by Jeni CottrellOnce a year, the Whatcom Artist

Studio Tour (WAST) invites the public into private workspaces throughout the county during the first two weekends of October.

Sculptor Chris Moench started the free self-guided studio tour in 1994 as an opportunity to network with other artists. Moench had been holding an annual open house at his studio, but felt isolated from other artists and creative processes. The first tour had eight artists, mostly friends and vendors from the Bellingham Farmers Market.

Fast forward twenty years to 2014: there are now over fifty artists representing nine juried categories including painting, sculpture, photography, woodworking, book making, jewelry, glass, clay, and mixed media. WAST is a great opportunity to tour studios, view and purchase a variety of quality artwork, see demonstrations, talk with artists and explore beautiful Whatcom County.

There are several opportunities to help decide how to customize your tour. Jansen Art Center in Lynden is hosting a group show with an artist reception on Thursday, October 2 from 6-8pm. For tour maps and details, check www.studiotour.net or pick up the full color brochure guide at Village Books, Fourth Corner Frames, Roger Jobs, Dakota Arts, FrameWorks and other shops and restaurants around the county.

In addition to traditional artists studios, the public is welcomed into homes, shops, garages, and even photographer Tommy Gibson’s yurt. Some studios are almost as interesting as the art: Clarissa Callesen has a fascinating studio full of well-organized found objects she uses to create her unique sculptures. Yvette Neumann has transformed a horse barn on Kelly Road into a workshop and contemporary gallery to display her vibrant abstract paintings. A light-filled corner studio in the Morgan Block in Fairhaven is where Nancy Canyon paints images inspired by nature and writes poetry.

About half the artists on tour are offering demonstrations. Vernon Leibrant’s skills on the lathe always attract an audience in Everson, where he makes gorgeous wooden bowls with his wife Karen. Near Fairhaven, Irene Lawson shows her steady hands at creating intricate patterns of glaze on clay platters. Several jewelers will be offering demos all

day. Frank Goss will be focused on engraving in his downtown Bellingham studio, and Liane Redpath-Worlund is making pieces from start to finish at her home in the county.

If you want to explore your own creativity, ask the artist if they teach classes. Ed Schmid not only teaches glass blowing and bead making, but has also written several books on the subject. For color theory and portrait

workshops, talk with painter Joy Olney. You can sample a “taste” of the cake decorating classes offered by Andra Millage while viewing her three-dimensional cake sculptures.

A great thing about creating your own personal tour is combining a studio visit with exploring the

county. Assemblage artist Mary Ennes Davis and sculptor Gary Armstrong both have interesting studios located at opposite ends of Lake Whatcom with trails nearby.

There are always new artists, and returning artists whose work has changed. Painter Lois Dahl has been on the Bellingham art scene for fourteen years, but this will be the first time she has opened her studio to the public. And as for WAST founder Chris Moench? His studio

will be open, as it has been for twenty years, although his work has matured over time to focus on inspiring imagery carved onto porcelain and stoneware prayer wheels. Drop by and say “thanks” for giving us hundreds of studios to explore over the past two decades.

Look for the yellow and black WAST signs on the weekends of October 4 & 5 and 11 & 12, 10am-5pm, enjoy the art, and drive safely!

by Joanna Nesbit Those of us of a certain age will

remember the atrocities committed under Idi Amin’s regime during Uganda’s bloody civil war of the 1970’s. It was out of that war-torn country that the African Children’s Choir was born in 1984, created to help orphaned and abandoned Ugandan children.

Founder Ray Barnett, White Rock resident and human rights activist, formed the choir to rally support from the West. He brought 31 children ages 7-11 to the Pacific Northwest for their first performance. As young ambassadors, the 1984 choir performed its debut concert in

a small church just over the border and then toured down the West Coast, performing primarily in churches and becoming a mouthpiece for Uganda’s vulnerable children. The donations the choir received provided support and education for the children that would become a self-sustaining cycle.

This year, 30 years later, the organization is bringing its 41st troupe to Whatcom County, where you can catch several performances of these upbeat, talented youngsters who sing traditional African, gospel, and pop songs.

