Welcome back for Term 3. We hope all students can build on the results shown in the Semester 2 reports.
The big event for this term at MSB is NAIDOC Day. To give you more reasons to come, we have made Friday Aug 30 a
holiday, so those coming to NAIDOC can have a long weekend from Friday 30th Aug to Sunday 1st September.
This will give us all a break, and then back for the last three weeks of exam preparation & exams.
On either Wed 28th August or Thursday 29th August accommodation at MSB would be possible for about 15 people -
available to the first 15 people to contact us, if you wish to stay the night before or after NAIDOC Day.
From Monday 12th August to Friday 16th August, Year 9 will have their 5 day expedition and Year 10 Work Experience.
Year 10 will commence their expedition on Friday 30th August to Thursday 5th September, so no long weekend for Year
10. They will have a long weekend from Friday 6th September to Sunday 8th September.
In this newsletter are listed our teaching plans for classes commencing in 2014.
As you can see, we are continuing to aim for class sizes of 10 to 12 students, so that the work in each class is at a suitable
level for each student to progress from their starting point. Programs are being developed for accelerated/catchup
education for all. - Br Bill Tynan

YEAR 10
Thank you to all year 10 students and parents who have completed the Subject Selection process for year 10s
moving into year 11 in 2014. It is a valuable time during which important choices are made about student
pathways into their future. It is also a timely reminder that study in the senior school relies on a certain
level of Literacy and Numeracy to be able to access different courses. We also have prerequisites for
academic subjects, which are listed in the Subject Selection Handbook. Please familiarise yourself with these learning
guidelines, to ensure you are on the right track to enter year 11 on your chosen pathway.
Yr 12 - QTAC
During the next week all year 12 students will be given this year’s QTAC Guide, and we will be discussing the process of
applying for further study in 2014. QTAC is now open for applications online, and will close for ‘on time’ applications on
the 27th September 2013. I encourage you to discuss the varying options available for your student in light of this QTAC
information, and courses available – remembering that you also apply to TAFE through QTAC. If you have any queries
about this process, please don’t hesitate to contact me, as each year brings a variety of changes to the system.
I have asked students to talk through this information with their parents and carers, and come in together to discuss the
process further with myself, settle on your shortlist of courses, and/or to finalise your application. Please make a time
through the office, so that we can work through all possible options.
I have also been discussing future options with each year 12 student, and will be directing specific information to students as
it comes into the college.
YEAR 8
Towards the end of term we will be talking to our year 8 students about their future planning and subject selection for year
9, 2014. We will be asking students to select elective choices for next year. Please take the opportunity over the next few
weeks to discuss options with your students, and link them to their strengths and areas of interest.
Term 3 Assessment
All students will be sitting exams and submitting their assignments through their classes in weeks 10 and 11, with senior Exam
Block Tuesday 17th – Thursday 19
th September. Senior students will be required to attend school on these days, with classes
running while not in exams. All junior classes will continue with their lesson times to enable students to complete all of their
assessment. An Assessment Schedule and Exam Block Schedule will be published in the next few weeks.
A reminder to all students and their carers also – Assessment is to be handed in on the due date, as per QSA requirements. If
an extension is requested, it must be done well prior to the due date of the assessment piece, and be based on extenuating
circumstances. If you are absent on the due date, a medical certificate is required. In all other circumstances student work
will be graded on the due date with the information within the teacher’s possession at the time (this means – make sure you
hand in your rough drafts for feedback!). Some consideration is able to be attributed by teachers in years 8 – 10, however
the QSA guidelines are very specific for senior students. The Semester Assessment Calender is attached to this newsletter, for
your information.
Many thanks, Mrs Janine Conolly

MSB Athletics Carnival 2013
Congratulations Augustines!! ‘Gussies’ were the champion house for MSB’s 2013 athletics
carnival, winning both the overall standings and ‘House Spirit’ awards. It was a tremendous
effort, especially given the large delays experienced due to poor weather.
The 2013 carnival was conducted over two days and (in the end) two terms. The first day
saw athletes pushed to their limits as they competed in the vast majority of track and field
disciplines. The final rotation of field events was finally completed in Week 2 of Term 3.
Congratulations to all who participated over the two days; the spirit and determination showed by many students certainly
did not go unnoticed. A special congratulation’s to the Age Champions and to those students who were selected to represent
the school at the District athletics carnival. Well done to all participants, and good luck to those students competing in the
next levels of competitions.

Interschool Touch Football Competition
Students from Grade 8,9,10 and 11 have joined to make an OPEN Touch Team.
This team had its first game at the Ather-ton International club last Wednesday. Our players braved the GIANT Year 12’s from Mareeba and only went down 8-4.
Congratulations to these players. We’re looking forward to the rest of the season.

Proper Solid Fun - by Bradley Lyall Year 11
On the 12th
July 2013, a small group of senior students travelled to Cairns to participate in a script reading of “Proper Solid
Play”. Jute Theatre Company has developed this script which celebrates the achievements of aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Queenslanders. The script will be produced as a full stage production at the beginning of the 2014 theatre season at
the Jute Theatre Company space and all students have been invited back to enjoy the production.
As part of the creative process, this year during NAIDOC week students listened to actor’s workshopping scenes, gave
feedback, asked questions, met the playwright, Steven Oliver, set designers, actors and director.
The students gained new insights on how theatre works. The final discussion about setting goals and achieving them was
inspirational. We all agreed (even the exchange students from Europe) that family figures significantly in in our future dreams
ant theatre is a powerful space to express our indigenous culture. Bradley Lyall Year 11
