Murray State University is re-defining what it means to go to college. Each new day brings a whole new world of possibilities. There are barriers to be broken, envelopes to be pushed and ideas to be challenged. These are the things that turn a good education into a great one and a student into a success story. This is where great minds are cultivated and ambition is built without the limitations of an average education.

I’ve actually progressed and grown as a person with each year at Murray State. I’m sure a lot of students first coming into college, like myself, worry about fitting in. But I’ve had the opportunity to build some strong friendships, while being able to have an enjoyable social life.

In the heart of Jackson’s PurchaseMurray State University is located in the city of Murray in West Kentucky, a spot that was designated one of the “friendliest towns in America.” With Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley only a short car ride away, outdoor adventure is never in short supply. At MSU, you will find a close community of friendship and support, both on campus and in the city.

In a nutshell

Finest place I knowHistoric buildings and high-tech facilities blend together on Murray State’s tree-lined campus for the best of both worlds. As you focus on excelling academically, MSU’s campus serves as a community designed around student needs with its many amenities and facilities.

Founded in 1922 by Rainey T. Wells, Murray State University made its mark as Murray State Normal School, answering the call for high quality teacher training schools in Kentucky. Building strong character and cultivating bold ideas, word of the university’s rigorous academic opportunities spread, creating a reputation of excellence. One building led to 10, which eventually led to all 59, and while dozens of students became thousands, the campus continued to grow under the guidance of 13 proud presidents.

It is not what the people of Murray have promised to do, but what they have already done that counts. – Rainey T. Wells First president of Murray State University

Average Class Size

Student/Teacher Ratio

With record enrollment increasing each year, Murray State continues to successfully balance its classroom sizes. Students often find themselves in small classes, with an average student/teacher ratio of 16:1. That means more opportunities for questions, one-on-one conversations and hands-on experiences.

11,000 connections to be made

A special community built around youMaking its way from Cambridge, England, to the U.S. in the 1930s, residential colleges allow a campus to connect through active communities. Murray State’s own Residential College System has a personalized atmosphere that will have you interacting with faculty and peers, and provide you with a stimulating living-learning environment resulting in greater academic success, graduation rates and lasting friendships.

Each college’s residence hall features its own events, intramural teams and traditions for students to experience. MSU was the first public institution in the country to adopt the idea in 1996.

I’ve always been involved in something at whatever age, wherever I go. In high school I was already certain that I wanted to study agriculture, so coming to Murray State has actually reaffirmed my goals and the personality strengths that I’ve always had. If anything, I’ve learned that I am sure MSU was the right choice for me.
