Warner Bros. is a leader in environmental stewardship and “green” business practices.

All employees, from film and television production to behind-the-scenes office personnel, participate in the Studioʼs many environmental programs.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY –Warner Bros Studios:saves over $1 million annually (and growing) through energy efficiency saves enough energy to power 100 sound stages or 500 homes for a year prevents 6,471 tons of greenhouse gases, the equivalent of planting 1.6 million trees installed a 72 kilowatt solar electrical system, the first of its kind in the industry, that will generate enough renewable energy to power 25 homes for the next 30 years

WASTE REDUCTION & RECYCLING - Warner Bros Studios: recycles more than it throws away, over 60% of the waste stream recycles enough paper each year to save about 2,300 barrels of oil, 10,000 trees and 4 million gallons of water recycles thousands of tons of paper, cardboard, beverage containers, wood, green waste, metal, film, videos, CDʼs, DVDʼs and electronic waste donates set walls, set pieces, props, draperies and costumes to local schools and community organizations through Environmental Initiativesʼ donation program Encore: A Materials Reuse Partnership

ENVIRONMENTAL PROCUREMENT - Warner Bros Studios: prints all business cards, letterhead and copy stock with recycled paper buys water based paints for all sets and facility interiors buys re-refined oil for all fleet trucks buys parking bumpers made from recycled plastic buys plastic lumber for truck siding and decking made from recycled plastic saves money and energy by purchasing remanufactured toner cartridges

EDUCATION & OUTREACH - Warner Bros Studios: plants trees at local schools annually partners with and supports local schools and community organizations participates in a statewide environmental education partnership donates training equipment and supplies (e.g. for editing, wood working) donates food to local shelters daily

GREEN BUILDING - Warner Bros Studios: built and operates the first “green” building in the entertainment industry, 35% more efficient than standard buildings uses “green,” non-toxic cleaning products uses alternative and environmentally preferable construction materials

Reduce Waste – Bring a mug to work and use it every day instead of disposable cups. (Or call us at 818-

954-3470 and we’ll give you one!) – Bring your lunch to work with reusable utensils in a reusable lunch bag. – Write your name on your water bottle then refill it several times before recycling it. – Use paper that’s already been printed on one side for scratch paper. – Reduce subscriptions by routing trades, magazines and newspapers. – Use routing slips to circulate documents throughout the office. – Remove your name from distribution lists for reports you don’t really need (or reduce the

frequency). – Always make double-sided copies (most WB copiers default to double-sided). – Avoid printing email or other documents that can be read electronically.

Recycle Everything – At Warner Bros. you can recycle bottles, cans, paper, cardboard, metal, wood, CD/DVDs,

film, tape, paint, batteries, toner cartridges, green waste and electronic waste. – Call Environmental Initiatives at 4-3470 for paper or beverage container recycling bins. – Make recycling easy by making sure your bins have proper signage and are located in high

traffic areas. – Send used toner cartridges to the Main Lot Mailroom in Bldg. 156 marked “Recycle.” – Donate your old office furniture and equipment to local schools and non-profit

organizations through Environmental Initiatives’ donation program Encore: A Materials Reuse Partnership.

Buy Recycled and Earth Friendly Products – Buy products with high levels of “post-consumer” content (e.g. paper, plastic lumber [e.g.

WB parking stops and truck stakes], construction materials and office supplies). – Buy cleaning products with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds). – Buy local, non-toxic and organic products.

Conserve Energy – Practice task lighting - if you don’t need a light, turn it off. – Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones - they use less energy,

generate less heat and last much longer. – Exchange halogen torchiere lamps for lamps with efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. – Always keep outside doors and windows closed when the air conditioning is on. – Close your shades during hot summer days and open during cold winter days. – Set thermostats to 75 degrees or higher in summer and 68 degrees or cooler in winter. – Turn off thermostats when leaving home for long periods of time. – Unplug electronics and appliances when leaving home for long periods of time. – Conserve water – it takes electricity to pump it.

Reduce Pollution – Carpool and use public transportation whenever possible, and avoid idling your vehicle. – Video or telephone conference as an alternative to traveling long distances for meetings. – Add indoor plants to clean and freshen indoor air. – Avoid synthetic air fresheners; find the source of the odor and clean it up. – Ask smokers to smoke away from the exits and entrances to your building. – Never throw anything into storm drains, they drain to the L.A. River and the ocean.

Educate and Enlist Your Friends – Create a bulletin board in your area that offers employees earth-saving tips, articles, etc.

