Local mothers and babies are in danger of losing crucial services due to a steady decline in the flow of dollars to the Women, Infants and Children program.

WIC has been a constant presence in Enumclaw, providing food vouchers and education about proper parenting and nutri-tion. The program benefits expectant moth-ers, moms with kids and children up to 5

years of age.WIC representatives are in Enumclaw

every Tuesday, setting up shop in the J.J. Smith building.

But the WIC offerings, which seem uni-versally accepted as beneficial, could disap-pear from Enumclaw. Budget troubles have prompted Public Health – Seattle and King County to announce the planned closure of several offices, including the Auburn facility.

The state Supreme Court and the Legislature are locked in a snake dance over school funding with the showdown looming for the 2015 Legislative session.

The court unanimously found the state of Washington in contempt for not complying with the Court’s Jan. 5 2012 McCleary v. Washington order, which directed the Legislature to ful-fill its funding obligation as stated in Article IX of the state Constitution.

The Constitutional clause reads: “It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the educa-tion of all children residing within its borders, without distinction or prefer-ence on account of race, color, caste, or sex.”

Enumclaw School District Superintendent Mike Nelson wrote in an email Sept. 13, “The Board of Directors and I have been following the McCleary case closely for the past several years. The Legislature set their deadline of 2018 to meet the intent of this lawsuit. We are encouraged that this latest ruling will result in positive

Enumclaw’s WIC office is a satellite oper-ation of the Auburn office and would go away with the Auburn closure.

Local WIC supporters aren’t about to go down without a fight.

Mayor Liz Reynolds has jumped into the fray, requesting a meeting with county officials, and members of the Enumclaw City Council are joining other communities in adopting formal resolu-tions opposing cuts to the WIC program.

In Enumclaw, Helen Countryman was an early advocate, contacting Reynolds personally and stepping before the coun-cil during that group’s Sept. 8 meeting. Countryman is a Public Health nurse and works for King County, but directed her council comments as a private citizen of Enumclaw.

If the local office is shuttered, Countryman pointed out, low-income families will face the prospect of traveling to Kent for WIC offerings. Aside from the decline in health services, she pointed to

the economic impact facing local grocery stores when there are fewer vouchers being redeemed. Families qualifying for WIC services receive vouchers good for $400 worth of food monthly.

The numbers aren’t inconsequential, Countryman said, as nearly half the chil-dren born in Enumclaw receive WIC services. She also rebuffed the notion that WIC exists only to serve the chronically unemployed. There are plenty of working poor, she said, who qualify for services.

Proposed closures to Public Health offices, along with the WIC impacts, has not escaped legislative notice.

Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, an Enumclaw resident, spoke at the Sept. 8 council meeting, adding her support for keep-ing the local WIC office operating. Also, Rep. Christopher Hurst provided a letter that was read into the record, adding his support.

The issue moved into sharper focus this week when King County released its 2015 budget, which includes closure of Auburn’s Public Health clinic.

Magic Strings would like to thank the Rotary Club of Enumclaw. Because of its generous donation, much-needed adjust-ments and repairs were made to violins and cellos. The instruments now sound better and will be easier for our students to play.

THANK YOU

public school funding dur-ing the 2015 session with a trajectory of fully meeting the intent by 2018.”

Contempt findingIn the January contempt

finding, Chief Justice Barbara A. Madsen wrote the state “failed” to submit a funding plan by April 30. Madsen wrote, “Sanctions and other remedial mea-sures are held in abeyance,” to allow the Legislature to comply by the end of the 2015 session.

The legislators will pass a two-year budget in 2015, which is a long session. The 2014 session was short, 60 days, where mostly budget adjustments were consid-ered, while more complex budget measures are moved to the long sessions, 105 days.

“If by adjournment of the 2015 legislative session the State has not purged the contempt by comply-ing with the court’s order, the court will reconvene to impose sanctions and other remedial measures as nec-essary,” Madsen wrote.

Separation of Powers

In the state’s brief, filed in August, concern-ing a potential contempt

finding, Senior Assistant Attorney General David A Stolier described the con-tempt finding as a “slip-pery slope.”