• October 29, 7pm: Faith Community Church, 586 Birch Bay-Lynden Rd., Lynden

organization, Music for Life, branch out to six countries beyond Uganda—Kenya, Rawanda, Nigeria, Ghana, South Sudan, and South Africa—to provide education and support. The two organizations have educated more than 50,000 children (some all the way through college), and have helped a further 100,000 children through their relief and education projects. One thousand children have toured with the African Children’s Choir, performing everywhere from small, local churches to Britain’s House of Commons, the Pentagon, and a Live 8 concert in London with Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney.

African Children’s Choir Celebrates 30th Anniversary

• November 16, 9:30am: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 858 W. Smith Rd., Bellingham

• November 16, 6:30pm: The Firs, 4605 Cable St., Bellingham

Early in October, the choir will also make stops in nearby Delta, Surrey, and Maple Ridge, so you might consider a quick jaunt over the border if the Whatcom County stops don’t work. Visit the choir’s website (below) for a complete schedule.

International Director and Bellingham resident Suzanne Nelson has been involved from the beginning, and can hardly believe the choir is celebrating its 30th anniversary. “When we first started the choir, nobody had ever heard of such a thing. It was civil war in Uganda, and people sort of laughed about Idi Amin as if he was a big joke, but of course, he was anything but a joke,” says Nelson.

Over a 30-year period, the support of the choir has helped its parent

Through the years, Nelson has seen the positive impact of the African Children’s Choir. Many children from earlier choirs, now young adults, have professional educations and work as teachers, lawyers, social workers, doctors, and pastors, some heading up Music for Life’s programs. They bring with them special insight into the struggles of current young choir members.

Nelson says it all got its start here in Washington (the original office floated around a bit before settling in Bellingham) and says the organization appreciates the support from the community. “They’ve sung for the Queen of England, for Nelson Mandela, and in other places around the world, but this is where they began and that feels significant,” she says.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. To learn more about the program and ways to help, visit www.africanchildrenschoir.com.

by Osa HaleOne of the wonderful things about a

liberal arts university is the dazzling assortment of events that take learning outside of the classroom, by allowing students and the community to experience something outside of their awareness.

This October, Western Washington University will be continuing a grand tradition with the first concert in its annual Sanford-Hill Piano Series. The series began in 2002 when members of the College of Fine and Performing Arts teamed up with private donor Sibyl Sanford to create a program that would both give the students access to world-class artists and fund scholarships for Western piano students.

For the 2014-2015 series, the Performing Arts Center on campus will host pianists Vadym Kholodenko, Beatrice Rana, and Gilles Vonsattel. It all begins on October 21, with Kholodenko. Jeffrey Gilliam, the artistic director of the series, has seen Kholodenko perform and was completely impressed.

“He plays with big power,” Gilliam said of Kholodenko. He also described the pianist as commanding, with tremendous sweep.

Beatrice Rana, who will perform on February 6, also had a strong effect on Gilliam when he saw her perform.

“She radiates something great from the inside... she touches the natural calm of the music,” he explained. “I was moved to tears.”

The series will wrap up on April 11 with Gilles Vonsattel, an internationally lauded recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. Vonsattel, who plays both traditionally classical music and modern, cutting-edge pieces, will bring an artistically playful twist to the conclusion of the 2014-2015 series.

Although the proceeds benefit students, the event is open to anyone interested in hearing a world-class pianist perform. Tickets are available at the Western Washington

University Performing Arts Center box office, and can be bought in person, over the phone (360-650-6146), or online at www.wwu.edu/sanfordhill/tickets.shtml. Tickets range from $16 to $40, based on seating.

For those interested in attending all three performances in the series, there is a promotional offer that includes free parking and a reception with Vadym Kholodenko. Call or visit the box office for more details.

Blues-Rock Veteran, Popa Chubby at the Lincoln Theatreby Osa Hale

The Lincoln Theatre, which is known for bringing films and theatrical productions to the Skagit Valley, will continue to delight and surprise this fall. On October 10, electric blues singer and guitarist Popa Chubby will take the stage.

Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, has built a name for himself with a sound that is as electric as his guitar, one that continues to evolve as he creates album after album. Coming up in New York and the intensely diverse punk-rock music scene there, a young Horowitz began cultivating a love and a talent for the blues. By the mid-90’s, he had established himself as Popa Chubby, and after releasing several albums on his own label, he signed on with Sony Music/Okeh Records. From there, his fame and his range grew, as the prolific performer released album after album. Now, he describes his own performance as a mash-up of the Stooges, Buddy Guy, Motörhead, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix and Robert Johnson.

