School students in particular have the ability to transfer knowledge to their parents and communities. These students are the future of land management in the Lachlan and hence a priority stakeholder for the CMA With this in mind the Environmental Education Project has been developed and involves the following: Environmental planning process for schools In consultation with catchment schools and the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre, the Lachlan CMA is undertaking an environmental planning process with ten targeted schools across the catchment, with the aim of developing skills and relationships in planning for elements such as water, waste, biodiversity, energy, land management and working with the community. Called the SEED (Schools Environmental Education Development), this process replaces the former SEMP (School Environmental Management Plan) process to reflect changes in educational policy from the State Government. This part of the project includes assistance for schools to release teachers to assist with planning and some assistance for environmental works that are planned for within the process. Kids Teaching Kids Conferences The Lachlan CMA has enjoyed great success in a partnership with the Kids Teaching Kids organisation to run two Kids Teaching Kids processes and resulting conferences with more than twenty five schools across the catchment. In 2012 there will be another two conferences held - one in the east and one in the west of the catchment. These conferences will once again showcase the environmental learning and works being undertaken by schools in the Lachlan, and will provide inspiration to other teachers and students to undertake good works for the environment. Kids Teaching Kids has some great features, such as the empowerment of school students and the linking of their ideas to the wider community, through its main theme of transferring an environmental message For more information on Kids Teaching Kids head to www.kidsteachingkids. com.au Top image: Students enjoy Zoomobile visit at Forbes Kids Teaching Kids conference

Environmental Education The Lake Cowal Conservation Centre (LCCC)The LCCC is a community educational facility where school students, land managers and community members can learn about and experience a variety of environmental and natural resource management issues. The Lake Cowal Conservation Centre (LCCC) is the result of a partnership between the West Wyalong High School (WWHS), Department of Training and Education (DET), the Lake Cowal Foundation Ltd (LCF), Barrick Australia Ltd and the Lachlan CMA. Situated 35kms North East of West Wyalong and 3km south of the Cowal Gold Mine, at Lake Cowal, the LCCC caters for a wide sector of the community, providing a practical learning environment and a place where detailed studies can be undertaken. One of the main benefits provided through the LCCC is an enhanced level of understanding about how agriculture, conservation and industry can be integrated in a sustainable way, in the context of the local environment.

Facilities at the LCCCA modern barn provides an excellent facility to deliver training and information, whilst the adjoining property and remnant bushland, provide the perfect location to set up demonstration sites, innovative research trials and implement conservation projects such as wetland rehabilitation, revegetation and vegetation management.

Who can visit/use the LCCC?• research organisations and universities• schools• TAFE groups• NRM Groups• Community groups

Other work with schoolsLachlan CMA staff are also available for talks and excursions on environmental issues for schools. School activities are also often undertaken through the District Engagement Plan process at the local district level. The Lachlan CMA also has an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage unit that is able to work with schools to deliver tailored cultural heritage learning, participation in the NAIDOC debating competition and River Dreaming educational canoe tours.