Stolier wrote, “It is appropriate for the Court to maintain pressure on the Legislature to contin-ue working toward con-stitutional compliance; it is not appropriate for the Court to hold the State in contempt because the Legislature did not pass a bill or resolution.”

Stolier added in the state’s brief, “The true measure of the State’s progress will be the actions the Legislature takes in the 2015 session.”

The state brief also addressed the issue of sep-aration of powers: “The Court’s exercise of its power still must be guided by separation of powers limitations and by other constitutional limitations and principles…. In the context of this case, the constitutional concern is that a sanction may invade or effectively assume con-trol of the taxing and/or appropriation powers reserved by our constitu-tion to the Legislature.”

Court’s ResponseMadsen addressed the

issue of separation of pow-ers in her contempt rul-ing.

“The State has sug-gested throughout these proceedings that the court may be approaching its constitutional bounds and entering into political and policy matters reserved to the legislature,” she wrote. “But as the court has repeatedly stated, it does not wish to dictate the means by which the legislature carries out its constitutional respon-sibility or otherwise directly involve itself in the choices and trade-offs that are uniquely within the legislature’s purview. Rather, the court has ful-filled its constitutional role to determine whether the State is violating con-stitutional commands, and having held that it is, the court has issued orders within its authority directing the State to rem-edy its violation, deferring to the legislature to deter-mine the details.”

Madsen wrote the Court is not attempting to get the Legislature’s atten-tion, rather the Court, “…expects them to be obeyed even though they are directed to a coordinate branch of government. When the orders are not followed, contempt is the lawful and proper means of enforcement in the orderly administration of justice.”

The Enumclaw High School volleyball program put on its inaugural alumni tournament earlier this month. There were four teams made up of 24 former Enumclaw volleyball players. Gradu-ates from 1992-2013 were represented. “On My Hip” walked away victorious, beating “The Hornet Has-Beens” two games to none. The winning squad consisted of, from left, Kati (Hronek) Genther, Renae (Van Dam) Hanson, Wendy (Bennion) Richtmyer, Amy (Magley) Wheeler, Erin (Decker) Pugmire and Lindsey (Koopman) Patterson. The Plateau’s high school golfers have achieved phe-nomenal success during the early part of the season.

Through matches of last

weekend, all teams sport-ed perfect records. Both the Enumclaw High boys and girls squads were sit-ting pretty at 5-0, as were the White River girls. Just a half-step behind were

the 4-0 White River boys. Every victory was made more important by virtue of being a league contest.

Perhaps the most note-worthy win came Sept. 8 when the White River girls knocked off Fife by a deci-sive 63-33 margin. The Trojans have won the South Puget Sound League 2A title the past four seasons.

“That was a huge win

for us,” said junior stand-out Sydnee Scott. “We have finished second to them for three years and we were excited to finally beat them.”

Scott took medalist hon-ors in four of her team’s first five matches. Juniors Maci Goethals, Dani Barbee, and Jordanne Fray, along with senior Amanda Lance, have teamed up to punish the opposition so far.

In a twisted tale of four distinctly different quarters, the White River football team lost its season opener Friday night 35-13.

The Hornets fell at Fife High, play-ing just the second game on Fife’s spiffy new Fieldturf facility. Until this season, Fife was one of the few schools in the region still sporting natural grass conditions.

The first half ended with White River leading 7-0 and Fife guilty of nothing but self-inflicted wounds.

During those opening periods, the Trojans fumbled the ball away three times and tossed an interception. Fife fumbled a fourth time but managed to recover.

For their part, the Hornets found the end zone midway through the second quarter. A 29-yard scoring toss from Dustin France to Garrett Severson capped an impressive 11-play drive in which France com-pleted all four of his passing attempts and carried the ball four times.

Aside from the scoring drive, the first half ended with White River punting three times and losing the

ball on downs twice. The second half was nightmarish

for the Hornets, as the host Trojans scored touchdowns on all five of their possessions.

White River cut the margin to 21-13 early in the fourth quarter when Hunter Hendricks took the ball and raced 69 yards for a touchdown. The drama was short lived, as Fife scored 14 seconds later to regain a two-TD cushion.

Hornet fortunes took a serious hit early in the fourth quarter when France was carried from the field. He suffered a sprain and did not return.

Hornets slammed by Sumnerroad Friday.

