Playoffs. Even after losing starter Junior Sariah Short to a pulled tendon in her bowling hand, the Wildcats didn’t seem to skip a beat. The ladies came out strong winning Game 1 5-3 (987-907) and Game 2 6-2 (1004-866). With only needing 3 more points to clinch the match and up 218 pins, the Wildcats held off a late Patriots' rally with Ellender winning Game 3 6-2 (1071-1023), but the Wildcats maintaining the total pin lead for the overall victory, 16-11 and 3014-2844! Junior Brianna McCurley led the Wildcats with a 571 (187, 214) and Senior/Captain Sarah LeDuff followed with a 539 (216, 188). Freshman Jessie Smith rolled a 528 (180, 196), Junior Brittnee Robinson had a 521 (212) and Freshman Alanna Coward bowled a 484 (194).

GSBC CrawfiSh feStival & Car Show Saturday Greenwell Springs Baptist Church will hold their Crawfish Festival this Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The festival will feature a crawfish boiling competition, all-you-can-eat crawfish, inflatables, a silent baked goods auction, and a car show. Car show check in is from 10 to 11 a.m., and the show starts at 11 with judging at 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Greenwell Springs Baptist Church Student Ministry. All-you-can-eat crawfish tickets are $20 per adult and $10 per child ages 12 and under, with a family maximum cost of $50. If you read last week’s column you know I am concerned that the Central School Board has no current long-term facilities plan. The city, however, does have a long-term plan for how and where the city should grow. It is called the Master Land Use Plan, or “Master Plan.” Years of effort and planning went into Central’s Master Plan, including numerous public meetings where the input of Central’s citizens helped to formulate the plan. Property was zoned as Rural and Low-Density Residential in order to preserve Central’s rural character and to guard against growth that will burden our schools and cause additional traffic problems. Other areas were specifically zoned for business development and higher density neighborhoods. Now it seems that just about every developer comes to Central

and asks that their project be made an exception to the Master Plan. The Settlement on Shoe Creek was granted their exception and that City Council decision is being challenged in court. Consider these four very recent examples. Last month a large development at Hooper and Lovett was presented to the Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z) for preliminary consideration. The plan includes rezoning Rural/Agricultural property to Residential. On this month’s P&Z agenda a proposed 175 home subdivision on Wax Road across from the High School will be considered. The developer is asking for the property to be rezoned from Rural/Agricultural and Low Density Residential to High Density Residential. The expansion of the Shoe Creek development is also on the P&Z agenda. The developer is asking for Low Density Residential property to be rezoned as Medium Density. Arden Oaks, a 79-home subdivision, is also on the agenda. The development adjoins Hampton Village and Comite Hills West. The applicant is requesting rezoning of Low Density Residential to Medium Density for this development.

I am NOT anti-growth or anti-development in Central. But I AM committed to limiting that growth to what we all planned for and agreed on in the Master Plan process. If property was zoned Low Density Residential, then that is what it should be used for. I am hopeful that the P&Z Commission and City Council will stick to the Master Plan. I understand that developers want to build subdivisions, because that is how they make money, and the more homes they can put on an acre, the more money they can make. For them, this is smart business. However, Central is in the business of sustaining a desirable lifestyle for its citizens. When those two agendas collide, Central needs to first protect the Master Plan. If there is solid reasoning behind rezoning an area of the city, the P&Z and City Council have a process to make that happen. Instead, what I am seeing is the city reacting to developers who don’t want to abide by the long-term goals of the Master Plan. The two hottest topics in Central are traffic and overcrowded schools. The best way to keep these problems in check is to stick to the Master Land Use Plan we all agreed on. That would be Good News for a Great City.

From Central Fire Department Last Thursday at approximately 9:45 p.m., CFD Engines 333, 313, 343, Tanker 356 and Rescue 338 were dispatched to the 17000 block of Wax Road for an apartment fire. On arrival firefighters found neighbors extinguishing a fire that had burned up the outside wall of an apartment. Firefighters completed extinguishment on the exterior fire then forced entry to the locked apartment. There was no active fire in the apartment; but the apartment was full of smoke. Since the apartment was vacant, firefighters completed a primary search to be sure no occupants were in the smoke filled apartment. The exterior wall suffered fire damage and a kitchen cabinet was also damaged. The fire was started by a plumber that had sweated a copper pipe earlier in the day and heated something in the wall that smoldered for some time before it ignited. There were no injuries. East Side Engine 913 served as the Rapid Intervention Crew and District Six Engine 523 covered an empty Central station.

CFD Responds to Wax Road Apartment Fire

From Central Fire Department Central Fire Department was dispatched to Central Walmart on Sullivan Road on April 11 at around 9 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found a big box store with a moderate amount of smoke and the store still occupied. A fire had been extinguished with fire extinguishers by store employees and a customer on the yarn aisle. All occupants and store employees were evacuated from the building. Central Fire set up fans to remove the smoke from the building. Two juveniles from nearby Central Woods neighborhood were later arrested by Baton Rouge Fire Investigators in connection with the Wal Mart fire. The names of the juveniles are being withheld due to their age. The two were booked with aggravated arson. The store reopened Tuesday, April 12, at 7 a.m.

