ABOUT ORGANIZATION

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity transforms communities through neighborhood revitalization, education, innovative development and partnerships. As one of the largest affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International and the largest nonprofit homebuilder in Atlanta, Atlanta Habitat has built more than 1,600 houses—impacting the lives of more than 5,500 family members and 168 neighborhoods—since 1983. In addition to constructing affordable, green, high-quality homes, Atlanta Habitat also rehabs existing structures and performs critical repairs for qualifying homeowners. Houses are built with and sold to low-income, first-time homebuyers through zero-interest mortgages in Atlanta and South Fulton County.

WHY WE NEED A FELLOW

The AHFH Rose Fellow will be exposed to mentoring and training along the entire spectrum of Atlanta Habitat activities. They will comprehend how analytics guide planning neighborhood revitalization strategies under our housing policy team. They will understand municipal integration in site planning, permitting, and home design under our architectural team. The fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the home building process with our construction team. This multi-faceted approach to the fellow’s development is the ideal environment to develop a professional with a community mindset.

Part of the Fellow’s responsibilities will be to assist in the master planning of our newest and most innovative development to date, Brown’s Mill Village. Brown’s Mill Village will be a mixed income, mixed housing type development with a focus on sustainability and education. Additionally, AHFH has a new expanded

mission that focuses on neighborhood revitalization through new home builds, rehabilitation, neighborhood cleanups, as well as partnerships to improve safety, community assets, and education outcomes. These strategies align with AHFH’s primary goal of breaking the cycle of generational poverty through individual wealth building.

We are expanding our ability to serve seniors and families within Atlanta Habi-tat’s existing structure in order to maximize the efficiency and quality of the homes we build for them. This includes developing new and innovative home designs that tighten the building envelope and create healthy living spaces, designing and building for an aging population, and assisting AHFH in quantifying effective outcomes. We’ll know we’ve been successful when we are able to roll out new designs that better serve the needs of residents throughout the city of Atlanta. PROJECTS

Project Name: Data Strategy Design

The Challenge:

The Rose fellow will work in conjunction with a new Data Analyst to design long term metrics by which AHFH will measure its success. The Rose Fellow’s crea-tivity and community focused mentality will be instrumental in the development of key outcomes.

Questions Our Fellow Will Help Us Solve

How will AHfH measure success?

For so long, we have measured our outputs (homes built, repaired, painted, etc) but, in light of our expanded mission to revitalize neighborhoods and empower homeowners beyond the build, how will we now go about defining our outcomes?

How can we go about determining the effects of our families, homes and pro-grams on the neighborhoods where we build, renovate and repair?

Project Name: Sustainable Design Integration (Browns Mill Village)

The Challenge:

The Rose fellow will work with the VP of Housing and Neighborhood Engage-ment, the COO, and the entire design team to ensure that the development of Browns Mill Village includes a sustainable design model.

Questions Our Fellow Will Help Us Solve

How can AHfH and its development partners efficiently design and build a scala-ble, 31-acre residential, low-impact development that serves individuals at various income levels, with multiple housing types?

Project Name: Senior Living Models

The Challenge:

The Rose Fellow will lead the effort to host a design series that will focus on effi-cient living styles for seniors.

Questions Our Fellow Will Help Us Solve

How can AHFH modify its traditional building styles to focus on aging in place for seniors?

Is there a smaller, more efficient design that better suits the living needs and tastes of seniors that AHFH can adapt?

How can AHFH modify its existing builder/seller business model to ensure that seniors can be financially stable and reap the benefits of homeowner-ship?

PROCESS AND PROGRESS

Working beyond our proven model. Atlanta Habitat has been successful based on a model of philanthropic donors, volunteerism, and civic respon-sibility. With the ever-changing housing and real estate markets, what op-portunities exist that could allow us to do what we do, better? In that vein, we would like the Rose Fellow to establish an internal sustainability review process. This will help us to determine if, and how, we can plan and build for low-impact developments and energy efficient homes. We would like for sustainable building to be part of the building process and not an after-thought or addition.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN HERE

Fellows hosted by Atlanta Habitat for Humanity will be exposed to the full range of non-profit homebuilding in Atlanta. From engaging with neigh-bors and meeting with Atlanta Habitat families, to directing neighborhood strategy and evaluating and reflecting on housing policy. They will be in-volved in the entire build process including donor engagement, volunteer coordination, lot selection, permitting, design, scheduling, and construction.

The exposure the Fellow will get will allow them to grasp the full picture of what it takes to put families in homes and on the road to a successful future. In the process, they will also have the opportunity to hear the stories and anecdotal tales of individual families. This can help build understanding and empathy about the life circumstances that brought them to our doors and why Atlanta Habitat was their best option. They’ll see the analytical side as well as they dig into housing and other relevant data to paint a picture of the population we serve and the effects of Habitat on individuals and com-munities over time.