The Spartans scored first against Enumclaw Friday with a touchdown by junior running back Josh Riley.

Enumclaw scored next on a 25-yard strike from Scotty Garvin to Jordan Johnson.

The Hornets went up 10-7 by the end of the first quarter when Garrett Berquist nailed a 25-yard

field goal.Trouble came in the sec-

ond frame with Sumner scoring three unanswered touchdowns to make the halftime score 28-10.

The Hornets came out in the third and Garvin ran for six, followed by Berquists’s extra point.

The fourth quarter was all Sumner with three touchdowns.

Schedules for outdoor sports are subject to change due to unpredictable weather.

Heroin, meth are bigger problem on Plateau than many realize

In regards to Heath Rainwater’s article in the (Sept. 3) Courier-Herald, Church Corner, which I found to be in touch with what is going on with the drug culture here on the Plateau.

Heroin and meth are a much big-ger problem than some people are aware of. I was so glad to see that Mr. Rainwater addressed so many issues that we face as a community. Children are orphaned because of drug abuse and parents are losing their kids due to the overwhelming drug use here. The actual number of overdoses are not reported to the public. Not everyone dies from an overdose.

I am a paralegal and have sev-eral clients who are dealing with the death of a loved one due to habitual drug abuse. I heard first-hand that there was a bad batch of heroin that came around dur-ing the summer and I know of at least four people who died from its use. This has ripped families apart

and the rehab centers are f looded with calls about meth and heroin. The police are working with a task force that meets and discusses the latest issues in the “war on drugs.” Educating is their main focus, but some parents wonder if all the drug education in schools could be add-ing to the allure of drugs, or mak-ing students desensitized to it.

Drug addiction knows no race, color, religion or tribe, and is an equal opportunity offender. Even the undercover police who work with dealers large and small are at risk of addiction. It is a dangerous line that they walk in order to do their job, but a necessary one. It wasn’t that long ago that an officer was let go for stealing from the evi-dence room.

Addiction can touch any fam-ily. We have all heard the saying “a family that prays together stays together,” and think they are the perfect family, but in fact could very well have a son or daughter with an addiction to these power-ful drugs. No family is immune to it, and if you have a teen, are a teen, or know someone that is and is dealing with these issues you can go to Enumclaw Youth and Family Services on Cole street, or you can call them at 360-825-4586. Adults

with addiction issues can go to Sound Mental Health in Auburn and call them at 253-876-7610, or Valley Cities in Auburn at 253-336-4577. An addict is someone who can’t stop drinking or doing drugs, and it interferes with their day-to-day activities, as well as hurting relationships or putting their job in jeopardy. Finding yourself at this crossroad, knowing that there is help and getting it are two dif-ferent things. Some say they aren’t worth the trouble, and others say I don’t want to stop. They say the cravings make them give in when they have decided to quit, and quit-ting is impossible. Quitting for any reason besides yourself is futile to recovery. Quitting can make you a better father, mother, son or daughter, brother or sister, and can make you whole again. Doing it alone is not helping your cause. Having the support of a therapist or group of people who are dealing with the same issues is so impor-tant to staying sober.

Think about it, would you rather lose everything and everyone you love, include yourself in that list, or would you rather not be dependent on a substance that runs your life?

There is no mention of education in the Constitution. If that is the case, and it is, why is the federal government so deeply involved? Studies and policies variously labeled: federalism, A Nation At Risk, No Child Left Behind, and Common Core Standards are now being hotly debated as our new K-12 school year begins. To understand the cur-rent state of education in the light of history, let’s go back and look at it.

When the Constitution was created in 1787, the assump-tion under federal-ism was that power would be divided between the states and the federal gov-ernment. Education would be the under control of the states, as would marriages and divorces.

This was pretty much the standard for many years, with each state doing whatever it thought best for its constitu-ents when it came to education.

When the 14th Amendment of the Constitution was ratified in 1870, new terms arose to deal with the ending of slavery: States were forbidden from, “depriving any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Federalism and the 14th Amendment clashed with the creation of Jim Crow laws enacted in the South. Blacks and whites did not have equal education.

The terms “due process of law” and “equal protection of the laws” first formed the basis of the landmark decision in the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision of 1896, which enshrined states’ rights to segregate blacks and whites – as long as the education was equal.