Press Release Local high school students Jessica Litloff of Holden High School, Sawyer Welborn of Central High School, John Wiese of Runnels High School and Kennedy Wilcher of Zachary High School each won an all-expense paid trip, this coming June, to Washington, D.C. They were the four winners in the 2016 DEMCO Rural Electric Youth Tour Essay Contest. The essay contest is an annual event that includes essay entries from students throughout DEMCO’s seven-parish service area. Each student who participated wrote an original essay as a letter to an elected official of their choosing. The four winners were selected March 1, 2016 during a banquet honoring the 12 finalists, their families, teachers, and school principals. The banquet was held at John Folse’s White Oak Plantation in Baton Rouge. The other eight finalists included the following area students: Grace Bordelon and Sarah Johnson of St. Joseph’s Academy; Hannah Cowart, Ashley Gouedy and Abigail Wootan of Central High School; William Hartmann of St. Michael High School; Adam Howe of Runnels High School; and Jamie Martin of West Feliciana High School. Featured speaker and local

meteorologist Jeff Morrow was able to give a firsthand opinion of his experience as a finalist and winner of DEMCO’s program as a participant in 2002. “Stay close to those who are close to you,” Morrow urged the students, “and never lose faith along your path of life.” Each finalist was judged on the oral presentation of his or her essay. The finalists also completed a short test on their knowledge of DEMCO and rural electrification. DEMCO’s four Youth Tour winners will join 25 other Louisiana students and leave for a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C in mid-June. While in Washington, D.C., the Louisiana Youth Tour participants will visit the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Supreme Court, National Archives, Arlington Cemetery, and many other historic buildings and landmarks. They will also join about 1,300 other Youth Tour participants from around the nation to learn more about electric cooperatives. 2016 marks the 39th year DEMCO has sponsored students in the Youth Tour program. The purpose of the Youth Tour program is to provide outstanding youth with an insight into how their national government operates.

Also in semis, Central Boys’ Senior/Captain Johnathan Ryder’s four year high school bowling career came to an end. Ryder was the only Wildcat from the boys team to advance in the LHSAA Boys Individual State Championship semifinal round. Ryder capped one of the biggest improvements an individual from Central bowling has ever had. Averaging only 128 his freshman year, Ryder improved his average by over 50 pins, won 81% of his matches (92-21) and finished as a state semi finalist. LHSAA State Championship: Central’s domination of high school girls bowling was on full display in the Championship Round of the state playoffs. The three games in the final round were as good as any girls team

(from anywhere) has ever bowled, period! Morgan City (15-2) ran into a buzz saw as the Wildcats (16-0) came out on fire and never looked back. The Tigers came about with a strong 998 in Game 1, but the Wildcats responded with one of their highest games ever with an 1138 and took first game 6-2. Coward led the way with a LHSAA personal high 243 game, Smith rolled a 224 and Robinson had a 199. Up 140 pins, the Wildcats weren't close to being done. The large Central fan base saw the Wildcats full potential come together and any hope Morgan City had to get back in the match was quickly squashed. In Game 2 the Wildcats strung strike after strike after strike to

an eventual school record 1185 (to the Tigers' 949) en route to a 7-1 victory. The record setting performance included McCurley’s 233, Robinson’s 223, Coward’s 213, LeDuff’s 206, Smith’s 190 and Junior Dante Garcia’s 120. With The Wildcats up 376 pins and 13-3, the State Championship was essentially Central’s. The Wildcats cruised in Game 3 winning 5-3 (1049-924). After all the pins settled, the Wildcats had won their first team LHSAA Bowling State Championship in school history by a final score 21-6 and 3372-2821. Not surprisingly, the ladies set another school record with the 3372 series (231 pins over the previous record)! In comparison to this season’s dominance by the Wildcats, only one team (Ellender) in the entire state had cracked 3000 for a series. Central accomplished that feat a staggering 8 times! Literally and figuratively, the Wildcats saved their best for last! Smith led the Wildcats with a great 620 (224, 190, 206), followed by Robinson's also stellar 615 (199, 223, 193), Coward's 595 (243, 213, 139), McCurley's 595 (167, 233, 195) and LeDuff's 590 (187, 206, 197)!!! Robinson, Coward and McCurley’s series were all LHSAA personal highs. And if all that wasn't enough, Smith took home the LHSAA Girls Individual State Championship with a 206 average and Robinson won Girls Individual State Runner-Up with a 205 average! Six months after their first practice in October, the Wildcats proudly held up the state title as the UNDEFEATED STATE CHAMPIONS!

The ladies have accomplished so many feats this year including a State Championship, their first undefeated season, new school records for a game (1185) and series (3372), 2016 Louisiana High School Invitational Champions (2nd year in a row), District Champions (3rd year in a row), seven Wildcats making All District 1st Team (5) and 2nd Team (2) and the recognition as one of the best teams LHSSA Girls Bowling has ever seen. LeDuff finishes her four years bowling at Central as captain with a combined 172 average, winning 79% of her matches (98-26) and provided tremendous leadership to this year’s roster. With LeDuff as the lone senior on this year’s squad, 2017 looks very bright for these Wildcats to make a run at yet another state championship. Way to go Wildcats, you’re forever champions! In February, RAVE Performing Arts Company of Central was invited to perform at the opening of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Luncheon downtown. RAVE was represented by several outstanding RAVE students and they did a wonderful job performing. We love how excited these girls were to offer their talent for such an amazing cause. Aside from teaching the performing arts, we love to present the kids with opportunities to use their talents to give back to our community. Way to go, girls!

