Air Purifiers

For areas where particulates and other nuisance dusts cause discomfort to more sensitive individuals, the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department recommends the use of HEPA filtered air purifiers. The HEPA filters should be at least 99.97% efficient for a particle size of 0.3 microns. The use of additional filters along with the HEPA filter (e.g. carbon filters for odors) is ok. The use of ozone generating air purifiers is not recommended. Ozone can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) recommends that air purifiers should provide sufficient filtering rates to turn over the air in a room 10 times per hour. Unfortunately, manufacturers base their room sizes on 6 room air changes per hour rather than 10. If this is the case, the manufacturer’s recommended room area should be multiplied by 0.6 to determine the room area for 10 room air changes per hour. The following table lists the Manufacturer’s recommended room sizes and areas along with the room sizes and areas recommended by Environmental Health & Safety Manufacturer’s Recommended Room Size (Based on 6 room air changes per hour)

recommended by EH&S. If this is the case, the manufacturer’s recommended room area should be multiplied by 0.6 to determine the room area for 10 room air changes per hour.

• Air purifiers randomly filter the air in the room. They do not evenly filter the air or evenly remove contaminates.

• It is recommended that air purifiers be placed near the air diffusers in the room in order to filter the air coming out of the A/C System

• It is recommended that these units be used in closed offices with the door open as little as reasonable. • The use of these air purifiers in open areas will decrease their effectiveness.