Nearly 60 years later the Court reversed itself in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas decision. In this judgment the Supreme Court ruled that separate education of blacks and whites was not equal and therefore must end. The Civil Rights movement began as a result and the federal government forcibly stepped in to Southern schools to end segregation.

In 1981, during the presidency of the conservative Ronald Reagan, a study came out called “A Nation at Risk.” The report was a “scathing appraisal of public edu-cation” according to an article by Sarah Garland in the Aug. 17, 2014, Christian Science Monitor article entitled, “US Education: How We Got Where We Are Today.”

A federal commission, made up officials from business, government and education, had studied U.S. schools and found they were not competitive with the U.S.’s current rival at that time, Japan. SAT and standardized test scores were dropping. American students were not competitive on the world market. Something had to be done. “Twenty-three million Americans were functionally illiterate.” Worse still, American and their schools were complacent

Well, in case you haven’t noticed, summer has slipped away and I’m not even sure I saw it leave.

Compared to the rest of America, summer always comes late around here and it disappears far too quickly, though I must admit this year it’s lingered much longer than usual. I hate to see it go. Contrary to many, I thoroughly enjoy 80 and 90 degree days and it never gets so hot I complain. (On second thought, I recall one afternoon in Phoenix when it hit 118 degrees and that got to be a little too much.)

Officially, fall began Tuesday, the 23rd. However, if you ignore that astronomical fact, autumn sort of sneaks up on you, as though glid-ing in on silent rollerblades. Our garden greens are going to seed, the lawn has finally stopped grow-ing, there are patches of fog around the Krain corner and the evening chill requires a light jacket. Yet, it seems like I didn’t fully realize the autumn shift until I abandoned my

usual diet at the Puyallup Fair and bit into a hot scone dripping with raspberry jam.

Yes, indeed, we’re about to nestle into those gray, overcast, Northwest days of Morris Graves. Yet, we shouldn’t underestimate how colorful our fall actually is and, by the time you read this, the brilliant, scarlet splash of our Railroad Street maples may already be under way. Our fall isn’t as bril-liant or multi-hued as an awesome New England display – we lack the silver and varying shades of red – but nevertheless our autumn color is surely preferable to the monotonous, seasonless drone of

the Southwest. I might recommend a drive down the Green Valley Road.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are just around the corner. On a personal note, I can look for-ward to my birthday in November. Owing to a gross political over-sight, which I’ve labored in vain to correct, neither Halloween nor my birthday has yet been canonized as an official, national holiday.

Late in the fall, Linda Kittleson will be painting her pretty sea-sonal/Christmas scenes on the windows of downtown stores. And then, autumn will also slip away as silently as it first appeared and we’ll welcome the chill of winter sliding down from the uplands, this time on ice skates. And with it we’ll ring in the holidays, my favor-ite time of year. (Decorated plas-tic Christmas trees have already appeared in Target.)

As Sinatra was fond of singing, “The Best Is Yet To Come.”

and crumbling, “threatening the very fabric of society.”This report sent off a shock wave across the nation,

according to Garland, that is still being felt today. Schools are still in sitting in the corners with dunce caps and many of the principles from “A Nation at Risk” are now ingrained in American education.

The “Nation at Risk” report had five legs now found in the controversial Common Core Standards. These standards were meant to solve the problems in educa-tion. They are found today in 41 states: “improving content, raising standards, overhauling the teaching profession, adding time to the school day and year, and improving leadership and fiscal support,” according to Garland.

The Republican George W. Bush administration and a Republican Congress passed “No Child Left Behind,” which helped institute standardized testing across the nation. It also created the stigma of “failed schools” which we in Washington state and elsewhere are dealing with now under Democratic President Barack Obama who instituted “Race to the Top” and allowed for waiv-ers to give time to the states to conform to NCLB.

Washington state recently rejected being forced to have its teachers evaluated by these standardized tests and the state lost $40 million in federal funding. Approximately 80 percent of its schools are now “failing” and are required to send letters to parents notifying them of their status.

There are a number of ironies that scream at me from this twisted educational history: Republicans complain that government is too big, yet it was Republicans who unconstitutionally encroached upon the role of the states over education.