(Environmental Initiatives can provide content). – Share what you did to green your last production with your new production. – Join the Warner Bros. EcoAmbassador group. – Log on to www.wbenvironmental.com

As the hub of a production, the Production Office has many opportunities not only to reduce the environmental impact of its own operations but also to encourage other production areas to go “green.” The next two pages list suggestions for greening offices. For more information, see the references listed on the inside back cover.

Live Audiences: • Environmental Initiatives can provide recycling bins to place near audience staging and

seating for collection of beverage containers. (Separate trash receptacles should be placed nearby, available from the Custodial Department.)

• When purchasing promotional gift items, ask your vendor for items with recycled content or other environmental attributes. Also specify the least amount of packaging.

Paper/Cardboard: • Reduce the amount of paper you purchase by limiting distribution lists, using routing slips

instead of multiple copies, making double-sided copies whenever possible, and communicating via email instead of printed memos. Use the backs of single-sided documents as draft paper, and look for formatting changes that could reduce the number of pages you must print (margins, etc.).

• When ordering paper, be sure to buy paper with the highest post-consumer recycled content, ideally non-chlorine bleached. (Copy paper sold at the Mill Store contains 30% post-consumer recycled content and is elemental chlorine-free.)

• Recycle paper in your recycling bins. Keep the white paper free of color paper or other lower grades of paper, such as trades and newspapers (those should go in the Mixed Paper bin). Do not put napkins, cups, tissues, or paper towels in your paper bins – they are not recyclable.

• Recycle cardboard by nesting or flattening boxes and placing them near (not inside) your recycling bins. Recycling is picked up regularly, but if you need an extra pickup, please call the Recycling Hotline.

Food: • To-go containers are not recyclable. Reduce waste by encouraging brown-bag lunches, or

carpool to a restaurant and dine on-site. • Purchase biodegradable cups, plates and cutlery made of corn starch instead of plastic. • Encourage the use of reusable cups, mugs, plates, and utensils in the pantry instead of

disposables. Employees can receive a free recycled glass mug for use in the office. • Paper plates and plastic utensils are not recyclable. Please do not place them, or packaging

of any kind with food on it, in the recycling bin. • Consider purchasing organic, locally grown seasonal fruits and vegetables for your snack

table, they taste better and are healthier for you and the environment. • Recycle empty, rinsed tin cans in your Bottles and Cans recycling bin (soup, tuna cans,

etc.).

Beverages: • All glass jars and bottles and plastic bottles made of plastic types #1 and #2 can be

recycled. Other types are not recyclable and should not be placed in the recycling bins. • Avoid using styrofoam because it doesn’t biodegrade. • Switch to a reusable filter in your coffee maker. • Consider buying organic juices, coffee, tea, milk, etc.

Energy: • Turn off computers, printers, monitors, and copy machines when not in use. • Set computer monitors to sleep mode to save energy when not in use. (Most WB

computers are set automatically. If yours is not [e.g. you have a Mac] you can call MIS help desk to enable the sleep mode for you.

• Turn off the lights when leaving a room. • Use compact fluorescent torchieres and light bulbs (instead of halogen and incandescent). • Keep doors and windows closed when the air conditioning or heating is on.

Miscellaneous: • Productions can get FREE, surplus office supplies, such as binders, file folders, desk trays,

and the like, by visiting the Environmental Initiatives Department in Bldg. 137, Rm. 1013. We will show you to our Encore room, where you can take what you need.

• Recycle toner cartridges by placing them back in the box, taping it closed, and sending it via interoffice mail to the Mail Room in Bldg. 156N marked “Recycle.”

• Recycle videotapes by boxing them up and calling Environmental Initiatives for a pickup. • Recycle CDs, CD-ROMs, and DVDs by boxing them up (separately from the videotapes).

If disks are confidential and must be destroyed, contact Records Management for a shredding bin.

• Batteries can also be recycled either by sending small quantities via inter-office mail to Environmental Initiatives or by collecting larger quantities in a box or bucket for pickup.

• Office supplies and other usable items that are no longer needed can be donated through the Encore program.

Environmental Initiatives staff is happy to assist with research on environmental topics. If your show would like to include an environmental issue in a script or if a cast member, staff, or

crewmember has an environmental question, we are here to help. Give us a call!

Much of the waste generated by film and television production results from the disposal of set-materials. Below are some suggested ways to reduce that waste.

Set walls/set pieces:• Set walls can be reused in-house or donated. Call Television Construction regarding in-

house reuse, or Environmental Initiatives for information on donation and recycling. • Sets can be recycled by stacking them upright in the “Wood Only” 40-yard hoppers,

available from the Labor Department. (If you have to saw the sets, please do so vertically.) Clean wood loads cost 20% less than trash loads.

