What is a Local Area Network?
A local area network, or LAN, is a geographically limited communication network intended for the local transport of voice, data, and video.
A LAN can take many forms. From a small in-building network designed to connect employees in a small business, to a large installation connecting elements in a medical or university campus, a reliable and future-ready LAN is critical to the overall success of its owner.
Local Area NetworksCorning is a leader in network technology, and we have transformed the way our customers’ LANs have been designed and deployed.
On the following pages, you’ll find information on the three major product components most often included in LAN design: cable, hardware, and connectivity.
Corning Optical Communications Enterprise Networks EMEA Playbook | LAN-1765-BEN | Page 5
Cable selection is critical in the LAN. Our extensive cable product portfolio allows for one manufacturer for all network segments, regardless of environment or pathway. Cables containing Corning® bend-insensitive ClearCurve® fibre minimise the risk of network signal loss due to tight installation bends. Our LAN cables meet global RoHS standards, and our cables intended for
permanent indoor use also meet the requirements of the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR).
Because speed of installation is often important in LAN deployments, our core cable products are widely available in distributor inventory.

Cable
Corning Optical Communications Enterprise Networks EMEA Playbook | LAN-1765-BEN | Page 6
Customer BenefitsRisk Mitigation• Expansive cable product portfolio provides one manufacturer
for all network segments, regardless of environment or pathway.
• Corning® ClearCurve® fibre cables minimise risk of network signal loss due to tight installation bends.
• Meets global RoHS standards.• Meeting the EU CPR requirements by providing high-
performance cable products mitigates the risk of human safety as well as protects assets in the event of a fire.
Speed of Installation• Core cable products are widely available in distributor
inventory.• Gel-free cables offer installers quicker cable prep time for
splicing and rework.• Selected cable types are available as a FastShip option for
small moves, adds, and changes (MACs).
Anticipated ObjectionsI think I’ll just get the lowest price cable. What’s wrong with that?• Be aware of the fibre and cable specifications when deciding
on a supplier.• A single supplier in your network reduces interoperability
concerns.• While hardware components are easier to exchange or adapt
over time, cable is the one component in the LAN that needs to be ready to support today’s and tomorrow’s network requirements.
Lead-in QuestionsDetermine customer’s fibre type based on their application:• What is the timeline and budget for your project?• What is your longest run/drop?• What is the application? Do you need indoor, outdoor, or
indoor/outdoor cable? - IF INDOOR (250 μm): · Central tube or loose tube? · Which CPR class is required? - IF INDOOR (tight buffered, 900 μm): · How many fibres do you need? · Which CPR class is required? · Mini-breakout or breakout? - MIC® cable (2-24 fibres), J-V(ZN)HH, - Indoor breakout cable (2-24 fibres), T-VHH
- IF OUTDOOR (loose tube, 250 μm): · Central tube or loose tube? · Non-armoured or armoured? · Dielectric armour or steel armour? · Polyamide jacket for industrial or oil & gas?
- IF INDOOR/OUTDOOR: · 250 µm or 900 µm tight buffered? - If 250 μm, FREEDM™ central tube or loose tube?
> Non-armoured or armoured? - If armoured, dielectric armour or steel armour? - If 900 μm tight buffered, FREEDM tight buffer or breakout?
If a customer has preselected fibre requirements and only needs pricing and availability:• What is the timeline and budget for your project?• Single-mode or multimode?• Indoor, outdoor, or indoor/outdoor?• Number of fibres?• CPR rating

When designing a local area network, consider hardware products optimised for any style of installation, at any point in the network. With two different formats, LANscape® and CCH, rack-mountable as well as wall-mountable product solutions meet these requirements.
Rack-mountable hardware reaches from the entry level LANC (field-termination or splicing), to the more versatile LANS (field-termination, splicing, pre-terminated cabling) to the feature-rich and high-fibre-count CCH hardware solution (field-termination, splicing, pre-terminated cabling). LANscape format outlets offer regional variation as needed and SPH (field-termination), as well as WCH (field-termination, splicing) allow CCH termination on the wall.
Our hardware lines are also tailored for below-floor, ceiling mount, or environmentally sealed applications. CCH modules are available as either a customisable or pigtailed splice module or termination cassette, while LANC and LANS both are available as a preloaded version for easy and quick deployment.
To contain costs, all the key components needed for initial installation are included with each housing, including cable strain-relief brackets. When purchasing CCH modules, a single pigtailed module part number includes pigtails, adapter panel, cable ties, and heat-shrinks.