A Democratic president elected with the aid of unions is now punishing union members in Washington state for refusing to obey NCLB, a program enacted by a Republican president. Meanwhile, the nation that spawned “A Nation at Risk,” Japan, has been in the economic doldrums for more than 20 years.

This is all a little mind numbing. Politics and logic seem to be mutually exclusive terms, especially when it comes to public education.

Well, the autumn equinox is here (Sept. 22). Now I don’t know about you, but I am amazed at how quickly summer slipped away. But as they say, “Time flies when you are hav-ing fun!” So although I am thoroughly enjoying the fantastic weather of these mid-Septem-ber days, I am looking forward to seeing the leaves change color and feeling that special crispness in the air each morning. Along with the fall colors and coolness, autumn also brings new classes in a new school year.

All that is wrapped up in this change of seasons makes me reflect on the idea of newness.

Have you ever thought about how much

we like things that are new? Novelty has its own special appeal, doesn’t it? I think this is true because there is a special sense of excitement that comes with something new or untried. Think along the lines of riding a roller coaster for the

first time! So although we all may tend to pre-fer the status quo and hesitate facing change, we actually do like the new over the old.

Well friends, God is in the business of making things new! The creator of the universe continuously has his hand at work in his creation. And though we may easily sense that in autumn color, it also includes his work in each of us, and in each of the churches on the Plateau.

For example, Calvary Presbyterian is

experiencing some autumn newness as God is hard at work in the congregation. Calvary is adding a new contemporary praise worship service at 11 on Sunday mornings beginning Oct. 5 — everyone is welcome. And given that I am an interim or transitional pastor, Calvary will soon be welcoming a new pastor as well!

God’s working newness in our midst is always good. In churches across the Plateau new ministries and programs are kicking

off as the school year unfolds. Friends, God is in the “making things

new” business. Thank the Lord that he continues to work on all of us. Because of Jesus we are never stuck in our past, as we can enjoy the excitement of a new begin-ning simply by coming to him and asking in faith for one. Thank God that he leads us forward into new days and new seasons.

What is it that he wants to do that is new in your life?

All can enjoy the excitement of a new beginningChurch Corner

Pets often make ideal companions. They are around when a person needs support, they can provide protection for those living alone, they’re always willing to lend an ear to problems, and many tend to offer uncondition-al love.

Seniors facing an empty nest or the loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy their spirits. Studies have shown that seniors can benefit both mentally and physically from having a pet around. Pets can alle-viate anxiety, depression and boredom.

While pets can provide comfort and companion-ship, they remain a sig-nificant responsibility. Seniors should find an animal that will fit in with their lifestyles. This is an important consideration for those seniors who travel frequently or have mobility issues. In addi-tion, men and women liv-ing in senior communities

or assisted living facilities should determine if there are any pet restrictions in place.

Those seniors who have decided that a dog will be the best fit can choose among several breeds that may be a good match for their needs. When select-ing a dog, consider both size and temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle and will need less maintenance. They are easily carried and won’t take as long to bathe and groom. Smaller dogs also consume less food than larger breeds, reducing the expense of dog food and the hassle of wrangling large, heavy bags of chow.

Temperament is also important, as some breeds tend to be more easygoing than others. Larger breeds may be preferable to a smaller breeds, which tend to be hyperactive. However, always remember there are pros and cons to each breed, and each dog will demonstrate his own personality traits. The following are some dogs that can be especially compatible with seniors.

PugEqually playful and will-

ing to be a lap dog, the pug requires little exercise and grooming. The breed is typically nonaggressive and submissive. Pugs are good-natured and playful; they don’t often bark and are easy to train.

Shih TzuThe Shih Tzu lives for

attention, but this breed can be dominant and dif-ficult to train. The Shih Tzu will be alert to its sur-roundings and, despite its small stature, can be a good watchdog.

PomeranianPomeranians look like

big balls of fur and can bring a smile to an own-er’s face. The breed tends to be perky, can display dominance and can be difficult to train. Because Pomeranians can be dog-aggressive, they may be best as the only pet in the house.