Other materials: • Recycle scrap steel by calling the Labor Department for delivery to our "Scrap Steel" roll-

off. Other metals (brass, copper, aluminum, etc) are recycled separately. • Large pieces of carpeting, in reusable condition, can be donated. • Plate glass, tempered glass, Plexiglass, Lexan, etc. can be donated or recycled. • We can donate many other types of materials as well, at no charge to the production.

Examples include: leftover lumber and sheet goods, Styrofoam set elements (depending on size and condition), columns, windows, and doors, among others.

Energy: • Turn off catwalk lights when not in use. • Turn off house lights when you leave. • Turn off coffee makers before leaving. • Close elephant doors when the air conditioning is on (some have automatic switches). • Call to have shooting power and HVAC turned off before leaving.

Environmental Initiatives (818) 954-3470

Scaffolding & Lumber: • Reduce wood use by renting reusable

metal scaffolding – contact the Grip Department.

• If using wood, consider certified sustainable lumber (FSC certified).

• Clean, used wood and small cuttings can be donated to schools and nonprofit organizations.

• Clean, used wood not suitable for donation can be recycled.

These simple suggestions can all contribute significantly to a greener production.

Paint: • Follow Safety Department guidelines for handling paint, brushes, and rags - these cannot be

disposed of in regular trash. • Save money by wiping cans clean of paint residue and consolidating unused paint for

donation. Otherwise paint must be disposed of as hazardous waste, which costs double. • Use free, leftover paint from previous productions as primer instead of buying new paint.

Props/Set Dressing: • Props and set dressing elements that were purchased rather than rented can be donated

through Encore to schools and nonprofits at no cost to the production. • The Environmental Initiatives Department can also provide recycling bins, glass mugs, and

other environmental props for set dressing.

Transportation: • Environmental Initiatives can provide assistance in finding alternative fuel and hybrid

vehicles and information for cast, crew, production staff, and for on-screen placement.• Electric vehicles can be charged at the charging station in Lot I, space 20.

Wardrobe: • Request an environmentally friendly garment cleaner when cleaning costumes. Traditional

dry-cleaning uses the toxic chemical perchloroethylene, but nontoxic alternatives such as wet cleaning and GreenEarth cleaning are available.

• Costumes that are no longer being used may be donated, at no cost to the production.

Food choices can have a significant environmental impact, both in terms of the food itself and how it is packaged. Below are some suggested ways to reduce their environmental impact.

Food/condiments: • Consider local/organic sources for produce. • Choose seafood that is abundant, caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways and

low in harmful toxins like mercury and PCB’s. • Donate leftover food instead of throwing it away. • Limit use of plastic plates, utensils or take-out containers – they’re not recyclable.

Beverages:• Recycle plastic and glass bottles, aluminum and tin cans, and glass jars in your Bottles &

Cans recycling bin. Keep a well-labeled recycling bin near Crafts Service area or where people eat and drink, in addition to a trash can.

• Snip plastic six-pack rings, which can endanger ocean birds and sea life.

Miscellaneous:• Recycle cardboard by removing plastic wrap, flattening boxes, and placing them near the

Bottles & Cans recycling bin. • Turn off coffee makers and other service items when not in use and at the end of the day. • Use biodegradable plates, cups and cutlery (if reusable is not an option).

You can neutralize a production’s carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the leading greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change, also known as global warming. Air travel, hotel energy use, rental cars, truck fuel, diesel generators, office and warehouse energy use and shipping are all activities that result in thousands of tons of CO2 emissions. These emissions greatly impact air quality and ultimately climate change, and are referred to as the production’s “carbon footprint.”

In the past, some film producers and actors have counterbalanced this footprint by planting trees to absorb the amount of CO2 from production activities and make their films “carbon neutral.” Today, Warner Bros. has taken this notion further by supporting investments in clean energy technologies like solar and wind power that help reduce reliance on fossil fuel, improve air quality and help stem global warming.

Helpful Numbers:Environmental Initiatives (818) 954-3470

With Syriana, Warner Bros. became the first studio to offset a production’scarbon footprint with investments in renewable energy. By investing in thegeneration of 3.3 million kilowatt hours of clean energy, the Studio offset 100% of the production’s emissions estimated at 2,040 tons of CO2, the equivalent of taking 595 carsoff the road or planting 510,000 trees.

There are also educational and marketing benefits to carbon neutral productions. These projects teach us (and our audience) about the relationship between energy use, air pollution and climate impact, enable usto promote clean energy and provide positive PR opportunities.

The Warner Bros. solar electrical system is an industry first. It now offers an opportunity to offset carbonemissions through clean energy produced right on the Studio lot.