Our week-long journey included an additional master class with Cris along with a New Orleans flare New Year’s Eve masquerade ball. Ringing in our 2016 New Year was welcomed by an outstanding featured performance to a sold out crowd in our New Orleans Mercedes Superdome, one to be cherished by all.

By Head Soccer Coach Wes Melton In 2008 I deployed with the 927th Sapper CO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Afghanistan. A relatively new unit, we had to take volunteers from all over the state and even a few from outside of Louisiana in order to be fully manned for our mission. One of the volunteers was Jonnie Stiles from Highland Ranch, Colorado. Jonnie volunteered to serve his country with a group of guys he had never meet and knew nothing about. He met the Unit in Baton Rouge just a few days prior to us leaving for Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. When we met Stiles we knew instantly that this guy would be a great fit and become family. We learned quickly that Jonnie was a man of his word, dependable, and would lead by example. Upon arriving in country Stiles had become a team leader and was a gunner for the Route Clearance missions. Stiles became the go-to guy for the younger soldiers. They would go to him for guidance, when they needed to be corrected, and even sometimes for a little comfort. On 13 Nov 2008 Stiles was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near

his vehicle outside of Jalalabad Afghanistan. The loss of Stiles had a huge impact on the 927th. We lost a friend, a leader, a brother. When we returned home from deployment we all had an empty space in our hearts and will always treasure the short time we had with Jonnie. The way I have chosen to honor and remember Jonnie is by using the number 27. I use the number 27 because of our unit the 927th and in short many times we just say the “27th.” I coach the Central High boys soccer team and each year we select a senior to wear the number 27. We look for the outstanding student athlete of that class. This may not be the best player but he will always have the qualities that made Jonnie a special guy. We first look for a student that is academically sound, leads from the front, and is a great teammate. The first recipient of the “27” award was Garrett Miles, class of 2011. The following players were awarded their senior years Juan Rameriz, Class of 2012, Drake Cowart, Class of 2013, Dean Roberts, Class of 2014, and Ross Melton, Class of 2016.

Central Bulls Place 3rd in Biddy Regional Tournament

On Sunday, March 13, 2016, Megan Murray, of Central, competed in her first meet in the 2016 LRG State Meet at CG’s Gymnastics. She competed at Level 1 on the floor, vault, bars, and beam. With an All Around score of 37.575, Megan came in first place and is the All Around State Champion for her age level. Megan began taking gymnastics in the Fall of 2010 at the age of 3 at Leaps and Bounds for about a year. In August of 2014, she started taking gymnastics at CG ’s Gymnastics and was coached by Susan Naquin. Roy Ulrich became her coach in January of 2015. At the end of the season, Megan decided she wanted to start competing. She tried out and joined the Pre-Team in June of 2015. Even though she was on Pre-Team, she competed as a Level 1 gymnast at the State Meet. In June, Megan will be moving up to Level 3. She is the daughter of John and Kristi Murray and is a third grade student at Amite Christian Academy. Congratulations Megan!

Megan Murray: Gymnastics All Around State Champion

The CCA Comite Chapter left the CCA Louisiana State Convention with bragging rights for the next two years after winning the “Best Chefs Award” at the Statewide Cook-off. In the field of 15 chapters participating in the Cook-Off, the winning dish was Comite’s Shrimp Pistolettes. The recipe consisted of hollowing out individual pistolettes, filling it with shrimp and accompanying sauce and frying it in a black iron pot. Guests and fellow cooking participants all agreed it was the best dish and a panel of three guest judges from the Baton Rouge area concurred. “It was an honor to be involved in the CCA State Convention this year,” Comite chapter president Mike Gardner said. “There was great food

and even better people participating in the event. We are grateful to hold this honor until the next convention in 2018. Special thanks to TJ Johnson, Brad Smith and the rest of the crew for their hard work in preparing and serving the meal.” The Chapter Cook-off was held outside of the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center where the convention was held. The CCA Louisiana State Convention is a two-day event during which representatives and members from the 29 CCA chapters around the state gather for updates on the organization. It is also a time to honor those whose volunteer efforts have shaped CCA Louisiana’s conservation work with the Hall of Fame awards ceremony and dinner.

Faith Rispone is Miss Louisiana Pre-Teen Pageant Finalist

Central resident Faith Rispone has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss Louisiana Pageant in the Pre-Teen Division. The pageant will be held in Baton Rouge from July 7 through 9, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza hotel. The winner will move on to the national pageant in California. Faith is 12 years old and her activities include drawing, reading, running, swimming, cooking, and baking. She also enjoys 5K races, gymnastics, acting, and walking her dogs.