Yorkshire terrierThe Yorkie is a diminu-

tive breed in size only, as they tend to have exuber-ant personalities that dwarf their stature. The ideal lap dog, Yorkies want to lie

around and lounge, though some do like to bark. If the fur is kept short in a “puppy cut,” the dog can be easy to maintain.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

This medium-sized dog hails from Wales and typi-cally requires only mod-erate exercise and little grooming. They are easy to train and moderately dominant. They don’t bark excessively, and they often get along with other dogs.

SchnauzerAvailable in three sizes,

Schnauzers are good com-panions and protectors. This is an intelligent and loyal breed and will need to be kept amused to stave off boredom.

Brussels GriffonThese dogs do not shed,

but they will require pro-fessional grooming at least once every 3 months. If socialized early, the Griffon can be a good companion but will likely remain wary of strangers. They are good watchdogs and devoted to their owners.

By Dennis Box and Kevin Hanson

The Courier-Herald’s annual September Best of the Plateau

edition once again features the wide array of businesses and services found in the area.

From the best dining, shopping, healthcare or schools, the Best of the Plateau highlights the region and all the people.

An array of treasures can be found in the Best of the Plateau pages, some well known and some tucked away.

Along with the plethora of businesses and services available on the Plateau, there are activities for all ages to enjoy, often costing little more than gas for the car and snacks for the kids.

A good resource for the activities and entertain-ment are city websites. Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Buckley and Sumner all list city activities and other events on their web-

sites along with a links to resources in the county and state.

In The PastHistorical societies are a

fun and educational way to discover the past and see the affect on the Plateau today.

• The Enumclaw Historical Museum is well organized and a treasure of information. The displays are interesting and well thought out.

• The Black Diamond Museum has one of the best coal mining displays found at any venue. The history of coal mining and Black Diamond is presented and there is more than mining. All aspects of the town are preserved.

• The White River Museum features the rich history of the logging industry.

• Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society is an excellent resource for his-tory of Bonney Lake and the surrounding area. The society has monthly meet-

ings at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of each month at the Public Works Center in Bonney Lake.

Bird WatchingThe Plateau is one of the

best bird watching areas in the state. Perching birds to bald eagles, falcons and red-tailed hawks are com-mon sights.

Cooper’s hawks are iden-tified by the bands on the breast. They are consider-able smaller than a red-tail, and very speedy.

The American kestrel with its slate blue back and rufus colored chest can be seen perched on telephone wires on many of the roads.

Ospreys can be found around the lakes from Black Diamond to Bonney Lake. Watching an osprey go after a fish is a sight.

The dairy farms across the Plateau are an excellent spot to bird watch. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a slow drive along the back roads. Your patience will be rewarded.

Mount RainierAs fall begins and the

end of warm weather nears, it is a very good time to take a trip to Sunrise. The drive to Sunrise off state Route 410 is breathtaking and there are shorts hikes just right for youngsters with Mount Rainier appearing to be within reach.

Other spots to both hike and enjoy the Cascade Range include Mowich Lake.

Mowich Lake is clean, clear and icy cold, fed by a glacier that clings to the mountain, astoundingly close. A hand-ful of trails offer hiking opportunities for all fitness levels, from those who need hours to cover a couple of well-maintained miles to those who challenge moun-tain goats when it comes to sure-footed scrambling abil-ity and endurance.

The truly ambitious out-door enthusiasts plant a tent in one of the campground’s 10 groomed sites where no fires are allowed but the vault toilets are clean.

Here are a few hiking

opportunities, as recom-mended by the national park’s website:

• Rain Forest Nature Trail (.3 miles): Starting across from the Carbon River Entrance Station, this short loop trail takes visi-tors through a fine example of a temperate rain forest.

• Chenuis Falls Trail (7.4 miles): 3.5 miles from the Carbon River Entrance, cross the Carbon River on the foot log and follow the forested trail to the falls. Use caution crossing the river. Check to make sure the foot log is not washed out before attempting this hike.

• Green Lake Trail (9.6 miles): Trail begins 3.3 miles east of Carbon River Entrance, along the Carbon River Road. Hike through dense forest to a beauti-ful mountain lake. Take a short side trip for a view of Ranger Falls.

• Carbon Glacier Trail (17 miles): From the Ipsut Creek trail head, hike along the glacier-fed Carbon River to view the termi-

nus of Carbon Glacier. Stay away from the terminus of the glacier Rocks fall and bounce off the glacier as the ice melts and could cause serious injuries.

