience necessary. Students will participate in a performance for friends and family at the end of the session. $325/$350

Sports Science 5-6Love sports? This class will explore the sports world through the lens of science. Learn about the science behind your favorite sports (and play them!) in this exciting class. Students will study the physics behind a wide-range of sports and the basics of how our bodies perform in those sports. How do soccer balls "bend", baseballs curve, basketballs bounce, muscles move, and hearts pump? The scientific method will be employed to discover better ways to understand sports and perform in them. $350/$375

NEW! STEAM Studio: Codeflyers Flight School 5-6Build it. Code it. Fly it. This class is designed to introduce, excite and inspire students to the wonders of flight. Jump into our flight school and discover how to build, program and fly drones. Create hoverboards, quad racers, and drone dragsters and then take to the skies and learn to pilot your new creation. Discover how to use code and algorithms to give your drone a mind of its own as you race against a friend or even have an epic air battle. Create water or air powered rockets and launch them hundreds of feet in the air! The sky is the limit! Students will learn through hands-on projects about lift, drag, inertia, gravity, friction and more before blasting off. Designing, building and flying is STEAM at its very best!$400/$425

NEW! STEAM Studio: Engineering & Robotics 5-6Top of the line 3D printing and robotics technology introduces students to inventing in a fun and engaging way. Students will explore engineering and delve into what it takes to create their own products and inventions. By teaching with 3D printing, students now have an opportunity to bring their ideas to life. Using 3D software, students will design virtual inventions and then print them out into real-world objects using a 3D printer.

The class will then explore engineering and robotics using the advanced VEX robotics system. VEX is a versatile system designed to offer students an educational and exciting introduction to the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math. During the class, our engineers will fabricate complex robotics systems to solve numerous engineering problems before going head to head against other robots in exciting and educational engineering competitions. $400/$425

Success in Second Grade Steer your child into a successful start to their second grade year! Students will conquer a variety of math and language arts skill-building activities. Reading fluency, writing skills, math facts, time, and money will all be studied during this class. $325/$350

Taking Over Third GradeGive your child the tools they need to take third grade head on. Students will review critical reading, writing and math skills learned in second grade and further develop skills needed for third grade. $325/$350

Top Chef 4-6In this exciting class, students will learn the basics of cooking while having fun! Students explore different recipes each week and work together to create simple meals they can recreate at home. Oceans 5-8Similar to a junior lifeguard program, this class covers all aspects of the ocean including marine biology, ocean recreation, beach safety, and physical oceanography. Seven of the fourteen class meetings, extended to 1:30 p.m., will be held at the beach. Three additional classes will include a visit to Pirate Coast Paddle Company for an introduction to stand up paddling in Newport’s Back Bay, a visit to Ocean Institute in Dana Point where students will board the R/V Sea Explorer for a 2-hour marine wildlife cruise, and a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Students have the opportunity to snorkel in a kelp forest, surf, body surf, and fish. Movie Makers Camp 3-6With over 200 acres of the Outdoor Education Center (OEC) as the background, this filmmaking camp challenges students to tell a story with moving images. Instructors, provided by BrainStorm STEM Education, will provide expert guidance in what it takes to understand and create a film. From cinematography techniques and language, to the process of filmmaking, this class is perfect for students who love movies and want a chance to understand filmmaking from behind the scenes. Students will participate in dozens of hands-on activities including storyboarding, screenwriting, acting, and making a movie! Students will be able to download their movie to share with friends and family. OEC activities include hiking, geocaching, zip line, low ropes challenge, swimming, climbing wall, and more!
