Sprachenzentrum Language Centre Kristi Julian Associate Professor East Tennessee State University USA The incidence of environmental disasters around the world continues to increase, as does the losses resulting from them. The impact of environmental disasters affects individuals, communities, economies, and the environment. As stated by the United Nations Environment Programme, these disasters have the potential to “destroy infrastructure, displace populations, and fundamentally undermine human security. They also compound poverty and tear apart the fabric of sustainable development”. Significant occurrences of environmental disasters in North America will be discussed in this presentation to examine the awareness and preparedness for appropriate response, but more importantly, the need to adapt in order to ensure an appropriate response. “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” ― Leon C.