• Tolmie Peak Trail (6.5 miles): Beginning from the north side of Mowich Lake, this hike passes the beauti-ful subalpine Eustice Lake on its way to the Tolmie Peak Lookout.

Sky StoneMore than 4-feet tall

and 12-feet wide, the Sky Stone is an ancient boulder that sits in the midst of a residential development in Bonney Lake.

According to an article written by Theresa De Lay in 2013, scientific investiga-tion found the stone was probably used by indige-nous Plateau dwellers as a tool to calculate astronomi-cal and seasonal changes.

For more information about Sky Stone contact the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society.

I’m Grateful for the Support ofMy Community.

I became an Edward Jones nancial advisor because I wanted to be part of a rm that truly puts its clients’ needs rst. I believe our long-term investment philosophy, conveniently located o ce and personal, face-to-face approach show our commitment to helping the people in the communities we serve every single day.

On behalf of Edward Jones and my branch o ce, it gives me great pride to have been voted the Best of the Plateau. This recognition wouldn’t have been possible without your support, and for that I’m grateful.

Firewood, Fuel& Stoves

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.

As summer winds down it is time to take stock of what worked and what did not in the garden. There are many new plants and products out there, but these products deserve three green thumbs up because they deliver what they promise.

Copper Rain ChainsThese look great as a

replacement for ugly gut-ters in your garden but do they last in our very wet climate? Three green thumbs up for the heavy duty copper rain chain that has been directing water into my rain bar-rel for the last 10 years. There has been no rust-ing or broken parts and the only maintenance is that every few years I take it down to hose out any collected debris to keep the water f lowing. During the depths of winter it is nice to see the cascade of f lowing water as one cup overf lows and spills into the next so every rainy day becomes a water show. Rain chains now come in

many designs and styles and can be shortened by removing the water-catch cups to fit the height of your water barrel or to take the water right to the ground level and into a gravel-filled catch basin or rain garden. Rain chains may be very ornamental replacements for gutters, but they are also envi-ronmentally friendly and lower the water bill by harvesting rain water to recycle onto plants.

Advanced Mosquito Control with

ThermaCELL lanternThis new product begins

with the natural repelling properties of a citronella candle and takes it up a notch by using oil-infused tabs in a battery-powered

lantern. There are no cords, no sound and no fragrance. I suspect this lantern was designed for camping trips but it works great in the gar-den or on a patio. A pro-pane switch heats up the oil and controls the slow release of the repellent.

You will need to reload the citronella car-tridge when the scent wears out and a color indi-cator tells you when this is needed. Tiny propane cartridges come with the lantern and can be reor-dered online as needed. The ThermaCELL lantern is at chain stores and box stores or you can order it from Amazon for less than $30.

Dwarf Dahlias that don’t need staking

bulbs which mean you must protect them from winter weather. The saf-est way is to dig the tuber out of the ground in late autumn after the foliage turns yellow on the plant. Cut off the remaining stems and leaves and let the tuber air dry indoors for a few days. Then place the dahlia tuber into a paper bag and store in a cold but not freezing garage or shed. Replant your dahlias in May for another summer of blooms. Compact dahlias including the hot pink Art Deco and soft yellow and

blush Monet are available from Longfield Gardens or your local nursery in the spring. Lazy gardeners or gambling gardeners that don’t want to dig dahlia tubers each fall can cut the stems to the ground in November and cover the tops with a tarp or a pile of sword fern fronds to keep out winter rains. If you keep dahlia tubers in the ground dry all winter they will survive our Western Washington winters with-out digging.

Compact Pee Gee hydrangeas

The hydrangea panicu-lata or Pee Gee hydrangea is the tree-like hydrangea

that thrives in full sun but with cone-shaped creamy white turning to russet f lowers. This late bloomer looks spectacu-lar in the fall garden but the old varieties needed lots of room. A new dwarf Pee Gee called Bobo Pee Gee is now available that grows 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall. Expect it to grow tall-er and wider in our mild climate as I never trust the sizes on those nursery tags. Compact Bobo Pee Gee hydrangea is a Proven Winners plant that you should be able to find at area nurseries.