Hardware
Corning Optical Communications Enterprise Networks EMEA Playbook | LAN-1765-BEN | Page 9
Customer BenefitsFlexibility in hardware• Hardware product lines are optimised for any style of
installation, at any point in the network: - CCH – rack-mountable, field-terminated, spliced - WCH – wall-mountable, field-terminated, spliced - SPH – wall-mountable or hat-rail mountable, field-terminated - LANC – rack-mountable, field-terminated, spliced - LANS – rack-mountable, field-terminated, spliced,
pre-terminated• Hardware is also available tailored for below-floor, ceiling-
mount, environmentally sealed, and wall-outlet applications.• CCH cassettes are available as an empty or fully equipped
splice module and termination cassette.• LANC/LANS splice packs are suitable for both LANC and LANS
housings.
Cost containment• Key components for initial install are included with each
housing.• CCH modules: a single pigtailed cassette part number includes
pigtail, adapter panel, cable ties, and heat-shrinks.
Ease of use• Common adapter panel design allows the same panels to be
used in any housing with CCH footprint (CCH, WCH, SPH, EDC, or ICH housing).
• CCH modules and cassettes can be used in both CCH and WCH housings.
• LANC/LANS adapter modules can be used in any hardware with LANscape® footprint (panels, customer outlets, floor boxes, and consolidation points)
Anticipated ObjectionsWhy do housings not ship with adapter panels preloaded?• With the CCH housings, the sheer number of variables
involved means that loading set part numbers for all possible options does not make sense.
• On the LANC/LANS housings, however, we offer preloaded versions, which respond to individual customer requirements.
Is my preferred product in stock?• Corning works very closely with its distributors to ensure a
deep stock level for all core hardware products. Both CCH and LANC/LANS housings are part of the Corning core products portfolio.
I’m concerned about CCH module or cassette costs. • Cassette installation saves time and money, not only on
labor, but on managing and protecting fibre from damage. Time savings equals money savings.
Lead-in QuestionsIs the housing required to be rack- or wall-mountable?
How many fibres are you terminating?• Helps determine how many CCH panels/modules or
LANC/LANS adapters you need in order to choose the right housing size.
Is there need for a NEMA- or IP-rated housing?• If yes, will you use adapter panels or splice tray? • If no, continue with LANC/LANS, CCH, or WCH.• Will the housing be indoor or outdoor?
Are fibres to be field-terminated, spliced, or pre-terminated?
Are you going to use adapter panels or CCH modules or do you require a modular housing?

and-polish connector; lowest total installed cost.
Index-matching gel (IMG) reliability:• Life span of IMG is 203 years. Testing has shown the IMG did
not dry out after subjected to 80°C for 29 years.
Single-mode performance levels for UniCam connectors:• Typical insertion loss of 0.2 dB/maximum 0.5 dB;
return loss of -55 dB.
Vibration tested for harsher environments
Lead-in QuestionsThings to consider:
Is fibre termination a concern for you?
Is your staff trained on a particular termination method?• Skill level will determine what type of connectivity to use
(direct termination with UniCam or fusion splicing with the help of LANC/LANS splice packs or in CCH modules)
Would a decrease in the termination time of a connector afford you greater profits?
Is connector performance a critical factor for you or your customers?• CCH splice modules as well as LANC/LANS splice packs, and
UniCam connectors have a factory-polished fibre stub.
Is product availability a necessity for project completion?• All three items, UniCam connectors, LANC/LANS splice packs
and CCH modules are part of Corning’s core products, and they are stocked with our distributors.
How to choose your connectivity:
Are you going to splice or direct terminate?• You can splice using LANC/LANS splice packs in the LANscape®
footprint housings and the CCH pigtailed module or splice cassette in the new WCH or CCH housings. You can direct terminate using LANC/LANS modules, CCH adapter panels, or termination cassettes.

In simple terms, a data centre is a building or portion of a building whose primary function is to house a computer room and its support areas. The data centre is the heart of the network, and its functions regarding secure data storage are critical.
Corning has been on the forefront of data centre design and evolution since we introduced the industry’s first plug-and-play
data centre solution in 2007. Since that time, we have continued to enhance our data centre solutions to provide greater design flexibility, improved ease of installation, and a smaller cable footprint. Today’s solutions offer faster installation times for moves, adds, and changes, as well as 100 percent fibre utilisation.

Customer BenefitsPre-Terminated Solutions• Pre-terminated solutions allow for faster, simpler installations.
Flexibility in Migration Path• EDGE8™ solutions provide scalable options for migration from
1 to 400G.• EDGE™ and EDGE8 solutions offer modular tip-to-tip
connectivity, higher density, and superior cable management.
Fibre Utilisation• EDGE8 offers improved link performance and 100 percent fibre
utilisation.
Anticipated ObjectionsI only need 10G now. I’m not concerned about future bandwidth currently.• With the “Internet of Everything,” bandwidth demands are
growing. Density, network uptime, speed, simplicity, and a clear migration path to meet future requirements are critical considerations that will affect you in the near future.
I’m concerned about the cost of a pre-terminated solution.• Based on projected bandwidth growth for your data centre,
it’s wise to invest in a system that won’t have to be replaced in the near future. A solution designed to achieve a lower cost of ownership becomes more cost-effective over time.
Lead-in QuestionsThings to consider: • What are your current data requirements? 1G, 10G, 40G,
or beyond?
• Are you planning for future data rates? Do you have a clear migration path?
• Is 100 percent fibre utilisation an important factor?
• How often do you have moves, adds, or changes (MACs)?
• What is your longest run?
• Are you port tapping? Implementing Ethernet or Fibre Channel?
• What type of electronics are you using?

Working with Corning just got easier!Winning the business requires a prompt response and a faster turnaround time. Here are Corning’s best practice tips on theinformation to provide. Be sure to pull standard pricing from your current files.
Protecting your margin:1. When pricing pre-terminated cable assemblies, make sure you have included the base price plus the per meter adder.2. Check freight terms – consider combining purchase orders to avoid freight charges.3. Are there charges for cutting and respooling cable onto a separate reel?4. Be aware of cable tolerances. Too long? You will be charged for the cable overage. Make sure to specify zero tolerance on your purchase
order if you need exact length. Who to call?1. Contact Corning’s local sales manager to determine the best pricing strategy.2. Reach out to Corning’s Customer Care ([email protected]) to request day-to-day, meet comp or project pricing.
