1. Mightier than the Sword

On January 20, President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the new integrated

terminal at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport .

The Airports Authority of India had hired a Thai-Indian consortium, Italian-

Thai Development Public Co. Ltd-ITD Cementation, to build the new terminal

which was to feature segments from classic Bengali culture , folklore and

literature and serve as a tribute to the Bengali heritage.

Following is a snapshot of the roof of the newly constructed terminal .

Identify the design and what exactly it is supposed to be .

magic , you SEE ?”

The Gustav Gun was a German railway gun. It was developed in the late 1930s by Krupp as

siege artillery for the explicit purpose of destroying the main forts of the French Maginot

Line, the strongest fortifications then in existence. The fully assembled gun weighed nearly

1,350 tonnes, and could fire shells weighing seven tonnes to a range of 47 kilometres .

It was the largest-calibre rifled weapon ever used in combat, the heaviest mobile artillery

piece ever built in terms of overall weight, and fired the heaviest shells of any artillery piece.

Said to be almost immune to aircraft fire and artillery bombardment , the Gustav had one

fatal flaw which could allow it to be destroyed by just a simple chemical reaction that could

be initiated in seconds by a single enemy soldier.

Which reaction / combination of chemicals could achieve this ?

3. Where it all began

The following slide shows one of scientific history’s most famous pictures ,

almost self-deprecatingly named simply as Photograph 51 .

It was to become the keystone evidence for one of the 21st century’s stellar

achievements and equally generate great controversy .

What was the discovery and why was it controversial , especially with

respect to Photo 51 ?

DNA structure by James Watson and Francis Crick

The controversy was over the fact that almost all the primary evidence ,

including photo 51 was collected by Rosalind Franklin , who was never

felicitated for her contributions , whereas Watson , Wilkins and Crick went on

to win the Nobel.

4. Evil in shining armour

According to various character histories , he obtained an item from

his abusive father that would employ it in a perverse nightly

“game” that always ended with a beating. This would instill in him ,

his lifelong struggle with freewill and his eventual inability to make

choices on his own . This reflected in other facets of his life as he

staged events to happen at 10.22 pm.

Contrary to his popular depiction in the film , this character was

“created” due to acid and not oil.

Who am I alluding to ?

The Stockholm district court ordered the two main domains used by

Pirate Bay , namely , .thepiratebayse and .piratebayse to be seized

for copyright violation.

Taking a cue from the myth of the Lernaean Hydra , which could

grow two more heads each time one was cut off , Pirate Bay

instituted redirects from these two domain names to 6 other domain

names across the world , thereby avoiding prosecution .

The Yasukuni shrine in Japan has been the epicenter of a fair amount of

controversies primarily due to the fact that several of the Japanese

“martyrs” buried therein are accused of heinous war crimes during WW II

against the Chinese.

Recently , Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s visit to this place , attracted an op-ed

from the Chinese ambassador to the UK which ran as “If militarism is like

the haunting X of Japan , the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo is a kind of Y ,

representing the darkest parts of the nation’s soul” . The Japanese

Ambassador to the UK countered by writing “China risks becoming Asia’s

Y”

1. The enduring legacy

One of modern day research’s most indispensable tools , X was originally

brought into lab research without the source / origin’s knowledge or

consent. Since then , X has gone on to become one of the most enduring

and symbolic research tools as well as has inspired a film and a best selling

book (shown on the next slide)

The immense utility of X has found application in research into cancer,

AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and

countless other scientific pursuits. X has been used to test human

sensitivity to tape, glue, cosmetics, and many other products. Scientists

have grown some 20 tons of X and there are almost 11,000 patents involving

X.

2. Narcos

At the height of its power, Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel supplied 80% of

the world's cocaine and smuggled 15 tons of cocaine into the US per day.

They would often write off 10% of their annual revenue , or $ 2.1 BILLION as

damages due to rodents and water spoilage.

However , they also faced a rather elementary problem with the excess of

money , which required them to spend $ 2500 a year on something vitally

important , but easily overlooked due to its commonality and everyday

usage.

In late December 2013 , there began a search trend , documented by

Google , which continued to show a spike for around 2 months .

The trend saw people increasingly search for winter sports , in

particular skiing .

What particular event , that overnight became a global news, caused

this trend to arise ?

4. A small mistake

On the night of June 17 1972 , Frank Wills , a security guard on night shift ,

stumbled on a small piece of tape stuck to the latchet of a door to keep it

unlocked.

