MeaningMeaning

y Environmental degradation is thedeterioration in environmentalquality from ambient

concentrations of pollutants andother activities and processes suchas improper land use and naturaldisasters.

y Erosion of the quality of naturalenvironment caused, directly or indirectly, by human activities.

- Ymber Delecto

y We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. when we see land as a community to which we belong we may begin to use it with love and  respect.

y The Underlying Causes of

Environmental Degradation

y Environmental degradation is a result of the dynamic inter play of socio-economic,

institutional and technological activities.

y Environmental changes may be driven by many

factors including economic growth, populationgrowth, urbanization, intensification of

agriculture, rising energy use and transportation.

y Poverty still remains a problem at the root of

several environmental problems.

Social factor

y P opulation

y India supports 17 per cent of the world population on just 2.4 per cent of world land area.

It·s current rate of population growth at 1.85 per cent continues to pose a persistent

population challenge. In view of the linkages between population and environment, a

vigorous drive for population control need hardly be over emphasized .

y Povertyy P overty is said to be both cause and effect of environmental degradation. The circular link

between poverty and environment is an extremely complex phenomenon. Inequality may

foster unsustainability because the poor, who rely on natural resources more than the rich,

deplete natural resources faster as they have no real prospects of gaining access to other

types of resources.

y Urbanizationy During the past two decades of 1971-91, India·s urban population has doubled from 109

million to 218 million and has reached 300 million by 2000 AD

y Lack of awareness and infrastructure

makes implementation of most of the

laws relating to environment, extremely

difficult and ineffective.

INSTITUTIONAL FACTOR

y Global warming is defined as the

increase of the average temperature

on earth. As the earth is getting hotter,

disaster like hurricanes, draughts andfloods are getting mare frequent.

Acid rain

y The term acid rain refers to what scientists call acid deposition. It is caused by airborne acidicpollutants and has highly destructive results.

y The levels of  acid rain vary from region to region. InThird World nations without pollution restrictions, acid rain tends to be very high. In India, Eastern Europe,China, and the Soviet Union, acid rain levels have also risen

greatly. However, because acid rain can move about so easily, the problem is def initely a global one.

PREVENTION PREVENTION

Today's society becomes ever more rapidly vulnerable tonatural disasters due to the concentration

of populations in mega-cities.Additionally, changes in the global

environment

threaten us with the possibility of severe typhoons, rising sealevels, droughts, among others.

Considering these rapid changes of ambient conditions, vulnerability has increased due to

growing urban populations, environmental degradation, and a

lack of planning, land management

and preparedness. Environmental disasters in many cases are

effected by human

usage of natural resources. They take place especially because of the negative impact of the

over-exploitation of natural resources.Spatial planning and land

management provide various

tools to prevent natural hazards. The prevention of catastrophes

in general is a consideration

of spatial planning and land management on the regional andlocal level