The concert will definitely have the wild tone that befits true blues music. Popa Chubby walks the line between volatile and endearing; his music has a definite edge, as he intentionally brings in an element of danger. This makes the tunes all the more exciting, and brings energy to his live performances that is infectious.

Audiences can thank Free Spirit Productions and True Tone Audio for this lively show, says Roger Gietzen, director of the Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation. As the producers of the Mount Baker Blues Festival, the local businesses have a finger on the pulse of quality rhythm & blues, and were instrumental in bringing the legendary musician to the Lincoln Theatre.

“Popa Chubby is one of their personal favorites,” Gietzen explained. “He is a soulful guitar blues-rock guitar player and a theatrical showman.”

The Lincoln Theatre will be presenting this concert with festival seating on October 10 at 7:30pm. The venue is wheelchair-accessible. Tickets are $30 each, and can be purchased by calling the ticket office at 360-336-8955 or visiting the theatre’s website at https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?show=48413.

by Marla BronsteinIn October, 2007, partnering the love

of film together with the support of the community, Pickford Film Center first produced Doctober, screening 25 of the best domestic and international documentary films. Doctober continues to bring audiences together every October to enjoy great documentaries, community based partnerships, and occasionally a Q&A with the director, writer, or an actor associated with the film.

This year, Doctober will showcase approximately 50 documentary films in 30 days.

What does it take to produce the 2014 Doctober film series at PFC?

It takes experience and finesse at screening, scheduling and schmoozing distributors. Network connections with industry people are needed to obtain smaller and worthwhile films that haven’t made it to the bigger festivals. It takes hours upon hours, watching DVDs sent from filmmakers around the world, and checking out recommendations received from community members and local organizations, and attending film festivals at Telluride, Toronto, Vancouver, and Sundance looking for strong films and documentaries that work for the appreciative Bellingham audiences.

Michael Falter, program director for PFC since 2002, is all that and a tub of popcorn.

Think about how many movies you

personally have watched since 2002. Chances are that Falter has watched more than that in the past twelve months to choose films for this festival. Add to that the regular movie watching for year-round programming of PFC’s independent and art-house movies.

By the end of every summer, he has already made his Doctober choices (with some last minute juggling expected). Falter explained that some films become unavailable at the last minute, even if the film’s production team has solicited a screening. For example, How to Die in Oregon, produced in the Pacific Northwest, was in the 2012 lineup of Doctober. HBO picked it up out of Sundance, and it became unavailable – until now, finally getting its Doctober close-up in 2014.

Included in the 2014 schedule is a mix of new films, returning favorites and older films that have never been released

also be found on the PFC website, www.pickfordfilmcenter.org/event/doctober/. Many of the films only play one time, so keep your schedule close! Attendees to

Doctober can expect to find at least one new film every day, and if planned right, can attend 3 or 4 different films each day of the weekend. Patrons who are up to it can participate in the Doctober challenge, which involves seeing a minimum of 8 documentaries during the month. Falter promises new, different and exciting prizes to be awarded.

As if this craziness of scheduling 50+ films is not enough, in the middle of Doctober madness, the feature film Skeleton Twins will open at PFC on October 10 with writer/director Craig Johnson in attendance.

Falter recently returned from the Telluride Film Festival, and has already found a gem he plans to include in next year’s Doctober. Just wait and see what surprises he has in store.

theatrically. Doctober is not, and historically has never been, a premier festival. That being said, Falter is excited to announce that on October 3, PFC will

host the World Premier showing of Pelican Dreams. In attendance that night will be the filmmaker, Judy Irving, director of PFC favorite The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

During the festival, PFC proudly partners with many non-profits in the community who sponsor films by helping to promote attendance. Past sponsors have included Whatcom Humane Society, the Community Food Co-op, and Sustainable Connections.

In 2013, Lindsey Gerhard, Marketing Manager, created “cheat sheet schedule cards” of documentary listings, allowing

movie goers to easily find “all” of the show times for documentaries that reference topics such as music, environmental, historical and humanity-based issues. These cards will be available again this year at the box office, and will

by Christopher KeyBellingham Theatre Guild Vice-

President Kathy Murray is excited. “We will produce three engaging

musicals for our 86th season, along with two uproarious comedies,” Murray said. “From the opening show, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown to the last show,

Tony Award-winning The Drowsy Chaperone, we guarantee you’ll be entertained!”