What followed was the probably the biggest political scandal in history , which

was devastating in its impact. The aftermath saw the indictment of 69 people,

with trials or pleas resulting in 48 being found guilty, many of whom were X’s

top administration officials. X himself resigned shortly afterwards in order to

avoid impeachment proceedings. The scandal inspired the classic film, All the

President’s Men , starring Dustin Hoffman and was billed as “The most

devastating detective story of this century”

radiography , a work that later helped a research team win the Nobel

Prize in Chemistry. He also founded a company called Gray Matter

with his close friend and dated his secretary briefly. He later abruptly

left the venture , after which his friend and the secretary married and

made a fortune worth $ 2.6 billion from X’s research work , which X

"The X" were a group of prominent Jewish-Hungarian scientists (mostly, but not

exclusively, physicists and mathematicians) who immigrated to the United States

in the early half of the 20th century. They included, among others, Theodore von

Kármán, John von Neumann, Paul Halmos, Eugene Wigner, Edward Teller,

George Pólya, and Paul Erdős.

Since they all spoke English with a strong accent they were considered outsiders

in American society. The Hungarian scientists were seemingly superhuman in

intellect, spoke an incomprehensible native language, and came from a small

obscure country. This led to them being christened X, a name which they adopted

after finding it humorous.

Paul Erdős was a Hungarian mathematician. He was one of the most prolific

mathematicians of the 20th century. He was known both for his social practice of

mathematics (he engaged more than 500 collaborators) and for his eccentric

lifestyle. He devoted his waking hours to mathematics, even into his later years—

indeed, his death came only hours after solving a geometry problem in a

conference in Warsaw.

Erdős published around 1,500 mathematical papers during his lifetime, a figure

that remains unsurpassed. He firmly believed mathematics to be a social activity,

living an itinerant lifestyle with the sole purpose of writing mathematical papers

with other mathematicians.

He coined the term Erdos Number . What is it a measure of ?

X is a British sit-com which has attained almost cult status over the years.

An integral part of the 1990s British pop culture , X’s actual run was just 15

episodes , all of which were written by the actor Y who portrayed him.

Y conceived the idea of X while still studying at Oxford University. The

series draws inspiration from real life performers like Jacques Tati as well

as comic actors in silent films.

X has inspired a popular animated spin-off , two feature films s well as an

appearance at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.

screenplay for Y , the film adaptation of X , for which Z won the Academy

award for Best Original Screenplay , thereby making Z one of the only two

people to have won both an Oscar and a Nobel Prize (1925) , the other being

scientists , namely , Dr. Raja Ramana , Dr. P.K. Iyengar , and Dr. Homi

The term X effect stems from an anecdote set at the time of British rule of

colonial India. The British government was concerned about the number of

X in Delhi. The government therefore offered a bounty for every dead X.

Initially this was a successful strategy as large numbers were killed for the

reward. Eventually, however, enterprising people began to breed X for the

income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program

was scrapped, causing the X breeders to set the now-worthless Xs free. As a

result, the wild X population further increased. The apparent solution for the

problem made the situation even worse. The X effect occurs when an

attempted solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse. This is

an instance of unintended consequences. The term is used to illustrate the

causes of incorrect stimulation in economy and politics.

Designed to orbit Mars as the first interplanetary weather satellite,

the Mars Orbiter was lost in 1999 because the Nasa team used X

while a contractor used Y. The $125m probe came too close to Mars

as it tried to manoeuvre into orbit, and is thought to have been

destroyed by the planet's atmosphere. An investigation said the

"root cause" of the loss was the "failed translation of Y into X" in a

X is a monument of immense historical importance. In the 7th Century, a group of

Arabs led by Malik Bin Deenar and Malik bin Habib arrived in Thrissur District of

Kerala and constructed X at Kodungalloor, naming it after their contemporary

Cheraman Perumal.

X has an ancient oil lamp which always burns and which is believed to be more

X is one of those rare filmmakers who is unabashedly vocal about his

inspirations and once famously remarked “I steal from every movie ever

made” .

A few years ago , an animated flashback in one of his most iconic films was

actually inspired by an Indian film. He admitted this to Anurag Kasyap at

Venice that the idea of violence being animated was derived from an Indian

serial killer movie.

X was a critically acclaimed 1988 film that went on to win all the four major Oscars ,

except Lead Actress , and featured Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in their seminal

film roles.

It went on to stamp its place as one of the most iconic movies of all time and one

which left a lasting impression on pop culture and public imaginations , so much so

that its title itself has today come to signify a commonly used word X , whose

definition is given below :

“Noun. (pejorative) An autistic, or mentally and/or socially impaired person.

(pejorative) A non-autistic or impaired person whose mannerisms are similar to such

people. “
