●   Jazz originatad in New Orleans played by black musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton.   After 1917, racism forced many of them to move to other towns in the north to play in night clubs of Chicago and New York.

●   People at home started to listen to jazz thanks to the invention of the radio and the phonograph (record player). The first ones to record jazz were the Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917.   They were called 'race records', because they were recorded by black musicians.

●   Because it was often played in speakeasies, by black musicians, it was seen as wild and exciting - which soon made it very popular.

●   Jazz music contributed to many of the social developments of the age - baggy trousers and short skirts.