The BTG has always known how to make an entrance. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is based on some of the most beloved comic strip characters of all time. Their creator, Charles Schultz, may no longer be with us, but Clark Gesner wrote the music and lyrics to this show that keeps Schultz’s creation alive. Mish Kriz directs and gets the award for genius casting by having T.J. Anderson play

Schroeder. Charlie Brown opened Sept. 26.

Directors Ed and Julie Marantette take on cynicism in all forms with their production of A Miracle on 34th Street. The show started life as a 1947 movie that brought Natalie Wood

to the attention of the public and won three Oscars. Meredith Willson, of Music Man fame, adapted the story for the stage, writing both music and lyrics. The holiday show opens November 28.

One thing that is guaranteed to keep you warm during the long grey season is hysterical laughter. That’s pretty much a lock with a Ken Ludwig script. The author of Lend Me a

Tenor and Moon over Buffalo brings more hilarity to the BTG stage with Leading Ladies. Judith Owens-Lancaster directs this knee-slapper about a couple of down-and-out Shakespearean actors who try to pass themselves off as heirs to a fortune. Leading Ladies debuts on February 13, 2015.

Larry Shue is another playwright whose anatomical studies have led him to the precise location of the funny bone. His classic The Foreigner comes to the BTG stage under the direction of Heidi Sackerson. British demolitions expert Froggy LeSueur brings his pathologically shy friend to a remote fishing lodge and tells the other inhabitants that Charlie is a foreigner who speaks no English. The show springs ahead on April 17, 2015.

Legendary drama teacher Teri Grimes may have retired from Bellingham High School, but not from the BTG. She’ll direct Tony Award-winning The Drowsy Chaperone, which will put an exclamation point at the end of the BTG season. The book is by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. This sendup of 1920s musical comedies features mistaken identities, spit takes, comic gangsters, a ditzy chorus girl and much more merry musical mayhem. It opens June 12, 2015.

Bellingham Theatre Guild shows run for three weeks and you can pin down the exact dates by accessing the site: www.bellinghamtheatreguild.com/playbill/. Guild shows often sell out, and if you don’t want to get stuck on a waiting list, get your tickets early. The BTG box office opens 10 days before each show, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1-6pm. Call 360-733-1811 to make your reservations. At just $8-$14, these tickets are the biggest theatrical bargain in Bellingham.

Pretty spry for an 86-year-old!

You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown cast members include Les Campbell as Linus, Jeremy Loween as Charlie Brown, and Zoe Bronstein as Lucy. In the

center is Cary Thomas who plays Sally. T.J. Anderson and Thomas Beirne are in front. They portray Schroeder and Snoopy, respectively.

by Christopher KeyFor reasons that are endlessly debated,

some novels work their way into the racial consciousness and become part of our mythology. Such a work is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It has spawned a field of literature that grows like poison ivy, dozens of theatrical and film interpretations, and even a ballet.

Northwest Ballet Theater Artistic Director John Bishop created original choreography

for his take on the classic tale last year. I know he did his homework because he borrowed some of my vampire books. The result was a stunning production filled with high drama and dazzling dance. It was, hands-down, the most popular original production that NBT has created.

Bishop and NBT understand that you don’t mess with success. Much. There’ll be new backdrops and some tweaked

choreography, but the story remains the same. So do some of the dancers.

Josh Deininger is tall, dark and gruesome as the creepy Count. His leaping ability will astound you, and he tosses the ballerinas around as though they were made of styrofoam. The character of Lady Bathory, mother of all vampires, entered the legend some time after Stoker, but has remained a vital part of the mythology. Natasha Keeley plays her with a bloodthirsty gusto that will play hob with your vital signs.

Alona Christman, doyenne of The Firehouse Performing Arts Center, plays the lunatic Renfield with an athleticism that is, by itself, worth the price of admission.

The Vampire Strikes Back — Ballet Returns for Second Season

Dracula opens at Mount Vernon’s McIntyre Hall on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available by calling 360-416-7727 or online at www.mcintyrehall.org. Saturday and

Sunday, October 25 and 26, the production moves to the Mount Baker Theatre. Tickets may be purchased at 360-734-6080 or at www.mountbakertheatre.com.
